  • Hunting down the parts you need for your Mopar restoration can be a bit of a nightmare especially when it comes to less-than-super-popular cars and platforms. In searching for parts we need for our 1970 Plymouth Fury III convertible "Marsha" we sought out Billy West Peedin's Garage in Selma, NC and walked hundreds of classic Mopars in search of what we needed - and discovered much more than we bargained for!

      There was one sitting behind the Chevy/Olds dealer where I worked in the early 1980's for months. I think it belonged to one of the family that owned the place. Anyhow, one thing that I remember about the car is that it had a sunroof that looked like a factory installation to me.
      (DISCLAIMER: I like Mopar products OK, they're a ton better to me than anything wearing the "Blue Oval", but I'm primarily a Chevy guy. BTW I really like these junkyard stroll videos posted by experts. Good job, guys, keeping it entertaining for this car nut who's not too well versed in Mopars.)

    Thank you for the video. I was just thinking about this place and here comes TH-cam recommending the video lol
    Use to come here with my dad years ago before Mr. West passed away. A few stories I'll share. My dad bought a 1967 coronet r/t for $2000 from Mr. West before I was born. It used to be raced all over the country in NHRA competitions. The car was named "Spice of Life" and had a #1 qualifier sticker from a track in Pennsylvania. We still have the car hoping to have it back on the road in the fall.
    My dad also tried to buy a 1965 coronet 383 4 speed from Mr. West but another guy had just put a downpayment on it 2 hrs before. The guy lived in the same town as my dad. Shortly after an elderly lady t-boned that car and totaled it unfortunately.
    Also my uncle bought I believe it was a 71 dart swinger that was orange. My little sister called it "the pumpkin car". 😂
    Lastly I remember being in the shop and noticed a calendar hanging with topless women. Not sure if they're still hanging up or not lol
    Kinda awkward seeing that with my dad standing right next to me hahaha. Good memories. Mopar or no car!

    Enjoyed the video! I made a couple of trips out Billy’s place in the late ‘80s looking for parts to my ‘68 Superbee.
    I flat towed a ‘69 Sport Satellite minus a powertrain from Raleigh to his place and traded it for a driver’s side door and a bulge hood for my car. Good trade for Billy ‘cause I didn’t realize at the time that I could have used the door from the Satellite 😂.
    Anyway Billy was a great guy and invited me and my buddy in for a tour of the shop and some good tales of his racing days. The amount of parts in that building alone was astonishing and from your video it looks like it hasn’t diminished much. He showed us the Road Runner (which was mostly white at the time w/graphics) and I recall him talking about the doors having been acid dipped and the side glasses were plexiglass and operated with old seat belt webbing.
    I’m glad to see the family is still keeping it going. Lots of good parts to be had for those in need of them.

    I got thinking how much you like those little fish 🐠 the barracudas. Okay I always like a little better than most folks around. If you got to the Midwest and you can find one that's in good shape. They are cheap. He's already sold the one I'm thinking of you may have another one. First of all you get out in South Kansas on out to Western Kansas they don't rust like they do in the rest of the Midwest. Is a couple sizable military bases around so you going to find some Mopar laying around. Through Oklahoma down to Abilene surface rust as you get into the heat but rust through no not really. Until you get past place called Pittsburg Kansas I still like extension of Missouri rust. This part is where I'm not advertising on your channel. I'm just throwing some things out to you. Complete front clip assembly for a rebel SST? You can find that on my channel about 4 to 6 weeks ago on the shorts. You like it I'll tell you where to find it get you together with the man who owns it. It is cheap enough to. Fell out of Chicago I call him the Mopar King 👑. If there's one for example 1015 superbirds and half-a-dozen Ford Talladega goes and they're in the barn big barn and they're in good shape. Okay I'll leave you with this Silas. Adventures made from scratch. He had a couple of barracudas and one he finally got sold and I'm not sure you got $1,000 out of it and it was a complete car with original paint. It was either 6 cylinder or the engine was missing. That one's gone but he's begging people to take that car. He did not want to go and become toasters. Fort Leonard Wood Missouri is a big army post where you going to find old cars laying around off Post of course. And I got to drive about 6 hours just to get down around the Southeastern corner of Kansas and then start heading across but it's worth the drive. Anyway I like it so much I'm going back and watching a second time this episode of yours. Now cuda are hard to find. But I know there's a couple challenges out on the eastern part of the Midwest. And they're fairly complete and they're in a secluded part of the salvage yards

    The New Yorker is above the 300. The New Yorker came standard with the 440. I believe the Newport and 300 came with the 383, then the 400 standard, with the 440 being optional for both. The 70 300 Hurst model came with the 440 TNT motor.

    • @moparconnection
      @moparconnection  ปีที่แล้ว

      Funny I always thought that the 300 was the highest equipped Chrysler before you got the Imperial

    • @rickloera9468
      @rickloera9468 ปีที่แล้ว

      @moparconnection How it worked was the Newport was the entry level. After that came the 300 Sport, or just 300. The New Yorker came after the 300. The next step up is the 300 letter series. For example, the 300 J was above the New Yorker. The reason is it was the Bankers' hot rod with the largest motor geared towards high performance. Then came Imperial at a little over $5000.00 for the basic Imperial. The LeBarons were around $6000.00 base price. The New Yorker Salon was offered in 1963/64 and was more expensive than a base Imperial. By 1964, the 300 J had been decontented to the point where it was priced in the New Yorkers price range. If you look at a 1961/62 letter 300, they were over $5000.00. By 1965, they were in the low $4000.00 range. Leather to vinyl interior. The four bucket seats became two. All the stuff that really separated the letter series from the other Chrysler cars was less and less. When the 300 Sport series came out in 1962, it watered down the name to the point where the car wasn't as special as before. Ford did the same thing with the Thunderbird. Went from a sporty two seater to a family car and lessened its significance.

      Man, I really wish you’d wait less than 18 hours for our next video. The Petty’s themselves dug it up when they expanded their facility. Richard didn’t want it restored and back on the road so Billy dragged it to his barn with the promise not to sell it, and to never restore it for those very same reasons, Robert. Billy died guarding it and Jamey is doing the same.

    i swear i will never understand these outrageous prices for any old car pre 84 as a old school car guy born in 65 who has owned every thing from k5 4x4 to muscle cars growing up a car guy could buy one ( good running ) for around 2000k to 4500k now the same cars nearly 40 years later cost 40k to 300k even a piece of crap 1984 4 door ford ltd no one wanted back in the day will cost 8500 a rusted out chassis will cost 8k why ? and a bank with good interest rates will not even think about a loan for one so the average gear head is out of luck why ? so mister money bags think they look cool SITTING IN THEIR COLLECTION and then there is people with classics just sitting outside or in a old building not touched in 30 years it makes me sick

    • @moparconnection
      @moparconnection  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally, I blame online auctions and big ticket sellers like Mecum and Barrett-Jackson that hyperinflated the prices of these cars. Everyone thinks they have a rare “numbers matching” car.

  • @bultacowally
    @bultacowally ปีที่แล้ว

    It's too bad the restoration hobby has for the most part gotten out of reach as far as financing one goes. Most of the people that have all those old cars want so much for them regardless if they can be restored or only used for parts that the average Joe can't even afford to take the first step in trying to buy a car to restore. Most of these old Mopars here and thousands of other cars sitting in junk lots all over the US will more than likely rust away back into the earth rather than the owners selling them for blue collar money and getting them back on the roads. All about money now more than anything else. Thanks to the rich collectors doing unrealistic mega dollar restorations on so many old cars then selling them at all the mega dollar auctions for stupid amounts of money to other rich collectors us lower middle class can't even dream about old cars anymore. I remember an AAR cuda hulk that was just the frame, firewall, roof and rear quarters(still had the AAR strobe stripe showing...) that had already been crushed so the roof was flat against the quarters selling on EBay a few years ago...SOLD for 8 grand...probably just for the VIN tag and radiator core stamping so some one could make a "real" AAR from a clone. That is what the hobby has gotten to. I've lost all my interest.

    • @moparconnection
      @moparconnection  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You touch on a pet topic of mine that is VERY unpopular: if fellow "car guys" want to see this hobby go on in the right direction with a new crop of young car enthusiasts, they need to "take a hit" and sell some of the cars and parts they've been hoarding up (because we all know Mopar guys are hoarders) at a loss.
      Too often I see videos of "barn finds" with dozens of solid car (if not more) left in barns, sheds and fields; when asked what the 75-year-old man plans to do with them or if he'd be willing to part with any one of them, he emphatically yells, "Nothing's for sale!"
      Well, congratulations you old fart. Those cars are gonna end up in the scrapper when you die, or auctioned off to big dollar flippers. They'll NEVER end up on the road with a young guy behind the wheel who truly loves that car far, far more than you likely ever did.
