  • Mary Robinson won the presidential elections in Ireland on 7th November 1990. She is the first woman to receive a presidential mandate, with the aim and hope of doing things differently, and better. As she points out, we owe the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to a woman, Eleanor Roosevelt.

My name's Carol, I'm from Brazil. I have no way to express how much this video motivates me, was not aware of Mary, an inspiring woman, in my country the political leaders are not inspiring, in fact they cause us disgust and shame, this video has renewed my faith in better days, I hope Brazil may one day have leaders like Mary. Thank you for existing, Mary.

While it is certainly not my place to tell you who to be inspired by, It is remarkable how often people look far for what can be seen in its own unique way much closer to themselves. You too had a female President, one very strong, political activist, tortured during the dictatorship, who was part of the government that managed to overturn over a century of abject poverty for such a large number of your countrymen. And yet, the same class of those who've stolen, and oppressed, and drove the corruption for so long has again taken over, and in the process unseated the democratically elected leader who'd garnered considerable admiration around the world. The current state of affairs there is clearly a bad, bad sign of likely return to old school, unstable, impoverished, unequal Brazil.
You guys were of the very few economies who didn't suffer the massive blow of the world crisis of '08. One of the few with a *growing* middle class and shrinking inequalities. I remember Hillary Clinton speaking of Brazil's success in becoming self sufficient in Energy production, and how the US had to emulate that. These days it's the US that has a disappearing middle class, and growing inequality: here the rich get richer, and the poor get much, much poorer.
Brazil saw so many gains: that ended abject poverty for tens of millions, that protected the environment and species of the world's most extensive tropical forest. So many rights won for the unprivileged, for women, for children, for the native peoples that remain in your country and that need protection. So many that need protection. I wish more of you were inspired by your own inspiring leaders, but somehow the whole world decided to make the worst choices, all at once. I feel saddened by where we're taking this world. And I certainly feel saddened by the recent turn of your country, after the impressive surge of development it showed the world. Alas, it certainly doesn't seem to be the case any longer.

And yes, btw, this clip is quite nice and I can imagine it must be inspiring for a young woman, I wasn't trying to refute that, btw. I apologize for my rant's wordiness, it was certainly not meant against you or your comment.

I love the titles! It's only their names. I find that somehow relatable and... human.

The subtitles are meant for people who cannot hear or do not understand English very well. All people who participated in this project have English or French subtitles along their speech, according to the version chosen. These subtitles, as English is one of the most important languages in the world, along with Chinese and many others, may help reach more audience.
