    Hi! Thanks for this. Do Garmin watches (I just got an Instincy 2) update your VO2 on the fly or do you have to initiate a test or procedure of some kind?

    Hi there, this maybe a stupid question, but can Vo2 Max be measured indoors on a treadmill if there is a GPS on a Vivoactive 3?

    • @Running-Directions
      @Running-Directions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Paul, your Garmin Vivoactive 3 won't be able to estimate your VO2Max when indoors on a treadmill. It needs to get measurements of your speed, distance and effort/HR and uses those numbers to crunch and come up with a score. If you're on a treadmill indoors, even if you can get GPS signal - it will think you're not moving and won't have all the data it needs to crunch.

    I perform forerunner55 garmin users, when the first time used for running, vo2max performed, but why when running or sports did not appear.

    • @Running-Directions
      @Running-Directions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi dit, I'm not sure I understand your question. But I think you're asking why doesn't the VO2Max score get shown automatically after every activity. In which case my answer is the same as I gave to Dani Y at the beginning of this message thread = your Garmin will take measurements, but won't flash up the score every time you've completed an activity. But it should flash up a score if/when there is a change/increase in it's estimate of your VO2Max. Improvements take time, so it can take several weeks for it to register any changes. You can still check the device or your phone app in the meantime. Hope that makes sense.

    Hey do you know how to get information for 735xt cycling vo2 ? I’ve got the red running HR monitor don’t know if that makes a difference but watch not measuring vo2 max after exercise ? Do I need a power meter as well or something. All profile information filled out accurately. Hope you can help where I’m going wrong. Thank you !

    • @Running-Directions
      @Running-Directions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jess. Yes, I believe you need to have a power meter that will pair via ANT+ to your Garmin as well as a HRM strap to get VO2Max for cycling.

    Any idea why mine isn’t showing my VO2 Max levels?

    • @Running-Directions
      @Running-Directions  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @justinroman7794. I know of a few potential reasons: VO2Max estimates require several outdoor runs with GPS enabled of at least 10 to 15mins. These need to be of sufficient intensity to reach a HR that is at least 70% of your max for a min of 10mins. If you don't meet these criteria you won't get a VO2max estimate. Also your personal data needs to be accurate (age, gender, weight etc) and if you know it, it's worth entering your actual MaxHR too.

    Despite following all the instructions to the letter my Garmin 245 isn't measuring VO2 max, i still get the same message run outdoors for 10 min with HR

    • @Running-Directions
      @Running-Directions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Leon, sorry to hear that your 245 isn't measuring VO2 max for you. There are a few things I'm aware of that may be worth double checking: First make sure that you've completed all your profile information. Because your device will need to use your profile data for the VO2Max calculations. Secondly - make sure that the unit is snuggly fitting, as if it's loose whilst you run - it may prevent the unit being able to read your HR properly/continuously.

    Unfortunately, studies have shown Garmin to be totally inaccurate for both estimating VO2max and maximal heart rate.

    • @Running-Directions
      @Running-Directions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the info! I mention in my blog article that Garmin's figures for VO2Max can only be an estimate and that it doesn't really matter what the number is. But training in a way that is targeting improving VO2Max is a good move.

  • @Feemy

    Is VO2 max supposed to be recorded after every run? Because I'm not getting readings since my first 2 runs.
    I'll prefix this by saying that I've only had the Garmin Fenix 6 Pro for 2 months and these were my first runs with it.
    I went for a run last Thursday (27th May) and then again on Monday (31st May) and got VO2 max readings of 49 both times. However they are readings on 24th May and 31st May (one week apart) and I did not go for a run on 24th May.
    Today (3rd June) I went for another run, all the criteria for VO2 max reading satisfied and I did not get a VO2 reading. I did get Load and Heat Acclimation readings though in Training Status.
    On my Fenix 6 Pro it says the last reading for VO2 max was on Monday. (49, Excellent, Monday) two runs ago.
    Why is there no reading after 3rd Junerun? The fact that there was no reading after my run on 27th is strange too. Instead there is a reading on 24th May when I didn't go for a run.
    When exactly are you supposed to get VO2 max readings? I thought it was after every run and that is what the Garmin support person told me when I called them. However, from the two VO2 max readings I have, it seems like they are taken weekly (which doesn't make sense)

    • @Running-Directions
      @Running-Directions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Dani, I believe that your Garmin will be 'taking' readings, provided that you're running outside for >20mins with GPS enabled. But it won't necessarily tell you what your VO2Max is - unless there's a change from the last estimate. VO2Max improvements aren't particularly rapid. So it may take several more runs before your Fenix will have enough data to crunch and decide if you've improved or indeed dropped back. Then it will let you know what your new VO2Max estimate is at that time. Until then it's still 49 = no change. Hope that makes sense.

    • @Feemy
      @Feemy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Running-Directions thank you so much for that explanation! I've asked everywhere and no one has been able to provide me with a proper answer /explanation, including Garmin themselves. All they said was that not every will provide a VO2 max reading even if you satisfy all the criteria (GPS on, run for more than 10 minutes, HR to be 70% of Max HR for 10 continuous minutes)
