    @Craft Computing
    Jeff,
    There are two things that should be put into your movie.
    1. In TrueNAS 12, before setting-up a replication task you need to ensure that you turn on SSH. By default it is turned off. So, if they just try to set-up a replication and miss this step then they will not have a successful task creation.
    2. When you run a one time replication task you can turn-off Read Only Access. If you set-up a scheduled task, it will copy the data, but it will be in read only access. Once they have the replication complete, and fully replicated to their other server, they need to go to the server where the replication was done, they need to go to Pools>edit options> Advanced Options>and select Read Only Off.
    It took me a few days to figure it out on my own. I searched the TrueNAS Community forum, everything was referencing 11.0 and older and did not really help me in this situation.

    Nice video!
    9:06 CraftComputing: "I don't need those [snapshots] quite as solid as my CraftComputing backups..."
    Also CraftComputing 20 sec later: "But remember, just like RAID, snapshots are not a backup..."

    Make a video on how to grow FreeNAS server if someone is on a budget and cannot afford to have 5-6 HDD at once.

      @@juanpablo-vn1xo yes I saw all those videos , I am not talking about cheap pc parts I am talking about the storage specifically. Growing your storage pool overtime on FreeNAS can be tricky when you only have 1 or maybe 2 HDD at the moment and wants to add 1 or 2 HDD at a time.

      @@unknown_channel_name This is the one scenario that ZFS is really not made for right now. As much as I like FreeNAS (happy user for more than 10 years) you might want to look at alternatives, if that is your use-case.

    Edit: fixed it by switching to TrueNAS SCALE (which is currently in alpha). In that, everything just worked :) Despite being in alpha. I hate FreeBSD's complicated ACL setup.
    Original msg: no matter what I do, my user login is not accepted via SMB even though I created the user with the SAMBA permissions (which is default anyway) and I did the ACLs the same way. For you and Tom it just works, for me it just won't accept my username no matter what. TrueNAS is so stressful. I recreated the user. I recreated the SMB share. I've created a new dataset to test it. I've restarted the SMB service. I've restarted the VM itself. It just won't let me log in with my user at all. I can log in with the user with SSH and I know the password is correct. I can access the dataset with that user from SSH. I can even use SSHFS in Linux as a client.

Do you have any hardware recommendation for cache? and what about using Ryzen for Truenas? there are some compatibility or drivers issues? thanks you.

    So I have write permisions in my storage pool, but I don't have write permission in the data set I created. It lets me create a folder but when I try to give it a name or rename something or delete something it says "You require permission from TRUENAS\user to make changes to this folder" even though I did log in with that user. My user is in the wheel group and I set the ACL in my dataset to have read and write permission on the group@. Am I missing something here? I honestly have no clue why this won't work.

However, I have added a test user from the group test on the ACL and gave him "full control" he can't access the share, and I get a permission denied message from windows. Wait, what? if you restore a file by copying from it's "shadow copy", you would duplicate the storage requirements wouldn't you? The snapshot version plus the identical manual copy. Not to mention any access rights, file change timestamp etc would have been changed to inherited defaults. Isn't there a better way to restore?

    Snapshots technically are a backup, hence why they let you do things like revert an accidental deletion or restore a corrupted file. That's a backup; opposed to RAID which can tolerate hardware failure but cannot do rollbacks as RAID is redundancy rather than backup. Snapshots just aren't very _good_ backups by themselves as you have your "backup" sitting in the same failure domain as your data.

I like the snapshots idea, but when I try to Google my way through how storage intensive they are... I'm not really getting anywhere. I assume its 1:1 for the initial snapshot (1 TB of data = 1 TB snapshot) - but are incremental changes full 1 TB, or are they just the changes between the snapshots?

    • @Shane-Singleton
      @Shane-Singleton 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I were to guess it probably just backs up the files with deltas are going to really matter. If a file never changes, such as a large 4K quality MKV or MPG of Harmy's Despecialized Star Wars Trilogy for example, then there is no need to create a snapshot. If it's a file with a lot of changes such as a TH-cam video edit project then it probably figures out what has hanged and saves the data. Although you could be right and each snapshot could be an entirely new copy of the entire file. Although I have no data to really answer definitively.

    • @CraftComputing
      @CraftComputing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They are differential copies, so it only stores extra copies of the bytes that change. It will also hold onto that data after deletion, until the last snapshot with that data is removed.

    I'm now to TrueNAs coming from Xpenology and I think I've screwed up my setup something bad. Basically all client machines will be Windows based. 2 Windows 10 physical machiens and the rest Windows VMs with Server 2016 and 2019- I'm the only user accessing all this from the LAN, all the servers have one username/pass that I manage/access them from and teh Win 10 machines share a different comboi of username/password. Both those usernames have been set up in TrueNAS and are members of the same newly created group (also made root a member).
    When I set up all my datasets I didn't set set type to SMB, missed that so they are all set to generic and for all shares I missed setting the default share type so they are all whatever "no option set" might be.
    For ACLs I set restricted and full permissions for owner@ and group@, is that correct? (looking now at the ACL list for each share there's a bunch of entries I never set).
    Is there any way to fix this and optimize things for better working and proper setting of permissions all over?

    Quite aggressive snap shots on that freenas as its doing it every hour, I norm just set it to 12am and 12pm for snapshots and 2am for daily backup snapshots to a dedicated drive
    The isolated backup server that pulls the data from the main server so main server can't tell backup server to delete anything (in the event the main server it self is compromised not just cryptolocker stuff they won't be able to command the backup server to delete the backups)
    this is why I find it amusing when large companies get cryptolockered and they don't have at least one or more system images to restore the system of there servers and data backups (Garmin been recant one) it's not a backup if the main server can access the backup server (backup server should always be pulling the data from the target and the backup server should be isolated) to many people use raid as a backup and snapshots/backups that can be just deleted by the host server

    Love your videos but IPAs are over rated I'd rather have a good thick Wheat. The hops kills the sweat fruity flavors. Circus Boy The Hefeweizen, Hocus Pocus good ABV and smooth fruit taste. Or a maybe a good Leinenkugel they have some strong Weiss, Bock, Helles and Lagers that are need to try.
