I have been watching quite a few of your videos now, and a few things bother me. Now my credentials are that I live in Java and have for 32 years and come from Australia. Right now I am staying at a Homestay on the South coast of East Java. I love Bali in many ways and have holidayed there many times as well as had long breaks there, conferences and just special celebration times as well as family times, and usually come through Bali on our way to and from Australia. I also love to look at travel guides. And truthfully, it's a little sad that we cannot get to Bali at the moment unless we are willing to be tested. Ok, now to voice my concerns. Balinese, many of them, have no say in the take over of their land, whether it be their own personal land or just Balinese land in general. Foreigners coming or Indonesians from other islands, and building luxurious hotels and villas, whether considered eco or not, have destroyed the Balinese's ability to self-determine their future and their land. Even Hinduism, which is not necessarily appreciated by all Balinese, is seen as something that must continue due to the ambience it gives for tourism. Are Balinese, in general, benefitting from this foreign take over where the foreigners do not feel they even have to be considerate of local Indonesian customs? Are foreigners taking over too much of the land and beautiful places?
Hello Heather, Thanks for watching and raising some great questions. Whilst not impossible, it is quite a difficult process for foreigners to purchase freehold land in Bali, so many foreign investors instead purchase leasehold land from Indonesian nationals. This means that the land remains in the hands of locals, and is returned to them at the end of the lease, which is definitely positive for ensuring the future of Bali. One of the things that makes Bali so magical is the natural scenery. There are green belts and protected areas, which are vital for ensuring significant areas aren't overdeveloped.
Heather if you're from Australia and concerned with indigenous property rights.. i nominate you to be the first to return your "colonized" home in Australia to the aborigines 🦘🤷🏿♂️
