I stopped watching many other HAM channels that often focus on selling me stuff I don’t want or getting me excited about stuff I don’t need. I like your channel because it’s a repository of useful information and a community for the criticality minded. Thank you for what you do here. Take care and 73.
Excellent recommendations. Good to note that a stubby doesn't give you much range. I think quite a few new hams expect a stubby antenna is going to be as effective as a whip.
I use this exact combination on my FT-70. I set the HT to lowest TX power then use it for talking into my digital hotspots and my VHF/UHF crossband base radio. Since the stubby is compromised for long distance communication the crossband radio allows me to get a lot of range with the HT and since I’m TXing low power I also get better battery life. Another benefit is I don’t have to sit at the radio to monitor it and pickup the hand mic to talk. I can be anywhere around my property and talk back to a hotspot or crossband with ease, all while using low power and not carrying a radio with a tall antenna. It’s a very convenient combination.
My TD-H3 came with the standard antenna plus a TD-771 whip antenna. I use it for GMRS and Airband monitoring.
The longer antenna that came with my H3 is specifically for airband.
I have a 771 and a Signal Stick. The 771 works very well on my TD-H3. Great video.
My Nagoya 771 seems to work better than my signal stick for reception. Love the idea of the signal stick just wish it worked as good atleast to my NA 771
i had a male SMA antenna which really wanted to play with my radio, so i bought an adapter to turn it into a female SMA antenna. Everyone on the net is happy about my new antenna.
“Most of them don’t know what they’re talking about and in some cases I don’t either” is now my credo.
Thanks for this! I got around to testing this setup with the ABBREE AR 805 S stubby. So far Im pleased with it. I have yet to test reception at the extreme edges of the 50 acres (lowest power setting) but I will. BTW the squelch tail thing was not an issue for me. I have other radios that do the same thing. Actually I never gave it a thought. Looking forward to the next one.
which one is best for airband
I ordered the Diamond RH3 & adapter for my FT4XR just out of curiosity really. But as for other "snub nosed" antennas go, I'm a firm believer & user of Smiley Antennas. I have the 2 inch tuned for 465 mhz (GMRS) and can qso a ham repeater some 18-20 nautical miles away. For VHF I have a Smiley 3 inch tuned for 160 and it gets me through. Unfortunately they don't make any "dual band" antennas. But I don't have any problem carrying one or the other in my pocket. 73
Great recommendation on the stubbies which I would only use to connect to my AllStar node.
Very interesting comments, thank you for sharing. My question is about attaching a car-mount antenna such as having a window or mag mount then connecting to the TD H3 for in-car use. Maybe such a setup is not possible.
I’ve had much better luck with actual 1/4 wave flexible whips on HTs than any of the coiled up ones mentioned. Physics can’t be fooled.
Try a Comet SMA24J on it. That’s what I have. It fits well and will give you much better range on both TX and RX.
Thanks, Scott. Great covert "party radio" conbo! 😊
I liked the H3 so much that I bought another one. They're tiny and feature rich.🤠🇦🇺⁷³
N00b here with probably a dumb question, but are antennas for these radios selected differently for GMRS and/or HAM?
Would your best choice antenna for the TD-H3 work the same on a UV5G+?
Nagoya has one specific to GMRS. It’s the NA-771G. NA-771 is for Ham
I have the TD-H8 and the 8 watt UV5R and the NA-771G works fine.
You will have to change them out though depending on what frequencies your listening/transmitting on.
@@careybrown3776 Thanks. I am having issues with both H3s not having much in the way of tx/rx distances with a lot of static, whereas the UV5g+ and Retevis NR30 perform fantastic here at our ranch...both are clear 8-12 miles where the H3s barely make it 1/2 mile....kinda disappointed in the H3s at the moment
I just bought a pair of these and it came with two sets of antennas. The first is similar to what you show, 6", and a second set of 15" antennas labeled VHF Airband, TD-771. Does this mean they're supplying a better antenna now, or do I still need your recommendation?
Hi sir when you do more show on tidradio TD-H3 on Diamond RH3?
Hello
I'm wondering what the correct power levels should be on the different bands on this radio. 🤔
Good information, sir. I've got two TD-H3's and have been doing some antenna swapping trying to find a useable alternative to the included factory antenna, which are dismal in my opinion. I know that SWR's don't tell the whole story, but just relating my experience. I've tried both the NA-701 and NA-711 and both seem capable of hitting local repeaters consistently, but both with less-than-stellar SWR's - useable, mind you, (and far better than the factory antenna) but could be better.
In fact, thus far, the antenna I pulled off an old Baofeng BF-F8HP gives *by far* the best balance of tx/receive performance and SWR reading. Go figure. I've purchased a couple of Baofeng replacement antennas and hope they'll perform as well. Supposed to be here today, so we'll see, though I remain highly skeptical, as consistency of production in these products seems to sketchy at best.
As always, thanks much for sharing.
Steve
I tried the H3 but the high power of 3.75 watts just didn't cut it. I then got an H8 and tried the Nagoya 701. It does not transmit as far as the stock Tidradio H8 antenna. The Abbree 771 is better than the Nagoya 771, but the Comet SMA-24J dominates over the Nagoya and Abbree. Forget about SWR, do a range test with all the antennas.
Hello
Where can I get the correct Black Antenna RF Adapter SMA Female to BNC Female converter I the uk ?
does it have a specific description, I can't find it and the same for the diamond antennas, I don't want a fake one, please.
I'm relatively new to this stuff also and I hope I can make my licence next year. 🤗
I think I would than from the beginning use this adapter sma to BNC and buy only BNC versions of the antennas, would that not be better and eliminate this wonky antenna connector problem. 🤔 🤗
Are you talking about a TIDRADIO TD-H3 GMRS Radio or TIDRADIO TD-H3 Ham Radio? Do they have different antennas?
My H3 came with 2 antennas. The longer one is for aircraft band.
From what I understand, yes. You will want one for grms and one for ham. I don’t really know as I put a Nagoya grms antenna on mine. 🤷♂️
The TD-H3 has 3 modes 1. GMRS 2. HAM 3. Normal (unlocked).. Amazon has confusing marketing options, but ALL TD-H3 have these options... The TD-H3 is able to have multiple bands. NA 701 has a different antenna for different ranges so pay attention to the listing and the frequencies 701G is their GMRS band. 701C is for MURS and 701 is HAM/Amateur band... Consider the TD-771 antenna for better simplicity and not having to swap antennas as frequently.
I have a Signal Stick and a Diamond RH-77. The Signal Stick seems to receive better (a couple points higher on the S-meter), while the Diamond seems to transmit better (based on hitting repeaters the SS can’t). Has anybody else noticed this?
This is seen in a lot of antennas on all bands. I'm guessing in this case it's ground or lack thereof. Try a tiger tail and see if the performance isn't a lot more similar to each other & better than either without it.
Hello,
how good is the tidradio stubby antenna that looks identic like your recommendation in this video but tidradio branded?
I have read some about them and a video somewhere they say it's not so bad, I have bought a couple becourse they are in the moment for sale and I got over from funkwelle yt chanel a link that got me even more discount, I'm a beginner and looking for good budget stuff, have to wait up to 4weeks delivery becourse of extra batterys they saying on ther side. Hope everything arrives OK and is working properly.
Nice review, can the 701 be used on my TD-H8? Or could you recommend an equivalent antenna, thanks
Hi wording im have tidradio h3 Just want ask Diamond RH3 any good?
Which one is tuned for GMRS? with the stock Antenna I can not hit a local GMRS repeater with this radio, my KG-935G Will thank you for the reviews and information.
N701G or 771G , G for GMRS tuned
Been using the Diamond RFH10 antenna and it works pretty well on the H3. The stock antenna like you said is mediocre at best. Straight into the dumpster where it belongs.
Hi. Thank you for your video. Can you clarify for me please. Is the radio or the antenna SMA male?
SMA male on the radio side, female on the antenna side.
@@KS6DAYThank you! 73’s
I bought two Stubbys (Diamond) from AliExpress, Very unimpressed by them.
Neither could hear nor transmit to a repeater just under 2 miles away. 🧐
I literally just sent a message to Tidradio about their antenna options. They always offer their 771 clone but never the 701. I told them I would opt for no stock antenna and both the 701/771. They informed they don’t sell the 701. I was like I know, That’s the issue LOL. I mean, everyone upgrades antennas right off the bat. Why not sell them instead of letting the other guy make the money.
Great info here, thanks!
The signal stuff signal stick works amazing on this radio but a bit unwieldy.
I already have a Comet SMA 501 that I want to use on mine...so the adapter I need is SMA FEMALE TO SMA FEMALE, right?
An adapter that has a female SMA on both ends should do the trick Since the radio and antenna each have male SMA ends.
Good video and have been wondering about antennas for this radio. Has anyone used a Nagoya Na-F30 30 inch Tactical Foldable Antenna for this radio? GMRS? I have a short one and a long antenna that came with but wanting to know if the one mentioned above would be better thx
Does the GMRS radios require a license to transmit legally?
Yes. There is no test. The license fee is $35. Your callsign can be used by you as well as all of your family members, except for cousins.
I applied and paid my $35. Have a Frn number, but no Call sign. How do I get that?
@@Nickxnack i did the same few days ago still have not got my call sign still waiting for the email from the FCC
@@MH-5274 Hopefully we get them soon. 🤞
Anything yet?
hello sir, how about retevis 701 rubber ducky do you also recomend? im your new subscriber from philippines 🇵🇭
I have Retevis 701 and 771 antennas and I think they work well.
I got a whip with my TD-H3….does that manufacturer make a whip ?
The Nagoya NA-771. Here's a link to the vendor on Amazon where I've bought a few of them. They were all genuine and work very well. www.amazon.com/Authentic-NA-771-15-6-Inch-SMA-Female-BTECH/dp/B00KC4PWQQ/ref=sr_1_2?crid=13AI7XTPSHCT7&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.ouIhOk45DZpdAGxjNx9MhUuXnWZJHiNHC22tuLJV_Qc1VjQeJmI9xlyDNZWQ-7U6kRrvYBiZBfA47eCGXH4qyZnXav9HtJYhio9nBA2ubwEW6SCfNJCFiSDeyWP0m8IheJKDnSVhCy-9OML08o68nHzVrTgdvYkHHWMHktl4V1Gm_FnDgrKKhZe1Su44WqY-ixfLfNAvKmLx3s-ZAEsRSdW2j7c8s-BRJTzXHjmz2Zk.fv-N--oBF8Jn4A-tXbzIP1-2-muhto87KiVyvQbfSiw&dib_tag=se&keywords=nagoya+na-771&qid=1717605471&sprefix=nagoya+na-771%2Caps%2C148&sr=8-2
@@KS6DAY got one coming. Thank you !!
Thanks for the video.
Very helpful video..
Nice job... Thnx 👍
I have a draw full of factory HT antennas...haha
Thanks'73
All due respect the Diamond RH3 bullet antenna is by far the worst antenna you could have ever recommended on your channel,Unless I received a defective antenna because I can’t pick up anything, not even local traffic.
I would suspect that you have a defective antenna. My RH3 is very good on receive.
What would you say the range of the diamond RH3 is?
This radio, TD-H3, is hyped junk. It has too many problems and bricks too often. Wasted time when there's many better radios. Thanks for providing a place to give my experience and opinion.
Is this your own experience, because I haven't had any problems so far. Had my h3 from the release. I think it is good value for money. Got it for 25$.
@@Rast7 yours must not have had that horrible tail squelch it's known for. Luckily they offered a firmware update meant to fix a bunch of issues like that. Unfortunately it bricked my radio, so yep, my experience. Update doesn't brick all the radios so there's that.
For the price point. It deserves the hype.
Yet you don’t mention a better option! Meh
Please quit saying your call phonetically. It’s painfully annoying
So is your whining..

@@stevecoggins3401 Well observed. Got a good laugh off of that one.
