Great review Joshua. I purchased the Venn 2.0 for alto and found it to be quite strong...but I then learned that I was shipped a 1st Generation Venn. I contacted D'Addario and they sent me a new, 2nd Generation Venn reed free of charge. Their customer service support was OUTSTANDING. I will be trying out my new reeds tomorrow. Wish me luck...
@@heaneymusic To me, the Legere cases are designed for the maker's benefit, NOT the players. I echo your thoughts on the difficulty of getting reeds out.
Nice comparison- A lot of these synthetic reeds struggle to create a solid core sound. They either have a high frequency or a low frequency but never that nice sweet combination that includes the midrange that cane reeds produce
I have tried almost all synthetic reeds, legere signature works best for me. Venn's are hard to play soft, lower register is difficult. Even size 2 feels like 2,5 of legeres. They feel like bari synthetic reeds in terms of difficulty of playing and sound. Sound (bright like american cut leger) and feeling (very close to cane) is amazing however they are not for me in terms of playing difficulty. Signature's are just sounding better to me (i like darker and softer airy sound) and they are easy to play soft (even low notes). Thanks for the video, great review.
Thanks for the review, Joshua. When D'Addario released the first edition of Venn reeds, I jumped aboard. But it didn't take long before I jumped right back off. They just didn't perform as well as I'd hoped, and I found those little fibers quite irritating. I switched to Legere reeds and have been quite happy with them, with one or two minor nitpicks. One of my issues with Legere is that they're transparent. It can be hell trying to align a transparent reed on a silver mouthpiece, especially in a poorly lit environment. And although they play very well, I still miss the "reedy" quality of cane. Thanks to your review, I'll definitely give Venn 2.0 a try. Cheers!
I've been playing Legere exclusively since 2013, and you absolutely can sand and scrape them. You just can't scrape/sand from the tip towards the heart, but only the other direction.
I liked the legato sound on the Venn, but it seemed unresponsive on the fast passages. You're articulating a lot faster and cleaner (on the Legere anyway) than I can though so I might try the Venn.
interesting video!.......i thinking i would be willing to try the silverstein ambipoly reed first since im kinda fed up with those american cut legeres only to have them crack and die within 3 to 4 weeks! if they dont work out, ill try the venn!
I am super curious about these!! Fibracell has been my go to but.....I had 2 brand new 5's (they play like cane 2Medium or 3Soft for me) the laminate on the bottom bubble up on both within a couple weeks making a parachute lol....and stopping the air dead. On two gigs. Lol. Went back to Rico Orange Box 3. These seem weirdly Fibracell like....hmmm....
I'm starting to get into synthetic reeds and I enjoy the Venn more than Legere. However, I've only tried the Legere American cut which has a buzz i do not like and haven't tried the Signature, so the signature might be more for me even though I'm not a classical saxophonist but a hobbyist jazz saxophonist
The best video comparing reeds I’ve seen so far. Excellent work. Brilliant stuff

How can you tell the difference between the first gen and 2nd gen?? It doesn’t say on package or anything?
I just started using and am very pleased with the sound. I used one in an out door concert and it sounded great through a massive PA system.
Really helpful review. Many thanks.
Cool video, thanks for posting. The comment about the Legere “coffin” case had to be the strangest knock on Legere (my preferred reed) I’ve heard!
Seriously not a fan of the new case!

Thanks for watching!

I tried a Venn reed and my opinion is that they suck.
For me the best synthetic reed ever.....🙏🌿🪵👍
