- Quick sound demo of these beautiful drums from Tama; the Starclassic Performer. By the looks on documentation, shells are of Japanese Basswood & Birch. Super punchy shells, with great projection. Easy to record and to get a beautiful sound of thats for sure. These are some killer drums.
EDIT: There are indeed Starclassic Performer lines made of Basswood & Birch. But this one is 100% Birch, based on information I found form various collectors.
Recorded at Dirty Laundry Studios Brisbane QLD, Australia JUNE 2023

I bought mine in 98’ still play them to this day Dark cherry fade.
A perfection of sound
I still have mine in white pearl, all birch new in 2005. They were set up right next to a sweet set of dw's with same setup. I went back and forth playing on both and I have to say I did like the dw's a little better. Dw's were $2400 for the 5 piece shell kit, Tama's were $1200 for same. I went home with the Tama's and another $1200 in cymbals, stands, and sweet rack system. While after that bought nice Paiste Signatures, Sabian hihats n ride. Love it!
Those are keepers for sure, Tama ftw
They sound great!!
thank you, means a lot coming from you!
@@macaranas Thank you! It looks like you have the Beyerdynamic mic clamps but I can't tell what microphones you're using. Whatever they are they really capture the sound well. A friend of mine has this same kit only in a different color. After watching this video I might have to see if he will loan them to me for a bit. Thanks again! Great video!
@@RecordingDrumsWithBrad yep Beyerdynamic TG D58c on the 10 and 12 rack toms. D57c on floor tom.
@@macaranas Thank you, I'll check them out!
Beautiful sounding drums. I have always also loved the smaller sizes you are playing here, smaller drums very articulate.
Nice and smooth feel my friend, well done.
Nice

@@VermaRonitSonor. But I'm a Tama guy...
Wish I knew when my Tama Kit was made. Star Classic
Those MIJ drums were the greatest.
Had the same set in honey amber (I think thats what they named). Anyway, great kit. Yours sound awesome.
I liked your drumming and drum sound. You don't hear much about Basswood these days although it is apparently a soft light wood that is easily workable, which I think would translate into a low frequency sound (and maybe hence the name). I recall the Starclassic lines getting huge acclaim when they first appeared, and on this video you can hear why.
Thank you. Actually I will have to edit the description - these shells are 100% Birch. These being the Japanese variant of the Starclassic Performer.
Great sound! How do you know if they're birch or birch/basswood? The '98 catalog has them as birch/basswood but 99-through the early 2000's has them as all birch. The drums look identical (badges, hoops, even finishes). I'm eyeing up one in Amber Gold but I can't tell. Sounds great regardless.
I was confused when I was researching it myself. From memory, the biggest trigger was the "Made in Japan" designation on the badge. Maybe the Birch/Basswood variant is no MIJ?
The first generation with birch/basswood shells had plastic bassdrum hoops. Second generation like in this video had wooden hoops and all birch shells as I can recall.
Why is there a bitcrushing sound all over this recording?
bitcrushing on the floor tom?
I guess NO...because I don't know what that is...haaah
What skins do you use? Thank you
In this particular recording - good old Remo Pinstripes on batter of all toms, Coated Ambassador on the snare, PS3 on kick.
thank you, great sound!!
