    The 7-14mm F4 sits at a sweetspot between size, price and performance. While not widely recognised as a professional lens, its popularity have grown in enthusiasts communities lately. Its aftermarket price is comparable to wide angle primes with faster aperture, but significantly cheaper than the critically acclaimed 8-18mm F2.8-4 or Olympus 7-14mm F2.8, making it somehow appealing to rookie and learners who wish to explore ultrawide photography. Unlike 9-18mm cousin from Olympus, which is notoriously known for unreliable, soft corner and prone to dust and moisture, the 7-14mm F4 shows strong resistance to dust and moisture and its sharpness is exceptional.

    I appreciate finding your video and you creating it 5 years ago. I have the Leica 8-18mm and I was considering this lens for constant aperture for video to maintain exposure while zooming; but the disadvantages you mentioned, like filter and sealing makes me want to stick for with my 8-18 mm.

    Interesting to revisit this lens, I got mine back when I was using the G1 - it's nice to see it still delivers with the latest high resolution sensors. I don't do much ultrawide stuff, but it certainly comes in handy when that's what's called for - I recently was asked to do some promotional shots of an LED lighting system installed in a church, and it did a fine job.

    Thanks for the video. It seems this is a better lens than I would have expected for its age and focal length. Do you still have and use this lens in 2021, and is it still a good buy? I'm seriously considering one.

      You're welcome! I abandoned M43 system last year, so I no longer use any M43 gear.
      This lens would work very well though.

    Hello my friend, could you try the Sigma 16mm 1.4 for MTF in the g9? I would like to see how the auto focus for photo and video works. Another interesting lens would be the sigma 30mm 1.4

    • @A1Bokeh
      @A1Bokeh 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used both lenses. Eh. They were ok. The 30 looks basically identical in terms of image quality to the 25mm 1.7

    HI, thanks for the review. I have a question about the lenses I probably should have for my Panasonic G7 and GH5 in future. Now I have only one lumix 12-35 mm, but I want to sell it and to buy 7-14 mm for vlogs and 14-140 mm for filming different objects. Could you tell me whether it's good decision or not or could you recommend me better stuff but I don't want to have more than 2 lenses. Thanks in advance!

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is difficult to tell, it depends on your preference, 12-35 is a great lens, especially for low light, but if you need zoom range 14-140 is a good option.

    I do have this lens and love it. I was using it for a couple of years on an E-M1.1 and it worked flawlessly, apart from the purple blobs appearing here and there in high contrast situations. But recently, I bought the Panasonic G80, and the camera is having a hard time focusing the lens from time to time. Sometimes, it confirms focus but the picture is out of focus. I tested the lens on my GX80 and I'm having the same problem. Have you noticed anything similar?
    Thanks!

    • @TheHybridShooter

      I don't remember having such issues on G80, especially with still the AF was flawless.

    Would 12-60mm work for real estate?

  • @tobiasmoeckel
    @tobiasmoeckel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Spot on!
    There are two more reasons to choose the 8-18mm over the 7-14mm in addition to the three reasons you mentioned at the end of your video:
    1) The 8-18 has an f/2.8 aperture on the wide end, which makes it better for low light/astro/video.
    2) The f/4 on the long end (where it doesn't really matter) allows for the lens to be much smaller and lighter than the 7-14mm f/2.8 from Olympus (315g vs. 534g), which doesn't take filters either.
    Do you not use your 7-14mm for video at all or how do you go about the lack of a filter thread? Maybe you can sell your 7-14mm and get the 8-18mm as soon as you can get it for a decent price?
    I got mine just 2 weeks ago for 850€ and I love it!

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you, those are also relevant points, I use it for both stills and video, but I would still like to use polarizer for stills, it is possible that I will switch to 8-18.

    • @tobiasmoeckel
      @tobiasmoeckel 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Polarizers are tough with the ultra wide angle. I am still hesitating to buy one. I used one with the 9-18mm Olympus, and many shots would have been destroyed because of an only partial polarizing effect. For anything 12mm upwards I can switch to the standard zoom. What do you think?

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depends on what polarizer you use, I use this PolarPro PL amzn.to/2NCfB6T and have no problems with that

    • @tobiasmoeckel
      @tobiasmoeckel 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting! I thought the issue with using polarizers on a wide angle is not so much filter related but simply physics? Maybe I'm wrong, but since the effect depends on the angle, it often can't cover the entire field of view when shooting at such extreme focal lengths. The filter looks good, but after the lens this is too pricey for me! :D

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That depends on the specific situation, you might not want to use maximal effect of the polarizer at ultra wide angles and buying good slim polarizer also helps. That PolarPro CPL unfortunately is expensive.

    The lack of a filter facility can be overcome by using a third party adapter such as PVGear which has a 87mm metal filter ring.

    • @TheHybridShooter

    Hello and thanks for your nice videos 😀 May I ask if your zoom-ring at the 7-14 need much more ”force” to turn then on the Leica 12-35/12-60? I just got my 7-14 but was suprise how much more ”force” it need compare to my Leica 12-35. Its not feel bad but I have no experience to other lenses, but between these there is a big difference.

    • @TheHybridShooter

      FacesOut I returned it for an a6500, but I still have all of my lenses for a G85 I own. I needed better low light performance and auto focus for vlogging + snapping photos of my kids. The a6500 does that for me, but I sure miss a lot of what the g9 offered.

      Yes I get you Matt.. It's all swings and roundabouts etc..! I've switched to other makes, Nikon and Sony but always find I miss My Panasonics, the Photo quality on the G80/G85 Is just as good as my Nikon D5600 and I do a lot of photoshoots for people.. and apparently the G9 Auto Focus Is now reliable for Vlogging after the Update.. The G80/G85 Is actually good as well, but am going to get the G9 this week, Maybe one day you will come back to the G9.. who Knows..! Thanks, J

      Yeah sooner or later, both Panasonic and Olympus need to give the improved AF from their flagship cameras to their lower-end models. I'm hoping that happens sooner, rather than later. Maybe Canikon's upcoming mirrorless release will give Panasonic/Olympus extra motivation to do so :p

      I noticed the lens IS alone on the 12-100 is better than the 12-60 on my GH5, video and still alike. You can also check out Michael the Maven's side-by-side comparison. For me the linear manual focus ring is the killer feature on Oly lenses.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't believe that lens IS can be as good as dual IS. Maybe at long focal lengths where IBIS is less effective. F4 on MFT lens alone is a deal breaker for me, I might actually switch to 12-35 F2.8.
