I believe this is an ode to women--Sting is saying that men have built a fortress around women, using war as a male metaphor, and "a price you seem prepared to pay" given the fact that women haven't rebelled a lot from the "prison" created for them by the male world. Just my 2 cents!

I'm not sure what other Sting (post-Police) tunes you've listened to besides this one, but hearing you say he is in a class all his own (musically) is exactly what I commented recently on another reaction channel (to a different Sting song Shape of My Heart). I wrote: "Sting wrote, produced and performed (with assorted brilliant musicians) some of the most gorgeous music in the last 40 yrs. He is in a class/genre all his own. If you like this tune check out some of his earlier albums: 1985 Dream of the Blue Turtles, 1991 The Soul Cages (my personal favorite), 1993 Ten Summoner's Tales. Definitely check out on youtube his live concerts in the later 80s til present. He is still performing (in his early 70s) and is just as amazing as he was in his early career." Dream of the Blue Turtles was his first solo album which contained this song and a great mix of others like Consider me Gone, Moon over Bourbon Street, Shadows in the Rain, Love is the 7th wave and Russians. The second album, Nothing like the Sun brought us They Dance Alone, Fragile, and Englishman in New York.

Surrounded by plenty of jazz greats. Omar Hakim certainly lets you know who's tempo it is.
