  • Here's a great reissue that may go unnoticed, but it contains reference versions of The Firebird, Petrushka, and The Miraculous Mandarin, spectacularly played and recorded, Essential listening.

    This is an incredible Firebird! According to the notes, the beautiful, crystal clear digital recording was made in 1979, that makes it one of the earliest. It makes me wonder if the early digital dark age of classical recordings could have been avoided if more people had done whatever they did right here. So many performances were affected by bad sound. In general, I find that when recordings get criticism it is not unusual that it can be related to a deficiency in the recorded sound.

    The comparison of the VPO with the cat is fabulous. 🙂

    Finally got this disc on your recommendation. Heard details I never dreamed I would hear before.
    Fantastic orchestra, fantastic conductors, fantastic repertoire. Thank you very much.

    Such fun watching this video! Only cat lovers would understand the comparison with the Vienna Phil, but you're so right.

    ‘Twas I who suggested to Cyrus that he reissue the VPO/Maazel Le sacre. Thank you, Cyrus! Great recording.

    The Dohnanyi Firebird was one of my very first digital LPs when it was first issued, and I've loved it ever since. Even bought the CD when issued.

    Thanks for reinforcing the excellence of these performances. I purchased the original Eloquence releases and they are fabulous. I wonder why, for this twofer release, Eloquence opted for Maazel's Rite and not Dohnanyi's, (also with the VPO) seeing as Dohnanyi conducts all the remaining works. You have to wonder about the marketing folks.

    I had this for. Christmas, yesterday! It’s terrific! I’ve a friend who knows Cyrus, the producer at Australian Eloquence, and he’s so lucky!

    I'm very curious about this reissue! I've never would imagined that the vienna philharmonic could play this repertoire in such wonderful way...

    Christoph von Dohnanyi + VPO = generally very excellent in my opinion. I wish there were more recordings with this combination. :(

    Dear Mr. Hurwitz: Now you are guilty again! Although I have the Maazel/VPO Sacre in a Japan Decca copy AND the Bartok in a Medici Arts/UNITEL DVD (coupled with Mendelssohn's "Scottish" Symphony) I'll have to order the Eloquence issue from Amazon after your paean to Von Dohnányi's Stravinsky (do I have any other choice?). I am a great fan of Maazel, whom I saw many times during my posting in New York and later in Vienna. And you are absolutely right concerning the Vienna Philharmonic. But when they want to play, no orchestra can compare to them, O my, THE SOUND, the glorious sound in that GLORIOUS Grosser Saal (although the Sacre was recorded at the Sofiensaal, just a little off the Ring). Congratulations again, you are making my quarantine!!

    I’m pretty stuck on the Boulez Mandarin but this is a great interpretation. Lots of detail. Same applies to the Stravinsky. Great recommendation David!

    Thanks so much for all the plugging of Dohnányi as a conductor! I hadn't thought of him much but now I feel compelled to acquire more of his recordings. As of right now, I only have some of his Mendelssohn but hope to acquire his Dvořák, the Bartók/Lutosławski concertos disc and now this twofer.
    Will you also make a video someday of what you consider the best Petrushka recordings? I hope to see more on the other Sibelius symphonies too!

    Decca is really unfair, I would say, in not releasing a box dedicated to the amazing combination between Cleveland orchestra and Von Dohnanyi...what a pity!!

    Agreed! I think ARG didn’t like the Maazel, but I loved it. Felt like I was hearing more of the music.

    Looks like it's duplication time if I want the Firebird and Portraits! I've got the old Decca Ovation version with just Petrushka and Mandarin - great performances as you said. First time I've heard the VPO described like a bunch of cats - interesting analogy.
    Do still have a soft spot for Chailly in Mandarin with the Concertgebouw. Also Dorati Detroit, but the coupling Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste not so great IMHO

    I'm glad to hear about Dohnanyi in these terms. I feel like he is one of the underated conductors of his generation. I even myself don't have more than two or three records with him in front of Cleveland orchestra (terrific Ives and Varese, by the way). I look forward to get this recomended record.

    I've always much preferred the complete Firebird over the suite. I mean, it's not really that much longer, is it?

    • @DavesClassicalGuide
      @DavesClassicalGuide  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, more than twice as long, depending on which suite you get.

    • @LyleFrancisDelp
      @LyleFrancisDelp 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DavesClassicalGuide Granted. I still much prefer the full ballet, but I can at least take the suite. Certainly NOT so with Petruchka. With that, it MUST be the complete ballet. We played it a few years ago in the Columbia Orchestra (community orchestra in central Maryland) and YES, those outer Tableux are a real bear.
