- Mohamed El Bacha is a taxi driver in Essaouira, Morocco. His trusty companion: a Mercedes-Benz 240 D which is over 40 years old and, despite covering millions of kilometres, is still in service. Mohamed El Bacha and his Mercedes-Benz have been working together for 25 years day-in, day-out. In the past, they had to tackle sandy tracks and rough roads with loose surfaces, but nowadays most roads are paved. When i visited i loved the pride a lot of people seemed to take in beautiful vintage Mercedes cars, i love the working look on them. Doing what they were designed for, gathering miles in comfort and reliability. I also saw a lot of old Peugeots which was cool. Super friendly and warm people too

Great honor that mercedes made for this taxi driver. I also have a w124 from 90 250D and she never broke down once, and she still running flawlessly.
My parents have still drive their 1977 240D. Fantastic vehicle and the style is superior to anything on the road today.

But he was mistaken in the interview ;) The journalist who wrote the article (mb4.me/MrszNAvk) checked the car papers with him: in fact, he bought it in 1991. Surprise for him that he and his car have the 25th anniversary this year :)

These old Mercedes are the best cars ever made. It is surprising that cars made for autobahns in the 70´s could resist more than fifty years on Moroccan roads, hard climate and harsh conditions of use.

I am a moroccan and I used to be in this taxis for my travels and for going to work, it is clear that the state of a majority of them is not fit for using anymore, is there any chance that Mercedes-Benz thinking of a new model that can be used for taxis in Morocco for a good price and keeping the 240 design signature, that will be a good gesture that we are expecting from your prestigious brand,

No, they'll never do that, the 240 was a very bad investment because it didn't break too much, so the company didn't benefit from selling changing parts, and major cars benefits come from maintenance and not the actual car itself.
You should know that all new diesel Mercedes have renault engines, and there is a mercedes citan which is just a renault kangoo with a mercedes badge, and they did all this to save cost even though they sell cars with even more expensive price tags.
trust me mercedes is not as good as everybody though they were in the 70s.
I my self as a morrocan living in the netherlands knows that mercedes benz is never going to do that because mercedes is an inofative brand and is is not looking in the past but in the future by the way i am 16 years old

You're totally wrong, the W123/W124 and W210 are still going strong on some Moroccan roads as grand taxis.. the Dacia are cheap prototype of Renault with expensive parts and lots of issues

These are some good quality cars that Mercedes benz made, we have it in Morocco as Taxis we use it everyday and what can i say it is a very good car, but sadely most of them now are changed to new Nissan Evalias and Dacias, we are going to miss them a lot !!!
I have always liked those vintage Mercedes Taxis i see in Essaouira. I have even had this kind of conversation with one of the drivers. I should have made this ad myself and sold it to Mercedes. I am so stupid.

car, came from Morocco to Malaga in Spain and from Spain to Denmark. I have the original papers and documents from the very first owner. The car is now in Sweden and I treat it as a family member, of course. It starts every time :-)

Actually, this car is commonly and broadly used in Morocco as a Taxi (connecting cities, regions, and district within big cities), more than 70% of people of this country use or had used this car at least once, reason why i can say that this car belong to the "Tamghrabite" (Identity). now Mercedes Benz feels that it is time to say goodbye...because there is no other choice for them...

please MERCEDES make a new model of 240 for morocco .. you can sell thousands of them ... last week i came from saidia to oujda and i was riding in a volkswagen caddy taxi .. evan though i had my own seat but the travel experienxce was off, i mean when i travel with mercedes 2 persons ride in the front seat ( the driver has it's own seat) and 4 in the back seat so when arriving in destination i always dont feel my right ass part or i could not hear whith an ear .. i mean that is the beauty we grow up with ... those feeling .. the feel of the tightness in the back .. now they start using VW caddy ..dacia lodgy ..fiat and ssongyong...where is the governement ? a unique moroccan signature is dying ...

my grandap had Merc taxi since 1981! the car is still in service ,and its driven by another guy , in fact i cant believe how this could be possible! The Merc is still moving and its in good condition after almost 40 years, just wow!! Respect Mercedes! :)

there has been a recent rant between taxi drivers and the government because of this. The government wanted to replace the old Mercedes by newer cars but from a different brand, I ll let you imagine the outcome. lol

Since the w123 and less the w124 there is no diesel engine that can do more than 500K Km
I have a w123 240d with a 700k on the counter and 0 problem with the engine. If the Mercedes will rebuild that tank again another industrial revolution will set off.
