I was about 50 when I fell in love with bluegrass. I barely have time for anything else these days. Tony Rice was (and will remain) one of the brightest stars in the field, his playing astounds me.
Comparisons to other singers are subjective. I have always loved Tony's vocals, especially on his later albums, most notably on "Native American" and "My and My Guitar". Tony's loss of his singing voice was truly tragic, for him and his fans. For this song, recorded when it was, I prefer Clarence White's cover, but I can listen to Tony Rice all day, and sometimes I still do.
Of my record/CD collection, I have more by Tony than any other artist. SO very fortunate to have seen him several times in concert and bluegrass festivals. ♥ RIP He was the best!!!
Never knew of you And took a chance on this video as I was comparing versions of this great song. You’re right up at the top. Is someone else noted how did they live so long without hearing of you? I’ll be listening tomorrow if you from now are excellent job incredible talent thanks for posting
Rest in heaven, Tony. One of the greatest of them all
Acoustic guitar music will always have a place for TR's music, he may grow more famous over time.
How'd I live so long and not hear of Tony Rice ? Beats me. He's great musician and singer !
John Prewett you’re just less fortunate I guess. Tony Rice was always one of my biggest influences on guitar. Great vocalist too in his day.
In my case you find things when you need them. His a good man and I'm proud to say I know him.
I grew up around men like Tony Rice Del Mccoury Bill Monroe groups like
Johnson mountain boys third time out, but I had to get into my fuck up years till I appreciated it

The greatest acoustic guitar player to ever hold a Martin!!!
After Clarence Whie.
TR is one of my heros
Was late to find out one of my absolute favorite guitarists passed away. The music luckily is forever.
Tom Paxton is the original author and singer though. Needs to be mentioned.
Wonderful as usual! :)

Did Tony write that 2nd verse about the subway? Can't find that in Tom Paxton videos
best version ever made
Your a good player when you make a saxaphone player jealous
I love my phone's going to die I'll call you when I can
Very good, but Tom Paxton original takes some beating for emotion.
I love Tony, don't get me wrong, but I like the Clarence White version better.
sparkomatic crazy you are
Not a contest!
