It’s cool to remember too that Billy planned this day as his last. He thought he was going to kill Scott Wood, and then himself, likely from when we see him out of jail for the first time. But Layla is the goat and fixes him
Layla is an angel, but it does require a bit of suspension of disbelief in trying to figure out how she could love him, especially after being kidnapped by him.
Yes, I feel the movie having this dream like aesthetic was meant to create a setting that makes suspending your disbelief easier, the movie doesn't look like reality so it's easier to remove it from reality. I probably should've mentioned that in this video but I will mention Buffalo 66 a lot for my video on The Brown Bunny that I'll make within the next month.
I had a good friend who was a stage actor, I showed him this movie, we both had a blast, and when the movie ends he said something I never forgot: "Now she s going to leave him, because he is no longer the same guy. He s happy."
I always hated how most reviews of this movie were so negative towards Billy and how Layla was more of a manic pixie dream girl. Most think that Layla is some fantasy girl, someone created by the male mind. However I see myself in Layla so increasingly in each scene. Her actions and feelings make so much sense to me. I really love her character, it’s not often you’ll see such a gentle person in media like this. Billy himself is so wonderfully written and played, I’m happy yours differs and sees the movie for what it is. It’s not a Layla movie, it’s one about Billy Brown and his conquest for affections. I really liked your video, I’m so glad I clicked on your profile after you had followed me on Letterboxd. I would guess you’re mostly focused on movie summaries, hence your name, however I would really like to hear more of your analysis and retrospective on the movies!
Thanks! That's great to hear. I try to add as much of a retrospective as I can, I know what you mean though. There is room for more with this video but my video on The Brown Bunny will be more than just a video on the movie, my main focus on this video will be cancel culture and the negative responses to Gallo's films which ultimately started with Buffalo 66, so i do have a lot more to say on Buffalo 66, I'd rather this video stand as an expression of my love for it and a defence of it than say everything I could've said on some aspects of the movie, mainly there is subtext in the film I did not talk much on but this is something that will be focused on with my video on The Brown Bunny for sure as both movies I think get judged by people who are unable to see the deeper meanings. I go through the whole movie like a summary as it gives me the space to branch off onto my own personal takes, some movies I have more to add than others though. I have a Fight Club video in the works that will serve as a very analytical social commentary as well as an overview on the film. You might like my Taxi Driver video if you haven't checked it out already too. Thanks for the feedback, I'm trying to learn from all the responses I get!
I watched buffalo 66 probably 4 months ago for the first time in kind of a watch party setting, had no idea what i was getting into or who vincent gallo even was at the time. After a single viewing i would confidently put it in my top 10. I find the dinner table scenes are some of my favorite (along with the “i drive a cadillac” scene) but the dinner table scenes seem to offer so much. The framing, the acting, the flashbacks are edited in such a way that evokes the same feeling as a memory popping in your head that you can’t avoid. There’s so much to the film but so many of the small editing choices really just made me fall in love with this movie.
@@ljb9983 I mean that she is a young high school girl who was kidnapped by an extremely mentally ill man. You have to keep in mind that the film takes place through Billy’s perspective, so it has a dream like quality to it with a likely unreliable narrator. I would think that if the story was told through Laylas perspective alone, the film would be more of a thriller/horror because of how traumatizing this would be for a young girl. And if her reaction through Billy’s perspective was true, that raises more concerns than not; what is her home life like to where she feels an attachment to an older man who has kidnapped her? What is her mental health background.
@@ljb9983 I absolutely loved this film and the dynamic that Billy and Layla shared, but I also have to acknowledge how dysfunctional it was at its core.
@@ljb9983 my previous comment was deleted, but it’s much deeper than Layla being good and helping a mentally ill man. She was a young high school girl who was kidnapped and verbally and physically assaulted. Not to mention that the film takes place through Billy’s perspective and his alone. The dream like quality coupled with an unreliable narrator makes for a warped point of view.
Great review. Went to subscribe as soon as I finished and saw that I was already subscribed after watching the Taxi Driver review. As for the background music I think it is necessary as the clips from the film mostly have no sound, only your narration so the music makes it more cinematic. Anyway, looking forward to the next one.
@tan89284 just interested in why you relate to her, do you understand why someone like her would accept being kidnapped like that? because people that I know that have seen the film don't seem to believe that that's realistic but I think it is.
I watched this movie for the first time yesterday. The 'exaggeration' you spoke of resonated with me - I felt like each character was a caricature of a real person in my life. I'm a Buffalo native and can confirm that Bills fandom is something else, but I like how it was presented in such a way to be a stand-in for any neglectful parental behavior. I also have a friend who mirrors Billy's backstory, which presents as aggressive outbursts, so I felt a sort of predisposed empathy. Side note: after watching + researching the film, I was surprised to read that this movie achieved cult-following status in Japan, and the main characters were the inspiration of one of my favorite video games, Catherine. I suppose that would be due to the prevalence of loneliness/Hikikomori in their society.
I feel you on relating to the main character, as someone from buffalo I really think that it’s an amazing story. Well done on the video this deserves more attention.

This movie is truly incredible, and i relate to it so much being a lonely child myself. When i was a kid i thought my mom was the devil, and my dad was my hero but that's only because i hated being with my mom so badly that when i would finally be able to see my dad it felt like i was saved but in reality he would just do the bare minimum for me and just left me alone at his house while he went out and sold drugs. now as an adult me and my mom have a good relationship because she has showed me time and time again that she was deeply sorry for how she treated me and as for my dad we unfortunately don't talk anymore because we simply are strangers to eachother and he has never seen where he was wrong. And the fucked thing now is that now that i have kids iv realized im just like him and as a matter of fact just like my mom when i was younger as well. "the worst of both worlds" i like to say, and i hate myself for it. so when Billy Brown looks at himself in a mirror with disgust, i feel that way too deeply.
