  • The Warriors is a 1979 American action film directed by Walter Hill. It is based on Sol Yurick's 1965 novel of the same name, which was, in turn, based on Xenophon's Anabasis. The story centers on a New York City gang who must make an urban journey of 30 miles (48 km), from the north end of The Bronx to their home turf in Coney Island in southern Brooklyn, after they are framed for the murder of a respected gang leader. It was released in the United States on February 9, 1979.
After reports of vandalism and violence, Paramount temporarily halted their advertising campaign and released theater owners from their obligation to show the film. Despite its initially negative reception, The Warriors has since become a cult film, and it has spawned multiple spinoffs, including video games and a comic book series.

These are gangs we're talking about here. Since when do gangs apologize to other gangs for killing a member of theirs? If anything they dwell in that. Even though the leader did not apologize for his crew wrongly killing Cleon he did acknowledge their credibility and they weren't wearing their gang colors. So there was a level of respect and acknowledgment. Plus the truce was off after that. It is what it is. You can take it or leave it. Let's not get caught up in fantasy thinking. Ever heard of the saying no emotion that's what business is? An apology is not gonna bring Cleon back and further more the Warriors didn't know what happened to Cleon. So maybe it is best that they didn't tell them that. Some things are better left unsaid. That's the truth.

There were no mobile phones and who knows if those guys would've even had coin for a payphone. Plus they're kids/late night folk...they'd most likely all be asleep. So someone would've had to go on foot to get help. Plus its about honour and reputation. When the Rogues started stalking them they weren't going to just run off and not face the threat head-on. There's a lot of levels to this ;-)

I’m 43 and I have little but clear memories of the early 80’s.
Being “tough” was a serious thing in an inner city neighborhood at the time which is why a lot of movies from 79-84 were based on “tough kids”.
I remember my older brothers’ friends wore the denim jackets, Chuck Taylor all star shoes and I would eaves drop on him and his friends talk about who is the toughest. They had a list of neighborhood kids in order.
They way nerds would talk about which superhero could beat this superhero common talk was which guy can beat up which other guy.
They weren’t necessarily in a street gang just groups of kids who were street tough.
    It was everything to them.
    Then… break dancing got popular.
    Then skateboarding took over.

Did you notice the police badge on Luthor? It's a clue.
Luthor gets on a pay phone earlier in the movie to report the night's events to 'someone' in authority. That someone is probably a police official.
Luthor is likely a police informant who ratted out the RIFF's big conclave.
Dirty cops probably paid Luthor and the Rogues under the table to shoot Cyrus while he was vulnerable on the podium so he could never unite the gangs.
Luthor had everything to gain for himself and his gang including immunity from prosecution if caught.
The city had a vested interest in shutting down Cyrus before he could organize an army of gang members that would outnumber the police.
Luthor and the Rogues are a de facto death squad in service to the city. Cyrus's execution was to serve as a warning to any other would-be crime kingpins.
But the Warriors were able to avoid both the police and getting wasted by other gangs and make it back to Coney Island...which left Cyrus's murder unresolved.
The Rogues had to waste the Warriors in order to silence any questions about the death of Cyrus.
Notice also that Luthor's gun is probably a throwaway .38 police special given to him by the authorities.
In the end, a gang member comes forward and fingers the Rogues and Luthor as Cyrus's real killers anyway.
The Riffs then capture Luthor and the Rogues and beat the truth out of them...which sets up 'WARRIORS II - WAR OF THE RIFFS'.
Luthor is kept alive after he fingers the cops that ordered the hit on Cyrus. He identifies the dirty city officials and cops that sent him after Cyrus.
The other Rogue members are then killed by the Riffs and left at the doorsteps of the guilty officials as a declaration of war against the city.
The Riffs decide to start putting cops in the hospital instead of killing them and turning public sentiment against them.
Eventually the police department has had enough and decide to negotiate. Ajax is released back to the Warriors gang with a message for them to deliver to the Riffs...
    "Call off the war...or else..."

For the Warriors, just having the Riffs acknowledge how good they were was enough for them. Kind of like a way to apologize without actually saying the words.

I always wondered who was the gang member who showed up at the Riffs headquarters with information that cleared the Warriors?
