The Tomb Raider remasters seem to keep the tone, the style, the lighting and overall feel just have higher graphical fidelity no extreme and obnoxious changes.
idk, I think the originals here definitely play up Lara's silhouette and definitely will push her into the foreground in shadow for dramatic effect. I notice that they seem to be really shy about that in the remaster. Probably because they know that the old school lighting was a lot more like a film trick and not real true to life lighting. But that's why old games look so iconic and remasters so often don't imo. Felt the same way about Spyro Reignited.
@@jeromyperez5532 the only thibg that stands out to me is I think they lightned her skin color alot to be in line with the revised version post 1 and 2, since was in concept orginally intially meant to be from columbia I think. How did they manage to make Angel of Darkness look worse?! Lara's shadow is missing, no reclections in the glass and the lasers now look more goofy (thicker) instead of ultra thin and to me more realistic
They are effectively porting all games to a mobile friendly engine with no reflections, shaders and whatnot. For a game that used newer tech that's a downgrade. Sound will also be worse because EAX tho it's available on win 10 and 11 with AlChemy is usually not supported (see Baldur's Gate Enhanced for example).
Maybe they will add it back? I seen the steam recommended requirements and it list a 2080 rtx so theres a chance they will add all those vfx and fancy lighting afterwards?
I feel like they might be adding it in the future? I think they're using the PS2 game as the base for the remasters and that version didn't have reflections either nor Lara's shadow on the wall. Only time will tell.
TR4 remaster look more polished than TR1-3 remastered. I can't say the same for AOD, it's looks almost worse than the original but they still have some months to make it better
The thing with AO6 is that it released for the PS2 so the textures are way better than PS1. A remaster only fixes the textures and since the difference between modern textures and the PS2 are smaller than with PS1, it seems like almost nothing changes. It's more noticeable in PS1
AOD will probably not have old graphics mode just made old game more compatible with stuff and fix bugs, if you ever tried to play Angel of Darkness on PC the settings menu is like a plane control board, and half the stuff will make it crash. I also bet they will remove EAX effects which is what most remasters do.
@@Stogiewise You do understand that 4 and 5 did not just get new textures but new lighting, new models for everting and textures and so much more. AOD barely got textures and the lighting is worse, there is no shadows anywhere, no reflections, no new models execpt Lara who is realy ugly and everything is so bright. The game aimed for the fmv graphics but back then ps2 couldnt handle those shadows and lighting. Now pc can but i think they cant do that because they dont know what is the engine for aod and they dont have aod code. They need to reverse engineer programs to do things in aod export import etc.. It is realy hard to fix aod!
I believe the developing team started working on tomb raider 4-6 first, before they started working on the original trilogy, because I believe the developers knew they wanted to remastered all the classic games so they probably started with the most difficult games first like AOD long with TR4-5 and that is probably why TR4 visually look better than TR1-3. I think they are trying to surprise us with Tomb Raider: The angel of darkness remastered possibly with all the missing content, bug fixes, and missing levels and rooms at the end when it releases
is it just me or do certain shots in the 4 remaster look like they have a bad HDR implementation? It looks great overall, then some shots have colors that are kinda squished and the contrast is weird (the shot of her running across the bridge with the statue in the background is my main example). Makes me wonder if they intend to have an HDR option and the footage looks ever so slightly off being converted back to SDR. Edit: I might be completely off, this issue I noticed is mainly in the area where there's fog and I think I can explain this. The original TR4 on PC has an option for bump mapping (kinda like normal maps iirc), which adds darkening layer over the details of textures to simulate depth. It always acted weird cause the bump maps would be laid over the fog, so you'd get the ridges and bumps of walls over the fog, even if the fog obscured the walls themselves. This might be why some spots looks off in the remaster, perhaps they haven't figured that out quite yet and it's not playing nice with the normal maps.
Yes. There's no before and after. And they've erased shadows and reflections as if they were going to remake them from scratch :) Not sure polygons will be touched. But I'm sure textures and special effects are going to be! Games in 2025 have minimum requirements. :)
Agreed. Tomb raider 3 doesn’t even feel like a tomb raider game to me, i get so tired of all the modern environments. The last revelation is back to the vibe of the original, i love it and can’t wait to play the remastered version!
@michaeljames6236 That's what I didn't like about the game. The first Indian levels I liked, but then the game fell apart for me after that. London and that high-tech military base didn't work for me. And I wasn't keen on the Antarctica part either. TLR was definitely a return to form. I enjoyed being lost trying to figure my way through the sprawling levels. 🙂
I always get the feeling the original feels like: the area you are in feels like it's really old. While the remaster feels like you are not in an old abandoned place / tomb but in one which has been painted over and been kept clean for over centuries.
This new collection looks like its deploying a lot more polygons into the environment to define details, rather than what the original trilogy remaster did, which appeared to be more focused on overlayering hi-res textures. Nice!
I'm really happy about this (especially 4 for the nostalgia) but they definitely need to update AoD. Right now it indeed looks worse than both the OG (no shadows) and the PS1 remasters. I have faith in them though, still got time

Maybe I'm nitpicking, but it feels too bright. So much of the atmosphere was down to just how heavy those shadows were in the tombs.
