Perry Maxwell's Prairie Dunes - Original 9

- For the first 20 years of its life, Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas, was a nine-hole golf course designed by Perry Maxwell. Twenty years later, Maxwell's son Press completed the 18. The full course as it stands today is terrific, but there's something special about that original nine. In this video, Andy Johnson and Garrett Morrison discuss all of the 1937 Perry Maxwell holes at Prairie Dunes.

Perry Maxwell is such an underrated architect. I had a chance to play Hardscrabble CC (Fort Smith, Ar) which was a Perry Maxwell design and it was splendid. I can't wait for the PGA this year at Southern Hills. Great video Andy and Co.
Perry is truly the best. Got the privilege of playing Prairie Dunes last year and it is truly a remarkable place. Can’t wait to go see Dornoch post restoration.
Guys, I love the format of the video with the in depth look at each hole and the insight of how to play it rightly or wrongly. Looks like an amazing course I’d love to play someday. Keep up the great work!
I played PD this year and feel in love, I’ll be back year after year. Think I’ll try the original 9 routing next time. #8 is the best hole I’ve ever seen.
Big fan of the hole by hole breakdowns! So much easier to digest and get a feel for the shots instead of overarching conversation on the course as a whole.

You need to manage your expectations when you come here. The layout is unusual for Kansas, which makes it neat. However, it is not a lush golf course in pristine condition. Rather, it's more like a Scottish links style course, and it's often in rough shape. But they embrace that, and because it's such an usual setup for flat areas like Kansas, it gets a lot of attention. More specifically, they purposefully made the fairways and greens unusually hilly for courses in Kansas. It's understandable why a lot of people don't like it. For example, we've been there many times, and each time we go, somebody in our group always says the photos made it look significantly nicer than it really is. And that's probably a fair statement, especially if you look at their website. (Edit: See 8:13 for a good example of how there is often dead grass all over the fairways and collars. Some will be turned off by this, but others will embrace it as part of the links style setup often seen in places like Europe.)

Just watched this twice. Great job. It would have been nice to spend just a little more time showing the overview sequence of the 9 holes.I'd love to walk the original 9 one day.
Also, I know footage was limited but I really loved the transition from hole 1 to hole 2 starting at 2:31. Would have been cool to have that for each transition.

Really wish all the best courses weren't private or $300+. Really hinders the growth of the game. But I guess if people are still willing to pay to keep people out they will stay that way.
Hey Mark! I agree that it's frustrating that so many great courses are private or expensive. But I don't think it's quite true that *all* the best courses fall into those categories! I'd invite you to check out some content (whether from TFE or from other outlets) on Lawsonia Links, Wild Horse, Rustic Canyon, Charleston Muni, and Diamond Springs. All outstanding courses, all well under $300/round.
@@garrettmorrison1455 completely agree some are less than the $300 price tag but there aren't many. The fact you could name 5 out of the top 100 coure is the problem is all I'm saying. I'm all for a golf trip to any of those courses but it's not feasible for your average player who doesn't live in that area. I'm more talking about getting new players into the game that people willing to travel for golf.
@@trenton5745 no one is saying charge $20 what I'm saying is make them available to play. Run them like courses overseas where they sell public tee times. The exclusivity is what keeps people away from the game. As far as price there is absolutely no reason for a course to be charge $500 for a round. It's only based off status and has nothing to do with the actual course layout.
