    hmm, did not know about the filter, thanks for sharing your knowledge, I'll have to look for that, as I'm in the process of redoing the fuel system

    Hi John,
    Great teaching videos. Your knowledge of both automotive mechanics and electronics is impressive. I have a 66 Thunderbird Q Code convertible with the 428 up here in Canada.
    Nice to see someone passing on their valuable experience and the patience to do the job right!
    Cheers!

      This is what I used. Works great, size 6 inches on down. Auto parts stores also usually carry them.:

      @@joernone Thanks John! The '66 we have has been one lesson after another, but love it... It is a convertible, Emberglow w/parchment interior, A/C, "Q" code with every option available for that year....... and most of those need attention these last two years! Dropping the tank next... Cheers, Bobby

    Wow, you are getting into the nitty gritty now...... good man.... Dropping tanks is fun :) Glad you found that bad pot.. that explains some of the problem you were seeing. You are running on all cylinders now!!!! You need a TV series with all these projects. Always good stuff to watch my friend - Ron

      Ron,
      I was about to send you an email to make sure you were still breathing...or had been eaten by your bird. As usual, things here are just clicking along. A vid here...a vid there. Hopefully, someone new finds a few of them interesting enough to come back. If not, oh well.
      I'm looking forward to installing that new set of volume control pots and pulling the Bird gas tank, but right now I'm at a standstill. How cool, huh?
      Regards,
      John

      LOL Thanks John. I am around, just very busy. I've been on 2 business trips in 2 weeks and this weekend I had back to back gigs. I am feeling the pain from that but doing good. Back to the grind for me now.. and my Crosley 124... collecting dust since then... coming soon, another video. I have a free bird for Pearline. It can sit on the mirror :) Thanks Ron

      Unless I can find a way to avoid it the bigger expenses are on the way...namely a repro fuel tank, which I really prefer not to buy.

      I never check PMs unless someone let's me know that one has been sent. It's always best to just leave me a comment below any of my vids. That way I'm notified. PMs don't give me a notification.

    John, Had the same pump filter on my 65 mustang 6 cyl. On it, the filter was on the top of the pump to be taken off without getting under the vehicle. I was doing a startup like yours. Decided to replace the pump which came with a new canister and filter. Glad I did it. Since I had already replaced the tank and cleaned the line, it made the job complete. It cranked and started like a champ. You might consider a new pump and filter? Your Thunderbird would thank you. John in West KY

    I am in middle of replacing fuel pump myself. You never showed if you pulled from top or bottom? Were you able to pull from bottom? I really don't want to move power steering pump. Like you said they will start leaking and need replacing.

    • @joernone
      @joernone  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Andy,
      From the bottom, but it wasn't easy getting to the right (rear side )bolt. Getting the bolt back in is another chore. You just have to stick with it until it bends to your will.
      Good luck, my friend.
      Regards,
      John

    Wish you had the official Ford shop manuals for this chassis and engine. Inside it would tell you the proper methods to go about removing parts and re-installing them, etc.

    Hi John. One very important thing is to find out if possible is what type of motor oil was used. If it was Quaker state ,then when you change oil to a better brand " Do Not Run it long " till you change it again. Has QS will create a ton of sludge and stop up the screen on the oil pump. I had it happen back in the 90's cost me an engine . only ran it about two hours. When I pulled it apart it was full of sludge. Before an oil change use a good brand motor flush and drain while still hot. I hope this helps my friend.

    Hi John, You might want to look into having that gas tank coated inside and out. Use google to see if there is a gas tank coating company in your area. The coating even seals up pin holes in the tank. Won’t rust again either. 73s.

    New fuel pump for the 292 352 360 390 come in either style, with or without canister filter. Summit racing has a non filter version for $20. It is a Carter M6984.

    The thunderbird is a great project. I grew up with VW bugs. Now those were easy to fix! We could drop the engine and put a new one in under 20minutes.

  • @Ragitysdad
    @Ragitysdad 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi John. You most likely dented that can. Strap wrenches will dent oil filters also. Not a good tool to use to install the filter can back on with. 73s.

    hi john, glad you got the seeburg nearly done....i cringed when i saw you putting your hand in that sock soaked in alcohol to clean the filter...i am sure you are not as stupid as me, but i did exactly that years ago, working in my garage under the car, i had a halogen worklight with a cracked glass...the fumes or perhaps a splash ignited the the cloth i had wrapped around my hand...up it went in flames ...in my panic to get out from under, i kicked over the can of alcohol which also went up....the car i managed to save and the garage, my hand was not so lucky, spent 2 weeks in the hospital burns unit and months off work....that was my last car restore...moved on to jukes after that!

    I'm sure you could match that fuel pump up with a later model by a trusted old school auto parts guy. Then you could go with a standard inline filter up top. Don't forget to clean that fuel line. Line in my 73 Dodge was clean when I replaced my tank. . . . Rog

    • @joernone
      @joernone  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not to worry, Rog, the fuel line will be blown out with air. And it looks like WaybackTECH might have solved the upgraded fuel pump issue. If so, you'll all be hearing about it in the next T-Bird vid.

    Hi John, your friend in Oregon here.
    There are a couple of fuel pumps available that will work just fine with your FE engine. If you buy a new one like the one you have, it will come with a new filter. I would recommend that instead of changing the filter... the diaphragms get old and fail. You're right, a huge filter like that were good for at least 50K miles... even longer.
    You said you didn't like the big filter hanging down there. There are pumps that will work fine with your FE that don't have the filter, and you can switch to an inline style filter. The issue using one of those on your car is where to mount the filter. With air, and power steering, and the large radiator reservoir take, and the large diameter of the air cleaner... Where do you want to mount it where it won't vapor lock? I think that's why Ford mounted their filters on the pump.
    (BTW I drive a '62 Ford every day)
    I would HIGHLY recommend removing your tank, not just because it definitely needs to be cleaned, (new ones are available, and there are reseal coatings you should look into), but because your car is susceptible to the 50 year old strap welds failing. I would inspect where the straps are welded to the frame towards the front of the car for rusty welds.
    See ya!
