Why we have to talk about Zionism with David Miller | EI Podcast

  • On episode 47, Asa and Nora speak with David Miller, a sociology professor and leading critic of the Israel lobby who was fired by the University of Bristol on 1 October.
Miller was sacked after a years-long campaign of smears by that same lobby.
He talks about his ongoing work researching the history of Zionism, Israel’s state ideology, and how the lobby’s efforts to smear and silence him have only led him to speak louder.
“I think one of the things which has become clear in this process is that it’s necessary to talk about Zionism,” Miller tells us.
“This is about dismantling ideology,” he says, “the same way as we would talk about dismantling racism - racism is not just a set of ideas. It has material forms and practices.”
He argues that “If you want to dismantle and eradicate Zionism, you have to dismantle the apparatus which puts it in place.”
“The road to socialism in Britain, if there is such a thing, goes through the Zionist movement,” Miller says. “It doesn’t go around it, it goes through the Zionist movement. You can’t go around Zionism.”
With the successful campaign by Israel and its lobby to remove Jeremy Corbyn as leader of the Labour Party, these same forces have now moved on to academia and the rest of the public sphere in Britain.
Miller’s sacking is just the start. He says it is a question of “when people will have the confidence … to fight back and to say no to this? I think we’re in the foothills of this [campaign].”

People in the U.S. have no idea how much they are 'controlled'...just no idea of who is directing this path.

It's convenient for most to pretend it's not a real issue.

And the inability to control up until the last century is all you need to know about the history of the accusation.

Thank you so much for airing David Miller's truly inspiring talk about such an important political issue which I find so contemporary to my wellbeing today. There are so many rustic or yokel proverbs that would I think accurately describe a kind of 'via the media' method of expressing a variety of points of view - reminding folk of every class and educational background that they should spend some time and some effort in finding things by researching .... AND .... using the local library to request borrowing books from other libraries if necessary!

Excellent and very informative interview with David Miller. Thanks very much, Nora and Asa. Supporting David Miller and the principle of academic free speech will become an important focus for activists. And David Miller's advice must be taken to heart: "It is necessary to talks about Zionism"!

D.M: "I also want to note that this verdict is a massive vindication of the approach I have taken throughout this period which is to say that a genocidal and maximalist ideology like Zionism can only be effectively confronted by a maximalist anti-Zionism. Apologies, debate, and defensiveness of the sort illustrated by many on the left, and even in the Palestine Solidarity movement will not work. The Zionist movement cannot be negotiated with. It must be defeated."

This is very informative and important, but PLEASE provide subtitles - this man (honest and knowledgeable) speaks in a way that is very hard to follow PROPERLY for me and many other non-native speakers of British English. I am willing to spend an hour to study this material, but then I don't like to get only 73%

This subsequently led to disciplinary proceedings and he was dismissed from his role on 1 October 2021 after a hearing found he "did not meet the standards of behaviour" expected of university staff.
Prof Miller then later launched employment tribunal proceedings.
He claimed his belief that Zionism is "inherently racist, imperialist, and colonial" was a philosophical belief, a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010.
Zillur Rahman, who represented the academic at the tribunal, said his client has been "vindicated" and the "landmark case" marked "a pivotal moment in the history of our country for those who believe in upholding the rights of Palestinians".

Excessive long prayer times when there's work to be done on earth as it is in heaven how many time's 5 a day keeps Christian at bay? What do they pray about? What is written in the organizer? Those are good work's. The women have a separate prayer room or they sit in the lobby waiting for master drapes? It's just not that impressive but it was as a Caliphate. The desert grounds in Islamic countries seems like a curse I'm sure they have spots of vegetation but it's like you see what I see? Dry hot and looks uncomfortable for a Christian doesn't have to be told the sermon is a lecture that connects the word in life with a good affirmation of thought is how it falls in place by ignoring the obvious but some people can't stop to add the world problems to your plate . You eat like a pig chewing through bone.

There were around 20 million native Indians from several tribes, across the whole of the U.S, there were less than 2 million, when they'd finished with them, ruining their whole way of life, caged on reservations.
They almost wiped out their major food, clothing, and teepee covering source, Bison and starved them out.
Exactly what they're doing in Iraq, Syria and now Gaza, today.
