At the beginning of October 2019, our church bought it's own building and with the help of others, we turned an old office building into a space for fellow believers to gather and worship Jesus! If you are not going to include a ground wire, the electrical box on the back of the lamp socket should be a plastic one.

Be careful saying pro tip when you don’t even know what the wires are. Those bulbs take AC power, that means the black is hot, not negative and the white is neutral. At least you managed to accidentally get the correct wires on the proper terminals. DIY projects are great, but if you’re doing a tutorial you should make sure the terminology is correct so someone else doesn’t get hurt. Also missing is a ground, not something I would advise. At least the “can” is a plastic insulator.

@@WeTalkTone question so we have the lights set up but on the dimmer they are controlled fine the only problem is that they don't fully dim to 0% is that normal?
@Daniel Banda yes we had this same problem! Hunter figured it out after playing with the settings on the dimmer boxes for a little bit - I just sent him a text but it’s midnight here. I’ll keep you updated!
Alright, Hunter got back to me and said dip switches 11 and 12 but need to be switched to the on position. Let me know if this helps!
@@WeTalkTone You guys are quick to respond! thanks for that, unfortunately Im using a dimmer pack A had lying around ADJ DP-DMX20L 4 Channel. So its doesn't have any dip switches, but I will try pressing a few buttons because even when we hit black out on our dmx software everything turns off BUT these lights, they just dim down. If you or Hunter might have any other ideas, let me know. Im waiting of the materials for the Led strips to get here tomorrow so wish us luck!

For 120v AC, black is hot and white is neutral which is similar but not the same as ground.
How are these holding up? If you do more in the future, consider looking up diffusion gels and similar. Rosco has some.
They’ve been great! Are you recommending the gels are used instead of spray painting the diffusion on? That could definitely work, but the can of spray paint was much more cost efficient.

If you glue the covers in, how are you going to change a burnt out bulb?
My bandmate and I constructed our lights out of #10 cans, electrical cords, colored gels, and wood faceplate screwed to the cans. They've worked well over the years and if a bulb burns out we take the faceplate off and change it. Super easy on a next to no cost budget
Hot glue is definitely by no means permanent. The faces can easily be pulled off and then re hot glued after changing the bulbs. But, if you or anyone has another way, please feel free to do it different than us! DIY is all about improving or finding better/easier/simpler ways of doing something
GREAT idea! I’ll probably implement these in our stage design. Having said that, you guys should’ve used something non-plastic for the “bucket.” Not sure what to do about frosted front. Maybe parchment paper (to keep it budget friendly)? And mount the electrical boxes to the 2x4 before attaching the light. This way, the screws points the other direction and don’t risk poking the wires and creating a short (huge fire hazard).
This is beautiful, but these details make it a bit too dangerous.
There is a bit of fire hazard here, especially if they do not use an LED bulb.
Ours our ran at about 10% power the majority of the time they are on. I have not tested them at full blast for long periods of time, but I would agree, the front diffusion would likely get very hot and could potentially melt. I don’t think however, the idea behind this style of light is to be ran at full power…. Maybe short bursts on time with music, and that has never been a problem for us.
@@WeTalkTone thank you for clarifying. It makes sense. I just wanted to bring that up in case someone has no idea what they’re doing and make a big boo boo. Especially with the screws poking into wires. I’ve been blown away by how clueless some volunteers are; not intended to be mean.

When you connect the 2 end lights to your support beam....
How do you connect the rest of the lights to the same beam? I mean, wouldn't the others be off- centered and not straight across in a line because the beam would now be in the way.

Hey, thanks so much! Unfortunately, we don’t really have any good video of them in use - our church underwent some changes and we haven’t really had anyone to learn a lighting system and program them for the services. They are now more or less set up in scene presets (we have a green themed preset, or orange, or whatever color to match our pro presenter back ground. But unfortunately, they’ve only ever been fully programmed to run from Ableton Live a handful of times, and none with good video to document it.
I like the final result a lot.... What I don't like is incandescent bulb in a plast bucket. How did that end up?

This looks to be the correct gauge, but I’m not sure what they use to insulate the wires inside having never used it before. It looks to have good ratings, but use at your own risk. I would test a unit out before wiring up a whole stage with these.

These "par cans" are not par cans due to the absence of a gel frame or focusing tube. The title of this video is misleading because these lights seem to be blinder duty only. For a stage wash/flood I would use PAR16 "birdie" cans for a smaller stage like this one or PAR38's for a medium stage and PAR64's for a larger stage. As a spot light I would use an ERS "Leko" (Ellipsoidal reflector spot). Also by replacing the 70w Halogen with a dimmable LED PAR38 of ~15-20w you can cut the heat tenfold and run the lights at 100% power with less heat. To emulate halogen color temperature you can use a lightbulb of around 3200k, incandescent will be 2700k.

Glad to hear! The little white box was an ADJ My DMX 3.0 - they also make a rackmount version that you can store presets on for when you don't want to hook up to a computer. The program was ADJ My DMX (I think it comes with the hardware, or you could probably find a download online)

There's not much to say, especially when working with just the two prong cords and plugs like we used - white is on silver and black goes to bronze. This video may help, but he is using a three prong (and three wire) set up:

It doesn’t get too bad for the sets we play at church. For anything longer, we just set a mini fan in there and it does plenty

If you're looking for a bush league approach to live audio and stage lighting, look no further than your local churchies. Constantly putting a human face on the phrase "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing." The experience and knowhow of a garage band of 16 year olds, but with 150 times the budget. I assume they're looking to "the lord" to protect their building and lungs.

I unfortunately would not be able to recommend any physical boards… the only lighting board I’ve had any experience was an old outdated ETC Congo, which I would not recommend. Every system I’ve worked with since then had been software/computer based.
Hello, I am wondering what fixture profile you guys used for the flood lights? I know that through the dimmer pack we are able to turn it on and off but how do I make it do the programs shown on the video? Were they connected to dmx software when the programs were happening? thank you!
Yes, we were controlling it with a program called myDMX 3.0 from ADJ
I don't recall off the top of my head, but I think it's just the most basic single channel fixture. I'll have to check this Sunday!
Any heat issues? Seems like they would get hit and melt.
We average ours at about 30% brightness, and don't produce much heat at all around there. Using higher outputs during effects should be fine, but I wouldn't recommend leaving them on at 100% for hours on end.

The software we used is the software that comes with their hardware. I think it’s also called MyDMX or something similar.
for the love of your deity, please ask your local fire inspector to look at this. I swear, guys, this isn't a good idea at all. Those floods can be very dangerous, they get stupid hot and those flimsy planters won't hold up for long.. they'll sag, and once they hit the bulb, it's going to ignite, and THAT smoke is as dangerous as the fires. Please, gentlemen, I implore you to have it checked out before you continue. Yours truly, someone who has some really stupid stuff and lived to warn others about it.

What size/brand wires are you using for these?
I want to say 16 gauge but I'm not entirely sure I'm remembering correctly. They were the bare wire you can get cut-to-length at Home Depot in their electrical section.

The box is just a typical usb into your computer, and then from that box you run your dmx cords to the lights. It’s been so long ago that I don’t remember much about setting it up in that particular program. But, TH-cam will have some excellent resources on it, I am sure!

OK, I love your DIY spirit, but this is BAD ADVICE... Hot Bulbs inside a PLASTIC container? There's a reason Par lights are METAL. These lights, when run continuously, will get very hot and will likely melt the plastic. Also, with no ventilation for the lights, the heat will build up quickly, presenting a real fire hazard.
