Loading a Kymco Agility mobility scooter into a Subaru Outback estate using 2.2m (7ft) folding ramps

  • The mobility scooter fits in most medium sized estate cars quite easily with the tiller folded down. However, the seat must be removed first. I put the seat in upside-down, unfolded, with the seat back in the car’s back-seat foot-well. In the video, this process took longer than it should because I hadn’t removed the headrest from the car’s back seat first. Turning the scooter round, out-of-shot, also took too long, as did fitting the restraining strap when the scooter was in the car, because I forgot to put the ramps in first. This was only the second time I had loaded the scooter in the car, and it got quicker and easier the more often I did it. These lightweight (9 kg) aluminium ramps are ideal. Having two separate ramps rather than one wide ramp makes them easier to handle and to fit in the car.

The ramps I bought were “Scooter Ramp with Black Grip Surface (Pair)” from The Ramp People. www.theramppeople.co.uk/scooter-ramp-with-black-grip-surface . There’s quite a nice video on their website. I looked into several ramps on the internet before choosing these. It’s easier to carry 2 separate 9kg ramps like this than a single 18kg folding ramp. However, they are also a bit longer (222 cm, about 7 feet, compared with 183 cm, 6 feet): longer = less steep = safer. They have rubber feet at the car end with an angled surface, which is also probably safer. On the other hand, the folded length was too long to go widthways in the narrowest part of the boot for storage but would fit OK in the widest part (111 cm compared with 92 cm). Before I bought the ramps I thought I might store them in the boot when not using the buggy, but any folded ramps would take up quite a lot of space and I always kept them in the garage, so the folded length was not a problem. The ramps seem to be well made and durable. I found them easy to use and haven’t had any problems with them.

Thanks, ballkeeper666. I do go off-road with it and the 12 inch tyres are one reason I got this scooter. Stiles are still a problem, though...

I just bought this scooter today :) very cool I on my own could never manage that, but its really surprising a mobility scheme car's only have 2 that you can drive that into.... and that's a pretty standard sized scooter

I'm pleased with the scooter, particularly because of the 12 inch wheels. It's better over rougher ground than one with 10 inch wheels, although of course, scooters like this are not designed to be used off-road

If the scooters were a lot lighter we wouldn't have to mess about like this. Also the chairs ar big and cumbersome.I lift our scooter in the boot by hand heavy at 73 but i still manage.
