    THE STUPENDIUM: / @thestupendium
    CAMI-CAT: / @cami-cat
Cami-Cat and Stupendium decided to take us on a dark deep dive into the mind of Alan Wake, crafting a creepy, foreboding song that seeps into your very soul and asks the question, are we the writer of our own story, or merely a character in it? The attention to detail, as always, is flawless, and Stupes spins a narrative that can only be described as haunting. GO RUN THIS UP!

I've seen a couple of people explain the series already, but I thought I'd just tell you what is necessary for this song in particular.
Alan Wake (suit and tie) is a writer whose wife was, in the first game, kidnapped by a Dark Presence from beneath Cauldron Lake in the town of Bright Falls, Washington. this presence used Alan's writing and the lake's power to make art and dreams (and nightmares) real to free itself from the lake and bring untold destruction. in the end, Alan sacrifices himself to stop it, to free his wife and take her place beneath the lake, but someone else escapes too, a monster with Alan's face, named Mr. Scratch (leather jacket).
13 years later the events of the second game take place, darkness is stirring and people are being murdered by a cult known as The Cult Of The Tree (Deer Masks). FBI agent Saga Anderson is sent to investigate and finds herself the protagonist of Alan's next story, labelled "Return".
The game (and song) is from 2 perspectives. Alan, trapped in The Dark Place Beneath The Lake as he tries to write himself out, and Saga, as she investigates all the craziness from outside and fulfils her role as the story's protagonist.
also it's in a shared universe with Control, if you remember that game! even if you don't, you'll remember the song Stupes did for it, "Slide Into The Void"

Pretty good summary of the story of Alan Wake so far. Can't wait to see what you add to it from the DLCs

If you want a Lets Play from someone who knows all of the lore from the Remedy verse and loves to theorize and put the pieces together I would absolutely recommend watching Gaming Universities playthrough of Alan Wake 2 he streamed his first completely blind playthrough and its up in a playlist on his channel. I am also someone who loves deeply delving into the lore behind the remedy games and I still missed things that Gaming University absolutely caught.

"I don't know if this supposed to be part of the story or part of reality."
    Me: The answer is yes

If you want the story without needing to play the games or watch hours of gameplay, I recommend watching the videos on the it by The Lady of Lore. She also manages to weave it together with the lore from the game Control, which is set in the same universe.

Don't want to give you any explanations on the story of the games (unless you want me to, i can and gladly will, a more or less short but detailed summary of the story of the first game for example), feel free to dive as deep into it as you prefer. But just a bit of context - that "evil" version of Alan is called Mr. Scratch, and when the name comes up in the story it's often covered with some noise over it, "scratching" the word. That's why it was scratched in the lyrics and had some noise over it in the song.
Alan Wake 1 and especially 2 also rely on music quite a lot and involve it into storytelling, and lyrics of every song in the second game (and there are plenty of full songs, not only at the end of every chapter) are directly related to the story. There is one called "Dark, Twisted and Cruel", and it's kind of a theme of Mr. Scratch. You can listen to it in your spare time, it's under three minutes, and it might give you a bit better idea about the character. Though the version of Mr. Scratch represented in that song and Alan Wake 2 in general is a lot more feral and brutal than the one The Stupendium is referring to, which most likely comes from "Alan Wake's American Nightmare", a semi-stand-alone addon to the first game, and it's difficult to say how canon it is. There he was a more suave maniac.
Speaking of music, there is a band called "Poets of the Fall", and the vocalist is a friend of Remedy's lead writer, so you can hear their songs in pretty much every Remedy game, from Max Payne 2 to Alan Wake 2. The band is even represented in the Alan Wake universe, though in the games they are known as Old Gods of Asgard, and only perform the songs, the members of this fictional band are played by different people.
Also, as someone very familiar with Alan Wake series, i admire The Stupendium's commitment to the role and all the little details. The narration in Alan's style in the outro and the imitation of the Night Springs narrator, the deer head imagery, the scratch moment in the lyrics, trying to replicate visual effects of the game, Scratch recording himself for Alan, and so on. They either did their research VERY well, or had help from a fan, or a fan themselves.

most likely researched it themselves, they try to make an effort to know as much as they can about sponsoring games to make sure that the songs are as close to in game as possible

I'm going to be honest here, I wasn't aware that it was possible to _not_ be a fan of DS9. Absolutely awesome show. Don't mess with the Sisko.

And if you want an even deeper delve into it than Lore Dump check his main channel Monty Zander he is literally the reason I played the first Alan Wake game with his Alan Wake Critique. I literally watched a quarter of the video and realized I needed to play it myself that I was going to love it. I'm even one of Monty's patreons because he has gotten me to play multiple games through his videos.

Alan wake spoilers of course You are kind right Alan wake is about a writer who losses his wife to a sort of paranormal being after an argument with her because she brough his type writer to their sort of trip where they Alan planned to grow even closer with his wife but he stayed away from writing because he wanted to take a brake so he gets mad when his wife tries to get him back into it during their chill trip he gets mad leaves the room in anger leaving her behind in a room where "darkness" drags her into a paranormal lake that leads to a alternate world that relflects ouer reality, Alan jumps after her when then he is forced to write a story to free his wife after some evevnts he remains trapped but his wife is free so the second game is just about him trying to write a way back home out of this darkness of reality.
Alan is sort of special since he was inspired by the monsters to write and he put that in his writing, whatever he writes becomes reality but it needs to make logical sense for it to come true the monsters are just part of the being known as the darkness that is a plain evil presence that corrupts his writing and takes upon the form of his worst traits and how the public views him.
So when Alan is trapped that being just terrorizes people with alans face and sort of solidfies people opinion of him as this maniac and killer
