Suddenly the crack of gunshots filled the air, his vision was taken over by a burning light, a searing pain spreading on his face. He felt something hit his blade, pushing it aside... making it miss the disgrace on the ground. He hissed, mostly in annoyance and indignation and opened his eyes to see who dared to interrupt his moment of glory. He saw a group of these accursed marines in black. Those daemons serving his father. But why... why did they seem so familiar. For a second the image before him wavered. The armor blackened by armor gave way for an armor of purple and gold... armor he has not seen for over 10 millenia. In my heart, the fiery souls of dead Astartes led by the headless Ferrus Manus (that's summoned by Big E Himself during the war on the Webway) will forever be the in-universe original Legion of the Damned. The Firehawks are just the newest addition to the group. And maybe a few other named Space Marines and Dreadnoughts who lived and died like gigachads can also be a part of the Legion. Edit: I stand corrected with that Rylanor jumpscare 😆
In my head I don't think he limits it to just astartes but to anybody that choas cheats and kills unfairly. Guardsmen PDF Sisters of Battle pretty much anybody who hates choas from beyond the grave enough to tell Big E "Sure turn me into a fiery daemon and I'll even the score."
You are not alone. It just makes too much sense to not be the case; it's the Ur-Betrayal for all Astartes in particular and the Imperium in general, it has got to have an immeasurably greater impact than a single chapter's mysterious disappearance while in Warp transit in the 41st millennium.

Out of the air open blazing warp portals, marching from them a true legion of 10,000 flame wreathed black armored marines march force unleashing bolter fire that cuts down the chaos servants by the thousand. Fulgrum a demon-primarch is quick enough to avoid this hail, swiftly diving on the damned souls before they can fully break his forces. They Dance as the demon-primarch trying to figure what this reminds him of, and then it becomes clear, he screams out "Rylnor, even from the grave you defy me". His eyes flaring with pysker power and he slams the restored relic of war into a building shattering both legs. Then he starts to gather power to destroy this nightmare once and for all before being slammed aside by a massive warhammer. Fulgrum recovers landing a distance away only to see a massive "tech marine" holding a familiar warhammer, the marine lacking a helm unlike the others, but in place of a head there is a skull made of warp flames in it's place, massive marine's arms also stand out rather than than the common black armor and flame they are silver and the warp seems stilled around them. A new battle is joined, unlike any Fulgrum has faced for 10k years, normally is primarch abilities set him above everyone, but this foe while slowed strikes with force that shatters even his demonic body, his fast rengeration pushed beyond limit unable to keep up with the burning wounds left by that hammer. His own attacks not even phasing the juggernaut battling him his warp powers fading when blocked by the warrior's silver arms. Following another bone shaking exchange Fulgrum scans the battle field as he tries to recover and he notices that the, sarcophagus of the dreadnought is open, and where? As a powersword plunges out of his chest, the black armored marine holding it holds in his other hand a burning war-banner, a moment later Fulgrum turns to see a flaming warhammer heading for his own skull, then only darkness. The demon army starts to fade with their prince struck down only to find that they can not escape realspace and they are systematically cut down by the blazing legion. As the last demon falls, the mystery legion fades into the same portals that brought them to the once doomed world. At the site of the battle with Fulgrum burned into the ground, the words "Even in Death We Still Serve"

Hearing that, I'm just imagining the legion of the damned manifesting in Trazyn's vault with no objective other than liberating Clonegrim, to bring before Robust Gutsman
Before they leave, one of the soldiers acknowledges Trazyn, informing him that the Emperor sees his work before slipping into a wormhole back to the warp. Maybe with some kind of memento "accidentally" left behind that can be added to the collection.

In the battle between Clonegrim and The Fuckician, Clonegrim is about to die at the hands of his evil self, before a booming voice from the WARP itself manifests.
"Father, I come to your aid, the Daemon Prick shall fall"
And out comes Rylanor, marked by the Legion of the Damned, stepping besides Clonegrim, now, revered as the true, real Fulgrim, even so that The Ancient of Rites finally sees his genefather's face.

Fulgrim, was filled with manic glee, this copy of him was prone on the floor, about to be struck down by his blade. He swung down, already envisioning how the pretender's blood would splash on the ground, decorating it like a fine tapestry.
But as heavy stomps drew closer the image dissipated, showing the legion of the damned once more now joined by a dreadnought. Its voice booming from its speaker. "We are here to assist our father. To assist in striking you down. For we reject you, for now and for always!"
Fulgrim recoiled, his eyes widening as a searing pain spread from an old wound of his soul.
@@krel7160 and then ferrus join for the rematch
Who says it couldn't be both with that edit? After all, why SHOULDN'T headless Ferrus Manus recruit the soul of Rylanor found drifting in the warp?
To me the Legion is for anyone hates chaos and has more hate in their being for it to transcend normal mortal limits. After all big e hates only those who wish harm on humanity yes?

Imagine snake boy Fulgrum is back and causing havok, the guard is holding but they are but men in the face of a fallen demi-god.
Then the sound of the 'Bell of Lost Souls' rings on this battlefield lightyears from the distant throne world.
Fulgrum then feels premonition "The Ancient Returns", a pristine Contempor Dreadnought accented in flames where gold once trimmed purple leaps toward him a blazing chainfist coming down hard on the snake-man, showering him with flaming autocannon shells.
Yes! Just, Yes!!

Even if the retcon is true and the Legion of the Damned are just demons of the Emps, I don't think Rylanor can come back as a dreadnought. People forget that Fulgrim has cut his body out from the casing. It would make more sense for his soul to come back with a full body in Great Crusade era MK3 Iron armor.
On the other hand, psychic phenomena work in accordance with symbolism. Rylanor spent countless years inside his Dreadnought armor. I don't know the exact time of service required to be called the Ancient of Rites, but he already held that title during the finale of Great Crusade. What I want to say is that he probably associates himself with moving metal tomb more than with the body that he once had. If he returned, he'd probably return as a fire-wreathed machine
