    Schönes Video, die gute alte Zeit. Ich war das erste mal in Pattya in 1975. Marine Bar war
    schon damals der beste Platz am Abend. Lebe heute seit 31 Jahren in Bangkok.

    Wow, I was there for my 20+ visit in 1987. Brings back so many memories. I stayed in a small hotel called the Wandee Inn (now called Windy Inn and it's right up the northern end nearly at the siam bayshore)) which was run by a retired US marine and his lovely Thai wife. Soy Diamond with bars like the Chiquita, Suzi Wong and the Carousel were my favourite haunts and the source of most of my 'girlfriends' over the years.
    Mostly Aussies, Poms, Germans, Swiss and a sprinkling of arabs. Gee it was a laid back place back then. Was there first in 1979 and it was the only place to hang out for expats like me. Thanks for bringing so many great memories back and it saddens me to hear of how things have progressed there. Won't be going back even though I'm retired now. Drinking and rooting have lost their appeal and my pursuits are now somewhat more cerebral. Ah the memories though .......

      The definitive post. It was certainly worth visiting then. My first time in Pattaya was in early '93, although I first went to Thailand in '87. Now Pattaya is a dreadful place.

    First went in 1990 and had the time of my life before all the mass tourism started. Its still worth a visit now but it is a cold, mercenary place compared to what it used to be. I would say around 2005 was the tipping point downwards.
    If only we had a time machine!

      That seems right about the time they put that McDonalds right in the middle of Walking Street...and I predicted that was the beginning of the end of that scene. Now it's just Middle Eastern couples eating ice cream cones and Chinese package groups. I still go to Pattaya every few years, but I don't think I've been to Walking Street since at least 2009.

      My 1st port of call in SE Asia was the Philippines at the start of 2000. Didn't visit Pattaya until Feb '07 and instantly regretted not going sooner. But even I noticed a distinct change by 2012 after another 6-7 visits. Arrogance, rudeness and blatant disrespect had crept in to the bargirls psyche's. Haven't returned since 2016 and can only assume that it's getting progressively worse.

      I'd say before then. I had the time of my life in Pattaya in 1987, but when I returned in 1992 it was a completely different place. I couldn't find any of my old haunts and all the girls looked miserable and jaded. All I kept hearing all the time was, "Everyone's gone to Phuket." So that's where I went. Patong Beach was an amazing place in 1992 (better than Pattaya in 1987) but on my next visit to Phuket in 1996 it had gone exactly the same way. Completely overdeveloped, tacky and tourists everywhere. It's amazing how quickly these places get ruined. Let me know when you invent that time machine!

      @@LearnToReadThai A guy I once knew in Pattaya went to Phuket from Pattaya for a change of scenery and he took enough cash that he felt comparing it to Pattaya, should last him 2 weeks. He was back in Pattaya in less than a week! He claimed that everything was 3x the cost. I've never been there. Closest I've been is Krabi, Trang and Koh Phi Phi.

      @@manosparavida3551 When was this? Phuket is very expensive now, but this was back in 1992 and I don't recall being shocked by high prices at the time.

    In 1973 this was basically a fishing village and family friendly. Pattaya seawater was clean then. Lived in BKK from '82 to '86 and drove there frequently for long weekends -- still nice, clean water for swimming at Jomtien Beach, a few miles south, but by '86 Jomtien water was quite filthy. Recognized a couple of friendly faces in this video, toward the end, so despite the awful quality, was worth the price of admission. Pattaya is a different place now. Glad to have known the place 'back in the day' when we did. The environment (and attitudes) do not seem pleasant anymore. Think the hotels we used then were usually the Saeng Kaew and City View.

      Agree entirely, first visited Oct 88 and came back every year sometimes 2 or 3 times. Finally retired here in 1999 aged 50. I think your right about the year 2000 being the start of the change. But from about 2010 it has declined sharply as a FUN place. Still great place to live though, if away from the centre of town.

    was there in 1988 the open air beer bars were a hoot and rooms for 200 baht and you can guess the rest on prices

    • @stevenrainer6882
      @stevenrainer6882 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      200 baht seems a lot to me. I actually think rooms have become cheaper since then when accounting for inflation, decent aircon, much greater comfort and quality of the rooms and infrastructure such as gym, pool etc. Beer was definitely cheaper then though.
