I was there in Pattaya that Christmas for my first trip to Thailand at 24 years old. I stayed in Siam Bayshore. Fell in love with the place and kept going back. This really brings back memories of when it was much nicer than it is now. Progress. Thanks for the memory.
Me too Siam Bayshore when I first visited 2002. Then name change Siam Bayview :) Still visiting (Garden Wing Pool View )!
We were also there Xmas/ NewYear 1979! Stayed at The Royal Cliff, 1 building which stood on its own, nothing around it. I remember the Siam Bayshore & The Orchid Lodge. Walking Street was just gravel, no in your face sextrade. Wonderful.

What's wrong with Pattaya today?
@@troylollysaf9311. Its just different in several ways now. Back then, with no Internet, no mobile phones, no satellite TV, the people came from rural areas and were unspoilt, open, less money driven, nicer. It was smaller and newer, and the general atmosphere was more relaxed. Cheaper. Much cheaper. More exotic. Less concrete. No screaching girls outside bars grabbing at you. Inside the bars, girls had a more relaxed manner and 'appeared' more interested in the western visitor. I know that deep down they were just working for money but it wasn't so obvious. Far less scamming. It was only the first year of mass tourism. Up until then the visitors were mainly businessmen or back packers. No old sexpats in vests moaning. If you go now you don't know any different and so you're happy as it is..
I was in Pattaya 1977, Ocean View Hotel, it was my first time in Thailand, 27 years old.
This video wake up my memories and I recognice the little girl with hat, she was selling
coca cola and bears at the beach.

I was 16 in 1979 but I was lucky enough to go to Pattaya in 1989 when I was 26. Oh how I loved the place. Sadly it has changed so much. I'll be out again in July for my 35th trip. It really might be my last this time. Thanks for posting this. It signifies the early days of a wonderful adventure so many western men. Will the world ever see a place as fantastic in the way Pattaya used to be again?
I doubt it Mister and you are right it was truly wonderful back then, compared to the cold, mercenary place it can feel like today. March 90 was my first trip. First couple of days the place freaked me out with the culture shock, but 10 days later I was fighting back the tears when it was time to go home. Wonderful memories.
Agreed. I actually went back in August 1990 on my way to Australia, so we might have drank in the same bar!. It was much more laid back then before mass tourism.
Yes I agree I went to pattaya from 1986 to 2018 it was the most wonderful place on earth but unfortunately it started turning and I have stopped going don’t like anything about anymore
Agree with all the comments, 1988 1st time, and every year since (sometimes twice a year).
It was an unbelievable place then, heaven on earth for a divorced 26 years old boy. The girls were all smiles and fun, nowadays seem cold and calculating. Oh well guys, at least we have those great memories
@@stevieboy5263 Wow, that's a long time span. So you've witnessed huge changes. I was a 'johnny come lately' at 38 yrs of age in Feb '07. I was totally blown away by its indulgence, so returned 8-9 time's until 2016. Even I noticed the change , particularly the arrogance, rudeness and expectance of the girl's. For me things changed around 2012.
I was 20 in the 1979 and staying with my colleagues at the Siam Bay Shore Hotel in Pattaya, it was a new hotel during that time, amazing experience !

I am a young man from Russia, I am only 30 years old. I have been to Pattaya 2 times, this year and last year and fell in love with this place. I deliberately searched for old images of this beautiful place and I am very surprised to see that in 1979 tourism was so developed. It much has changed in Thailand and around the world over the years, but it seems to me that Thailand and the appearance of Thai women are still more conservative than in Russia, the United States and Europe. In Thailand, to this day, you can feel something from the past, even despite the progress. Maybe it's because they are kinder than we are, or because they keep their trappings better. Do you agree? I really liked this nostalgic video.
Я тоже из России, первый визит в Паттаю 2001 году в 31 год. Прилетел из Москвы. Тоже захотел найти видео из старых архивов. Приезжаю каждый год, кроме конечно этого. Пока пауза из-за ковида, но увер скоро полечу! Конечно идут изменения паттая растет. Даже по сравнению с 2001 годом коллосальные изменения! А чего говорить на счет 1979! Тогда это было практически начало.
@@user-od3bd8gn2p все меняется, но даже в 70е годы Паттайя уже жила, курорты, отели, девочки. Если посмотреть видео из конца 80х то уже движуха там конкретная и машины дорогие стоят, катера, бары кафешки ) Я ещё не родился а Паттайя уже жила. Очень культовое место, два раза там был. Атмосфера супер)

Must agree, my first visit to Thailand was Phuket early 1998, it was way better than in June 2018 when i went back the heart and soul of the town was gone

1978,stayed at Asia Pattaya ended up marrying a girl that worked there.We are still together but spend most of our time in Chiangrai.Pattaya only had two roads the beach and one behind,the best restaurant was Nang Nual.

Thank you for sharing this amazing film!😃 It's great to look back and compare locations to how they appear today. I love the charm of Beach Road. Pity we can't identify some of the small Sois. In 1979, I guess 2nd Rd was almost a dirt track and nothing else beyond, inland, except fields???

Interesting to watch these old amateur films. It's shot about 50 years ago and makes me wonder what, if any, progress has been made in the local tourism industry. Same activities today, different people.

Damn, I’m 22 years old. I went to Pattaya for a month for the first time. Prices and everything were not as cheap as I thought. After seeing the comments from the elders in the comment area, I can imagine what Pattaya was like at that time. Ya is so beautiful,
i went in 2022 summer for three months. food and hotels are still affordable. i also bought a condo near the beach for 26k there.

What about The Regent Hotel? Does it still exist? What its name today. Can't find much information about it.
First name was The Regent
after was changed to Montien Hotel Pattaya
approx in 2015 was changed to Imperial
now closed for renovation

This was a visit from Austria, not from Germany. I have a view questions: Did they have at Christmas 1979 television sets in the room? If so did they have news in English language? Did the have European plug ins for electricity? What time around did the shops close in the evening?

I think this is older than 1979 because the Datsun pickup was a very old model it is more likely to be early 1970s

Looks boring. I prefer the Pattaya of today. Interestingly they had para sailing and jet skis back then. Lovely video though.
Lived there in this time, used to stay in weekender hotel, had friends who stayed at Orchid Lodge, Nipa Lodge which had Cu Cu club for dancing, spent 5 years there! I've forgotten about much of the names, but never the good times, what a ride and rush! Beautiful ❤️ girls and friendly people.
