"Take less pictures but better pictures." This principle can be applied on both film and digital. I'm sure this is one of the goals of every photographer. My minor issue is that not everyone has the capacity to waste precious film. And going digital will make it easier for beginners to learn what work for them and what doesn't. So in the end, it doesn't really matter if it's film or digital. What is important is the process and the journey we take to reach our desired result.
i tend to agree, I shoot 1 click at a time on digital and I feel that if you grew up photographing with film you respect photography, but nothing compares to film.
As long as one doesn't use AI to do it all. Beginners still need to explore and learn from mistakes. Image manipulation software should be avoided until one understands the basics of the exposure triangle and how to use it to take creative images in-camera.
As a part of the younger generation who has just stepped into the world of analog photography, I have to say that watching this short documentary has solidified my choice of sticking with analog even more. Now I know a perfect video to refer to my friends and family who continuously ask me “Why don’t you buy a digital camera instead?”.

im 18 now, and i got into film about 2 years ago. I was never really fond of photography but film changed that. there's just something about film that feels so much better than digital, and the passoniate, driven people in the film industry never cease to amaze me. awesome video :)
This is wonderful, I have been a photographer for 40 plus years and I love to shoot film because like he said it sharpens your skills when you don't have unlimited access to your medium. I believe just like he said to wear the title of photographer you should have to shoot film for at least a year, you can't own a pipe wrench and call yourself a plumber and you should have some training and basic film skills to call yourself a photographer. I am sure I will get a lot of hate for this but I just don't care, I spent 3 years post secondary education to become a professional photographer and I worked as an assistant for just about 2 years, I earned the title and so should anyone else. Now before you get bent out of shape I don't think you need to go to school to be a photographer because there are a lot of untrained photographers out there who have produced amazing work, I just think that before you start presenting yourself as a pro you should have some basic skills that include some of the history of the medium, spray and pray is not a skill.
Hi Will......what an absolute pleasure to see and listen to Alex....he is right about every aspect of photography Digital and beloved Analog......I often say to my Grandchildren if you want to see the nearest thing to REAL MAGIC whatch film being developted and then being printed ( Developed ) and see from nothing the image like MAGIC appears before their very eyes.....How do you do that grandad.....I tell them it's MAGIC.....they are only young but it gets them interested.
I've come back to shooting film again this year, I have noticed that it does help me slow down, and really think about my composition when I'm having to pay for every shot. I don't completely agree with the statement that shooting digital isn't real photography. For one thing, it can be used to train you on how to shoot manual without having to waste a lot of money on film and developing. Digital cameras also perform better than film for low light photography. Many wedding photographers will us a film camera for outdoor shots, but use a digital for the indoor ones. Digital photography has also helped improve the workflow of doing commercial work. You can make realtime adjustments in the studio, and not have to wait for film development to see the results.
A interesting short documentary but I have to disagree with some of Alex's opinions. You CAN still be creative using a digital camera and with self discipline, you can set yourself targets to be more creative. For example, I have a small collection of lenses for my Olympus EM5ii some are auto focus and some are fully manual focus which straight away makes you slow down and take your time. I also have several other digital cameras with different sized sensors and differing mega pixels and I love taking out a different camera every now and then because each type of camera has it's own unique look in the final image. Using a different prime lens also makes you think about composition more and finally, going back to film these days is very expensive compared to digital, so digital is actually good for photography because it makes it more available for all

He reminds me of many people of his generation i had the privilege of learning from now nearly 20 years ago. All of them have long retited and sold up their shops. Nice to see he's still at it. Lovely little film.
Thank you - I've been into photography since I was a little kid - like 1955 with my Brownie Hawkeye. Now my favorite lenses include pre WWI TTH Cooke, Zeiss, and 1950's Wollensak process lenses on a large format camera (4x5, half plate and 5x7). Thanks for the talk on film rather than digital.
Dear Will, you are so right in total. Since I was seven, I've been 'a photographer' and still prefer analogue: Voigtländer Vitomatic II, Asahi Pentax Spotmatic, and some Nikons (F2, -mat ET, F801s) plus a Nikon D300 digicam, but all Nikons with the same set of manually focused F-lenses what means operating in the same way. It's not worth discussing technique but it's particularly worth communicating about the ideas leading to convincing images by chance or a ceative concept, by momentum, by humor, by the spirit of exstasy;-)) LG RR

What a wonderful sequence! I went to this shop a couple of times, never knowing all this about the man. I've just learned so much about him in these 5 minutes or so. I have so much respect for him, and long live his shop in London
What a great film, I do like Alex's insight and thinking on today's photographers and tomorrow's photographers. I find myself agreeing with him far more now than I did when working for him thirty years ago.

I’ve bought a fair few things from Mr. CAD over the years, and it’s nice to know that there’s a genuinely interested and passionate person at the other end doing the work.
I'm a student and have been shooting film for a year and developing for 6 months, I can't imagine moving back to digital formats, analog photography has now become my biggest hobby. I never regarded myself as an artist, I never had a good hand for drawing or painting. That changed when I bought my first film camera. Now I can't get enough, I have 4 cameras and develop at least a roll a week. It's an addiction.
I agreed with everything this guy said apart from what he said about digital photography stopping us from being creative. THAT, I STRONGLY disagree with.

Interesting, but he's completely wrong. Digital does NOT mean not creative. It means being creative in a nearly unlimited sense. And lest you think I'm a young upstart, I'm around his age and did all that same film work he talks about.
Maybe but it's ridiculous that digital photographers take an image of something and then add several layers of make believe ending up with an image that looks nothing like what they saw. That's not photography, it's computing. The great Peter Lindbergh said 'There is nothing wrong with shooting digital, but Photoshop shouldn't have happened.'
@@jeremyfielding2333 As a lifelong photographer, I ask how you know what any photographer "saw" when the shutter was actuated. The computer is a tool, and I think it does more for me than the rudimentary tools that kept Ansel Adams trapped inside a darkroom instead of out making more images.

Lol, you know very well that most digital photographers shoot incessantly and edit relentlessly. That's not photography. It's curating and editing. It's great that you find it equally creative to film and the potential is there but let's not pretend that that is what most are doing.

Yes and no. Film teaches precision and discipline because of the limitations. And obviously it's just a vastly different experience and outcome.

Well said ! Problem with digital , is that in too many instances , it makes us lazy , removes the fun and curbs creativeness.
Which lens have you used to shoot this?
my DOP used a 35mm fuji lens but with the apsc sensor on the XT3 it is more like a 50mm (shot in 4k)
In a way that is why I like to nuggeteer. The nuggets provide the limitations and the pains in the bum, while still being cheaper than film.

my DOP used a fuji 35mm but the XT3 that it was shot on has a cropped sensor so it was more like 50mm
