    It's so refreshing to see someone so dedicated and helpful come to the TH-cam scene. One thing I often notice with other people who do camera tutorials is more kften than not they don't give many details about how they use the settings, their preferences and what scenarios each would be used in, just what each one does, so to have you explain a lot of the ways you work with it in detail helps get another mindset and adds things to consider when shooting myself. Great video thanks for the help.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, using a small (F8-F16) aperture and a high quality lens, that is certainly within the capabilities of the A6300. And you are right to use manual focus in that situation.

    Thank you very much for the video. It was very informative. In the video you mentioned a ND filter so I was wondering if you could recommend one? Thank you in advance.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Such a pleasure to read your kind words, always nice to know my videos are appreciated. The ND filter is based on the filter diameter of the lens you're using and how many stops of ND you need. The brand I prefer is B+W, typically three stops is sufficient to bring the shutter back to 1/60, but you'll need more if you want to open the aperture wider. I don't like variable ND filters, but others do. Hope this helps.

    Great videos! I look forward to watching more! For now, I'm surprised you don't go into more detail about picture profile (exposure curve) drawbacks. You mention that a problem is the bit depth, but not what that means exactly. You imply, like so many do, that "color grading" fixes s-log type profiles. It doesn't really fix anything as much as add color, crudely, to a low contrast image. Because skin tones generally need a lot of color depth, they usually fall apart in s-log. It only works in a sunny scene, as you point out, because the blown out highlights are worse to look at than grayish skin. I say all this because I wasted a ton of time with the GH4 by trying to get the dynamic range only possible with RAW (14 bits per channel).
    Since then, I try to point out to anyone listening that 8bit only captures 256 shades of red, green and blue, which matches our visual acuity, but if your exposure is even 10% off than you lose colors that can be guessed back into the picture. When you're shooting any type of s-log, you're exponentially raising the risk of losing color information in parts of the image you may care about later. Anyway, one the reasons Sony, and many others, don't give specific directions about when to use different picture profiles is that they really shouldn't be used unless you COMPLETELY understand what they doing (as I did not). Because they can be so destructive, you'd really want to test anything before using it. In short, profiles are mostly a gimmick. If you have a problem you really need modifiers or lights.
    I'm not a professional, but in my experience there is only RAW OR 8bit. There is nothing in-between. Log profiles do not a silk purse of a cow's ear make ;)

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words - I could not agree more - There are some (a few situations) where Slog (as implemented in cameras with 8 bit and low bit-rate recordings) might be useful, like the example in the video - but really the answer is just to find a better location or use the appropriate lighting gear.
      I've just met too many people who think it makes them pro to shoot with Slog, when all they're doing is, as you rightly point out, losing information that they're then trying to restore in colour grading. Thinking you could do serious colour work without RAW video recording is not realistic. Hopefully in 2017 someone will release a consumer camera with better bitrates and 10, 12 or even 14 bit colour.
      I've tried to explain this in several videos ... th-cam.com/video/g5ByPkuhuM4/w-d-xo.html
      Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and experiences.

    • @MaxoticsTV
      @MaxoticsTV 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm glad you didn't take what I said the wrong way (as a criticism)! BTW, I was floored by your XC10 review! I bought the Sony X70 hoping that 10 bit video would make a difference. What I learned (I think) is that there's a difference between 10-bits in full-color (really 30 bit RGB vs 24) and 10 bits per single channel (pre-debayer RAW). In 10-bit video the image is only marginally better and grading is not that much different. I don't think I could have reliably pointed out the difference in a blind-test. That is, if I took some slightly underexposed footage I couldn't grade/fix it significantly better than the 8bit. In RAW, that is not the case.
      What we're having is a bit of Betamax redux. Consumers would rather have 2 hour recordings of 4K (look at how much they berate Sony for 30 minute record times in small cameras) rather than 5 minutes of RAW. Magic Lantern proves that most consumer cameras can do RAW for a few minutes. Fielding a million calls about why RAW isn't working in Mom's T3i (because the user doesn't understand SD cards) is probably more than the manufacturers want to handle ;)
      Again, I look forward to watching your channel!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Again, thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences. The X70's bit rate (50Mbps) is low - which must mean lots of compression and lost data. I've not used it, so happy to read your thoughts. The number of cameras sold with 30 minute limits and the few complaints must mean that for most consumers it's not really an issue. The rest of us are happy enough with the other features (and the price point) that we're prepared to find workarounds.
      I don't think a novice shoots photos in RAW, so likely won't be recording movies in RAW either. However, recording RAW will require even more powerful processors and better cards - neither are really workable in small bodies.
      As always, thanks for watching and participating.

    nice video !!! . For low light situations what are the best settings (basic) for video shooting ? More over do you think s-log will "capture" a better dynamic range or more noise ? thank you

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words. Low light situations rarely have an extended dynamic range, which means that you're compressing an already small range into an even more compressed data set. By the time you're applied a LUT, it will be noisy. SLog is useful when there is an extended dynamic range, - in bright sunlight for example.

    Very Intuitive reviews and extremely useful.I hope you don't mind me asking you a question? you seem to spend a lot of time reviewing and talking about Sony cameras and have some impressive lenses,yet I noted that in your review about packing for your river cruise you take the Olympus and the Panasonic GH5 in preference to the smaller more compact Sony camera .I'm sure you have your reasons but was just curious..

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm taking those two cameras to review - if I wasn't doing a review, if money was no object, and if I could start with a fully clean slate, my choice would be the Sony A7RII, with the 35mmF1.8 prime, G-Master 28-135 for video and the 70-200F2.8. I tried to get the A9 in time for the trip, but they don't yet have a loaner in Canada.

    I suspect most, if not all of this information will transfer over to the A6500 too. Agreed?
    Also, I wish there was a way to transfer settings from one camera to another. It would speed up the process if shooting multicam projects.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suspect that also, but until I get my hands on an A6300, I won't be able to confirm. And YES, so YES! It's a standard pro feature to align cameras or to get specific settings for segments, shows, etc. set quickly and dependably. Would be easy, should be easy, and a real nice feature to have.

  • @saikiranbhimaneni6592

    Hi Maarten,
    Very informative video thanks for this. I have a question and I am shooting a commercial with a6300 in few days. It is a combination of both day and night shoot.
    Myself, am a Canon guy and I always shoot with picture style set to get a flat image, so that I can get a good image at post. I have never used a sony before, So shooting at s-log can give me a flat image for maximum grading in post?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sadly, no. It will give you an image with reduced contrast and a non-standard (but larger) colour space and it forces you to ISO 800. I would never use SLog in a scene that only has reflected light.
      Unless you need the extended range (i.e. your subject is in the dark, the background is in sunlight) don't use SLog. Sony's "flat" (i.e. colour neutral) is Creative Style "Neutral". My flat settings are described in the video (Sat -2, detail -4). You might combine the two. With those settings, (and a custom white balance) I only need to do exposure adjustments (and sometime saturation up or down a little as a result) in post. Cine2 for daylight, Cine4 lifts the shadows slightly for night. Hope this helps.

    1. I'm on a tight budget and planning to buy a cam for learning videography. I do not understand color science much. I love story telling and that is the reason for me to buy a cam to initiate movie making. Which camera should I buy- Canon M50/ Sony a6400/ Panasonic G85?
    2. Which lenses I would need to buy?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a larger conversation than I can address here. However, in my mind, currently the best video capabilities in a still camera are found in the Fujifilm X-T3. Of the three you've given me to choose from, I would prefer the A6400, (my review should be up shortly) as it has no 30 minute limit, but the data rates are low, and there is no 17x9 4K resolution - and it has a tendency to overheat.
      As for lenses, that depends a great deal on what you intend to shoot, most pros use prime lenses. However, for general hobbyist shooting, a high-quality medium zoom (say 24-70) with a constant aperture of F4 or less would be recommended.
      Hope this helps.

    • @WriterSoumyaMitra
      @WriterSoumyaMitra 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MaartenHeilbron That's really helpful! T3 is definitely a cam I would like to get. Would you please tell me if I intend to be a Movie maker then what is the most important thing I should learn with a camera?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Always happy to help. The most important aspect of video production is lighting. I think sometimes novices blame their camera, or their exposure skills when lighting is really what's missing. The next aspect is balancing exposure and focus to get an appropriate depth of field to direct the viewer's focus in the image. Then, framing and composition. Finally, don't overlook audio - make sure the audience can hear what you want them to hear.
      Of course, never lose sight of the story you're telling - make sure your script (for drama or documentary) is solid before you start shooting, otherwise it will be impossible to tell the story.
