The Mercedes-Benz 280 is a Bulletproof Beauty

  • Where is the beauty in an object if it isn't functional? About forty years ago, Mercedes-Benz set out to re-establish their reputation. Unfotunately, Benz had developed an infamy for underpowered engines and questionable ability. With the W114/115 chassis and particularly the brand-new M110 engine, Mercedes was on the offensive. The "new generation" of Benzes debuted in 1968, designed by Paul Bracq.
But for Bernard Bredehorn and his 1972 Mercedes-Benz 280S/8 the W114 holds more personal memories. His grandparents who lived quite far away had a W116 280SE (the predecessor of today's Sonderklasse, or 'S'pecial-class) and he fondly remembers the mechanical noises and sensations he experienced while playing in the rear footwells. His experience with this car however, was anything but easy going. For a long time this car sat in a friend's garage, awaiting restoration, and Bredehorn only saw it when he returned home during school breaks. Each time he returned to it, he had to exhume it from the piles of junk sitting atop the neglected 280.
Finally he was able to take the car apart, do the body work, and get it running even though it turned into a race against his child's birth and the coming winter...

Lost count of how many W123's I I've had. A mix of 240D's and 300D's. I grew up with those cars and diesels in general. I love & trust them. Robust and reliable. Also have a W126 300SD thats likely to have 7-800,000 miles on it. It has retired. A few W124's, couple 300E's one a TE 4matic and my daily driver, 87 300D turbo diesel that is about to have its OM603 swapped for an OM606! Hopfully a T56 6-speed too. The making of a superturbodiesel!
My favorite and most missed Mercedes was a beautiful black W110 190D, the fantastic fintail! My family had it when I was a kiddo, me and dad took it out for nice Sunday drives once in a while. Loved that car, the look, the smell, the push/pull control for the starter/glow plugs..... Special!

Nice moody video, but no sounds of the M-B 6-cylinder growling under acceleration?! Just about every other Petrolicious video has ample recordings of the cars engine being worked. Why nothing for this car??? My uncle (in Germany) had one of those engines in the 280 SE and I was lucky enough to drive it a few times. The engine sounded just as nice as a BMW straight-6.

These are the Mercs that all the people who own new Mercedes expected to buy, something that will run nearly forever with very little going wrong.
What they get is expensive cars that after the warranty is up it's a pretty piece of junk with miserable resale value.
A 6 year old Benz with over 100,000 miles is a sure bet for a bunch of aggravating issues and persistent warning messages for the next $1000 service.

      @freibier 9 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Amesie's Corner Yes, the 80s/early 90s Mercedes (especially the Diesel versions) were built to last. Like the guy in the video said, back then all the parts were designed to be able to handle much more than what they ever experienced in normal usage. Even the paint was much thicker than it is today. There is a reason that the stereotypical German taxi of that time is a Mercedes Diesel - one million km is nothing for them. And then in the late 90s the accountants took over.

I am born '68 and for my generation this 280 with the double bumpers was the revelation for us 10,0 0-63 and revving up to 6000 was already. I remember my dad bringing us to a family party in 1979 with such a 280, handshifted and he asked my grandma : how fast are we going ? She said I suppose 90km/h(56m/h), my dad said: we have passed 140 km/h already a while ago (88m/h) and the six was still purring like a kitten. ( On the Bundesstrasse between Lueneburg and Hamburg I have to add)

I owned 2 1972 280 SEL's. One I drove for a couple of years with no problems. The other one I sold to a friend and after he drove it for 2 months, everything on the car broke. It was a money pit and it cost my friend probably $10-12 thousand dollars to keep it running. He only paid me $4,000 and when it was all done, he still only had a car worth $6, 000 and had invested $14,000-16,000.
Plus it only got 10 MPG! It was a monster on the highway with the 4.5 V8, but hardly worth all the maintenance.

(Platzmangel)

Sort of the same thing I had for my mothers 1957 Chevy Bel Air! That car just ran and ran and ran, for some reason mom give it to one of my Uncles, I guess he needed a car, well he wrap himself around a tree in it- he walked a way from it- family never said anything but it didn't take long for me, I was young then about 15 years old to figure out my Uncle had a drinking problem at the time! I would think the big problem with that car would be finding parts when you need them, after all its a 43 year old car- might be easier in Europe than it would be states side, I had VW Jetta for 20 years and part were very hard to find in the end or not at all- unless I wanted them fabricated!

The M110 is up there as my least favourite MB engine of all time. I had a 114 280ce, a few 123 and 126 280s over the years too. Fair to say I was only ever stranded by a 280 once, a wiring fault to the fuel pump, I just didn't like them. I have a 220d 115 now, plus 107 and 116 models.
Love the colour of this 114 though, classic 70s yellow.

My sister in law drives one - well she waits on the side of the road in one anyway - then she talks about how reliable it is, she has blinders and is very much in an abusive relationship with her Mercedes - it doesn't love her back and it leaves her stranded and crying regularly.

you write all that bitching about the car and all you can say is that the blinkers dont work?
have you driven one in a diesel? or a euro spec gasser without the POS US spec carb.
i cant see anything majorly wrong with these cars besides vacuum locks and even then its not that hard to chase down some bad rubber connectors.
the m110 was known for loud valves but it was not a unreliable engine. worst part was the fuel system. i owned a euro FI model too and it was a huge improvement.
double A arm front with Zerk fittings for everything. you dont see that in w123 cars.
along with the new IRS and all wheel disc brakes made the car really handle for a couch on 4 wheels

dsruddell I like the W114/5 very much. I owned a W123 280 TE 'estate' with the M110 twin cam engine. It was very rusty and really drunk the juice. The engine was uncharacteristically 'sporty' for a Mercedes. The car was pretty dependable. I liked the interior of the W123 better than my current W124 400E. My 400E hasn't been trouble free, wiring loom issues and elec throttle issues, overall I wish it was a 300 E with K Jetronic and less electronics but when it runs it is STILL a joy to drive

I actually have a 1991 190E 2.3-16 EVO 5 speed and I think its one of the last of the BEST...People say what they will about British Sports Cars..I AM British although I have lived in the states since the age of 6. Im 42 now and still have Resident Alien Green Card as does my Dad..We will never give up our heritage..That probably sounds pointless for me to say but I say it because I think or rather know,as do MANY in general, that my statement I made about the 2.3-16 190E being the last of the best and the reason for that is what? The British engineering..Yes..AMG osnt anywhere on this car....Cosworth sure is though..and I remember watching these cars running all day AND BEATING BMW and its E30 M3.The EVO WAS NOT the only 190E with a bit of help breathing ....If its a 2.3-16..It is in fact breathing through a Cosworth messaged Head and thats how a proud Englishman who is actually named after my Famous WWII RAF ACE Grandfather so HE EARNED the right..I was just the 1st to snatch up my "REPARATION"..Truth being my dad wont even ride in it..My Grandad is also rolling in his grave if he had been buried.lolHe was cremated but a MAN I held in highest regard! ANYWAY..I think im justified just enough and It is the only German car Ill ever own..Anytime I go to Dealership for a part,it seems there are just as many in the Service Advisors line as there are in the New car sales lot...I proudly display 5'×3.5' inch Union Jack Fender Badges and they look just great with the factory body kit along with the Factory front Valance and Rear wing..Its a Great car..Thanks to the German engineer which had the balls to even say COSWORTH in a Boardroom which was "surely' surrounded by the 3 random letters being...A M G...The car IS an Icon and I will give Germany their engineering credit WHICH IS OFTEN TO TECHNICAL..Which ends up more than not being slightly simplified by another company or 2 which reengineer that product into one that lasts longer due to the fact its simpler.CB

Can you guys keep focus for more than 2 seconds?
I know you will claim it was artistic expression, but there is no way you were only managing to pull focus for a couple of seconds at a time. Buy yourself a proper camera and or HD monitor. It will vastly improve the quality of your work.
