Wahoo BOLT V2/2021: 9 New Things To Know!

  • It’s been four years since the original Wahoo BOLT was announced, which was arguably Wahoo’s most important bike computer in terms of shifting consumers towards their offerings. Designed to be small and easy to use, it garnered many fans. However, it lacked full onboard routable maps, as well as a color screen. Wahoo then fixed that with the Wahoo ROAM two years ago, albeit in a larger and pricier form factor.
But now, the world is righted again, and the new Wahoo BOLT (it doesn’t have any different name) includes a full color screen, full maps, and basically, is a mini Wahoo ROAM. All for $279USD (compared to the ROAM’s $379). There are almost no new unique features that the ROAM didn’t have previously, so if you wanted a cheaper/smaller ROAM, then this is likely for you. Whereas if you were looking for new advanced features from Wahoo, this release doesn’t provide that.
Nonetheless, the unit is just as full-featured as that ROAM (actually, more full featured). It’s got full ANT+ & Bluetooth Sensor support, GPS/Galileo/GLONASS connectivity, structured workout support, turn by turn navigation, live tracking, the ability to make Star Wars icons for approaching cars with Varia radar, and phone/text integration. It’s also got one hardware feature the Wahoo ROAM doesn’t: USB-C charging. Yes folks: We finally got the USB-C!

Rouven. I have the element bolt v2 purchased about 5 months ago. For the past 2 rides I’ve had excessive elevation gain (10,330 on flat road!!!Normally these 2 routes are under 500 feet. Only thing I have is that the wind can cause this issue. I’m new to this cycling thing so I know I don’t do 10k feet. What can I do. Is it damaged? Or any updates Is this normal?

@@jrtarmac2497 I've experienced that on the V1 Bolt as well. I think they are using the barometer and that is tricked by the pressure drop. Since the maps/routes are supposed to have elevation data, maybe they could fix that in software.

Ive spent the evening watching all the different reviews available and none have mentioned the issues Ray encountered. Most have only had their hands on it for 24h or 1 week tops. Thanks for the real insight and value add Ray.

Thanks Michael! To be fair to others, the issues I saw seem heavily dependent on living in Amsterdam - and more specifically, the incredibly high density of bike paths and bike infrastructure here that basically killed the routing engine (and in turn, brought down the entire unit). I got a firmware fix I'm testing now to try and resolve the issues. So far, so good.

    • @supersixmikeohimod

@@Dcrainmaker Its a fair point that they probably didn't test it in an options-dense environment like Amsterdam, but your extensive testing protocols did reveal a flaw that will doubtless save a lot of cyclists some headaches. Lets be honest, it's a bit silly that the system got overwhelmed and shut down in the first place. Amsterdam is definitely one of the cycling havens but I'm sure the bug could be replicated in other major cities around the world. TBF I am a big fan of Wahoo products even if they sometimes ship a bit buggy, they do seem like they care about users and patch things up as quickly as possible. You should definitely get some consulting credit or gigs on the side ;) All the best and keep up the great work.

I just bought the Bolt v2 based on several friends' recommendations. I used it for the first time near Amsterdam, and I was off route for a few KM before I received a notification. I have one too and used it for 2 trips. Both times the route/chevrons would dissapear at certain points. Then I need to either wait or choose a direction (mostly the wrong one), before it starts showing the route again. With the previous bolt the route was always there. It’s like now it only shows certain parts of the route and when you reach the end of that part it, it needs to load the next part of the route?

The issue was when you reached the end of a recalculated bleu chevron line, it took a few seconds before the normal black chevrons would re-appear. However, there's a solid black line visible where the black chevrons will appear. So you can still see the original route. I didn't pay attention to that in the beginning. Been using my Bolt2 for 5 months and all is good except for a poor functioning auto-pause. I rode with my 530 Garmin, The Bolt2 and Strava I-phone for the same ride and got 25.4 kph ave for th Garmin and Strava and 23.4 kph ave for the Bolt over exactly the same distance. I reckon it's all down to the Bolt's delay when stopping plus re-starting the ride when walking the bike or going extra slow. An easy fix for Wahoo is to allow us to set a min speed for resumption of the ride e.g. 8 kph. When I told Wahoo about this recently I was told " it's all due to GPS variations". They weren't interested. I know Strava will recalculate the ave speed on my rides so I don't care all that much, but the Bolt should get this relatively correct.

@Ben & Cyn I also have a 520 and ready to upgrade. Curious your reasons for moving to Wahoo vs going with the Edge 530? I’m on the fence between the two. Biggest gripe with Garmin is the occasional need to re-pair BTE with my iPhone. If Wahoo can solve that I’m a switcher.

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@craigthomasutube I have used 520 since 2016 and now I ordered new Bolt (still waiting for delivery). Although 520 has been good device, I also have Forerunner 645 for other sports (mostly running) and I don't like Garmin not updating FR645 at all (compared to cheaper 245). @ Since getting an Apple Watch I stopped using running watches. But I don’t put much stock in my running these days anyway. The 530 has actually be great. 3 weeks in and syncs are smooth. The features continue to amaze me, such a jump from my 520. Climb pro, Strava segments and just the data that comes into Garmin Connect are super interesting. Most people complain about the setup of the all Edge bike computers. I finally “get it” and even though I know Wahoo is much simpler, once Garmin is setup it’s the features that keep me in the ecosystem. I hear you though, it’s no fun when they ghost the older models.

During import - TR and Strava are always higher (I assume correctly) but the device and app will show that. Is the answer to just not display AVG power workout - do you know why, it is different - the 530 and SRM PC8 numbers aren't low and they also have the exact same delay from the pedals from a stop?

Refreshing to have an indepth honest review. All the other sites (except for Desfit/GPLama perhaps) just ran down the marketing literature and then did a glorified unboxing. What is the point of all of those reviews if the information content is literally zero ? I am a tad surprised that the engineers over in Atlanta did not fix those issues a few days ago, as they should be able to simulate the map density by injecting fake GPS coordinate at the workbench ... so that kind of sounds a tad odd to me, but then again, identifying an issue and properly fixing it are separate things. Looking at Desfit's review, who roams just a few miles up the road, it seems in the US we might be just fine. Big shoutout to Ray for testing this stuff in miserable weather. Why ? Because guess what, the route navigation in a downpour is where I need this bike computer over a cellphone that may or may not be water proof, and may or may not respond to my fingers on a touchscreen.

Like many of us I have multiple bikes... single speed, MTB, gravel bike. Does the new bolt allow you to track which bike/equipment you used on each ride? At end of year would like to know how much mileage I put on each individual bike.

Biggest issue I have with the Bolt v2 is delayed navigation cues... when coming up to a turn, its anywhere from 50-100' off. I'm already in the turn and its still suggesting the turn is 30-40' ahead. In the same scenario, my iPhone is only delay 25'.

How is the offroad tracking? The original Bolt was constantly complaining I'm off the track (that was recorded by the same unit) when riding tight switchbacks and twisty single track on speed. It just couldn't keep up, lose GPS accuracy and the range for the off track warning was smaller than the GPS accuracy.
No such issues with 830, I suspect it uses the gyro/accelerometer and the compass to compliment the GPS for better accuracy and path tracking. Though 830 has tons of other issues, mainly Garmin forcing on us features that nobody wants and nobody uses!

For someone who doesn't have a power meter and only uses HR data with forerunner 230 for Cycling, I want to either get the bolt or the edge 530(plus/540?), I find that Garmin Connect offers something that Wahoo doesn't (I can't view my HR info in detail on Strava without Premium), which makes me lean more toward the edge. But in a perfect world I think I'd pick up the Bolt. I love it's simplicity.

@Ali - I recently got the Bolt2 and after a 12hr ride I had 20% power remaining, so Wahoos claim of 15 hrs for Bolt2 seems about right. I had connected Varia radar, heart rate monitor, and power meter/cadence all over ANT+. Also had the screen backlight set to “5 sec” (outside in daylight the screen backlight is not needed, visibility is very good without it).

We are a year later now, my Elemnt did navigate me on blurred map. "loading" icon remained on the screen for the entire trip, I was seriously dependent on the navigation by this time and was freaking annoying. That was one time in a month but I tried to get home from a place I've never been to. Hopefully bugs are not daily anymore but I feel every update fixes one and brings a new issue. I love that device as long as it not getting any more frequent.

I just tried this a couple days ago with my v1 bolt with the latest firmware a couple days ago. Appears to ignore power meter and just go with trainer readings when doing an erg structured workout. So no “power match” as far as I can tell. Having said that, the user interface doing structured workouts on the bolt is very nicely done.

Anyone with the new BOLT and Assioma Duo pedals can check/confirm if Wahoo maybe fixed the total work done during the workout (i.e. total kJ output)? Up until recently, with Assioma Duo, BOLT was miscalculating total kJ (i.e. 1 hour workout with avg power 150 W would show like 405 kJ instead of 540 kJ (1 hr = 3600 s * 150 W = 540 kJ) - it regularly showed 25% less than it should). Wahoo aknowledged this bug through a support ticket but didn't fix it. It was one of the reasons I changed to Hammerhead computer. But maybe they fixed that finally?
Note it happened only with Assioma Duo pedals (earlier I used bePro single sided pedals and all worked great)
