Woooow. Not a single person thanked him for his work so I’ll do it. Jim you did a badass job. Love the tackle set up !! Great work ! Thank you on behalf of the TH-cam community
One of the reasons I love this channel, Matts letting the pregnant females go to ensure more Ling get born. Been watching a bunch of other Bay Area fishing TH-cam channels and they're taking pregnant females, when they gut the Ling you can see the roe being treated as byproduct. Happy New Year Matts!
That sounds logical to most people at first, but it is actually far more detrimental to future populations take males out than females. Females will lay once, thousands of eggs, But the males fertilize multiple times, multiple thousands, instead of just once. And it is the males that guard the nests, you take the male out of the picture and some females may not get fertilized, and once they lay the eggs there is nothing to guard the nest. Leaving those eggs (and future populations) wide open to being eaten by anything that swims or crawls by. This is why most regulations do not limit what sex can be taken. Populations are well enough that they do not have to be picky ;)
@@nintendude1988 It doesn't just sound logical. It IS logical. Perhaps you're a younger fisherman but I remember a time when Ling numbers were so low because of severe over fishing. Preservation of a species is directly tied to ensuring there are healthy females capable of producing eggs. It takes female Ling a longer period to reach sexual maturation vs. their male counterparts. This means younger male Lings are ready to partake is reproduction faster than female Lings. In addition to reaching sexual maturity in a shorter duration male Lings are higher in numbers vs. female Ling. So, the idea that taking a female ling is preferable to taking a male Ling is rather uninformed.
@@chinaskibukowski7747 I fished all through the ling closure of the early 2000s, I remember it well. But it's been proven plenty of times here in Oregon that the over harvest of males directly related to the decline last time. It was because people targeted males specifically thinking it was better than targeting females that lead to overfishing of them and the decline in population. Females and Males mature virtually around the same time (only a year difference and 4" difference) so that argument doesn't make much sense. If it was important to leave the females be there would be a slot limit ensuring people would not keep the big females.
Keeping either sex of lingcod during mating season should probably be avoided. The Male lingcod guards the eggs, and if they are removed from their nest the entire batch of eggs will not survive. Females leave the spawning site immediately after spawning, so if you did catch a ling full of eggs it most likely hasn't had the chance to spawn, also bad. It would be best to target other species during the breeding periods or females that have laid their eggs. I think that's Matt's reasoning for letting the lingcod go, it hadn't laid its eggs yet.
Hi Matts- I’m driving down from Palm Springs on Jan 11th-16. I hope to get to meet you. I’m 55 and you got this single mom back ocean fishing and lobstering. Now I’ve taught my 15 y/o son and we share quality time fishing together. Mom and son time has become so loving. I’d like to see if I can buy two long sleeves from you so we could show your channel love out here. Thank you and Bless you and your family🙏🏽🎄🌊🦐🦞🐟🐟🐟💕
Had Singapore chili crab in Singapore and I've missed it. I've got some dungies I picked up a couple weeks ago out of SF and I'm definitely gonna try Calvin's recipe. Also, props on pulling nice ling with that spoon and double props for letting the pregnant female go!
For few year's now my love n i watch these videos n outdoor chef life because it's so satisfying n perfect each time. Makes us want to go fishing n cook real good meals n it's so pretty to sit the sea and fishes to.
I highly respect matt for releasing the fish if he thinks they are pregnant or knows they are a lot of people don't which is why so many love this channel to.
Ayee my boat is in the video! Keep it stored over there at Jim’s 😂 as a local, paradise pier is an amazing place for moorage, repair, and service. Amazing video as always. Always look forward to the crabbing content and of course, the cooking afterwards👌🏽
I’ve been watching your videos since the start of the pandemic easily my favorite TH-cam channel, Matts you’re such a wholesome dude. I’ve never even fish before, I just watch your videos man, the catch and cooks are the most coolest things ever for someone who’s never fished, imma go fishing this year so that’ll be awesome, thank you brother
Happy New Year! Wishing you and your family an amazing 2023. I’m from Singapore and studied in SF. Totally love your videos. Thanks for doing the Singapore chili crab. One day please make it out here and try it. 😂
Happy New Year !! I keep my boat at Pillar Point Marina, in Stockton. They always treat me Good... What is your go to remedy for sea sickness ? I love to go crabbing but confined to snares ! Some times I even get sick Snaring for crab on the beach !! Thanks...
Hey im from stockton. Only been fishing once in my life and just from watching your vids brother i really learned alot and still am learning, thanks for always putting out amazing content
After watching your videos for years I had my first crab on nye. I must say, I was not expecting it to be that sweet. At the end I felt like I was about to go in a sugar coma.
The “crab butter” referred to is the yellow-white-greenish substance that is revealed after the large shell has been removed. This is actually a digestive gland known as the hepatopancreas, an equivalent to our liver and pancreas. It can be high in Domoic acid, which is a potent neurotoxin called Amnesic Shellfish Poison (ASP). The "butter" can also contain a lot of other toxins, such as mercury.
About 2 years ago you were cleaning a fish on the beach and explained cutting the fish so as to rapture the gall bladder. That was a problem I had till I saw the video. Although my father taught me about that with chicken, you made me know it applies with fish also. Thanks.
Awesome video Matts good to see you out and about catching some good groceries. I hope you had a great New Year celebration. Anyways I hope and pray for you and your family for this 2023 to be blessed with good health and happiness. Aloha from Kansas
Happy new 2023 Matts. Thank you for all your tips! Some came in handy for me. You have alot of experience so keep them coming! Going not just fishing but trying crabbing and clam digging this year! 👌
So many sand dabs! Also eye-opening to see how hard it was for some of the crab to get into the net. I wonder if stiff sided netting for those volcano hoops would be easier for them to get into. I’ve definitely pulled up nets chock full of crab though so I know they do get in eventually
One thing I learned from a friend whose family owns multiple boats is they took a grill, made a wood platform and added a mount so it would fit into the pole holder vs a grill on the floor.
This looked like a great trip out there! And some of the best food ever! As always thank you for the excellent and informative content my guy, safe travels
On the east coast for blue crab, I do salted chicken halves(just pack them in Kosher salt for like a week), with a can of tuna with some holes poked in the can. Let them soak for 5 or 6 hours and usually end up getting my individual limit after 2-3 pulls. The traps are full enclosed traps, and I need like 10-20lbs or weight depending on the current.
I've been freezing bait bags for years now. So much nicer! I've also been getting in the habit of hanging the bait bags in the pots as I stack them in the boat. Then all you gotta do is toss em overboard when you get on the water ;)
Always humble, admits on camera that not once but twice forgot plug!🤣🤣🤣 I have zero chill compared to him. Losing a drone in Bay, almost drowing first time abolone diving and my favorite his self inflating life vest going off while launching his kayak in chest deep water. Not that all those things could not have happened to me, but I would lose it but not Matts. I am paraphrasing but he usually says "oh well". 🔥
Great stuff! QUESTION!!!!!! So, I saw you lose a Trap before and sometimes you attach Plastic Bottles with screw on tops with them. My question is, why don't you put trackers inside the Bottles just in case?
Hey Matt, Where did you get the overflow hose for Thuy's tank and what size? He made me the live bait tank but I could not find the hose at Home Depot. Thanks.
Great video Matts and Happy New Year !!! 🥂 Fun day in the water and what a delicious meal, thanks for the recipe I am definitely going to try it. Love your tips and info, Looking forward to more goodness this year 🙏😍✌
I'm dealing with kidney failure and heart disease,I try to watch you when I get my treatment s thank you for inviting me 🙏
Woooow. Not a single person thanked him for his work so I’ll do it.
Jim you did a badass job. Love the tackle set up !! Great work ! Thank you on behalf of the TH-cam community
19:49 that one crab floating in the water 😂
I have been going through some tough times and I go to dark places sometimes. These videos always bring me back out of the darkness. Thanks Matt
19:45 LOL that crab swimming away in the background is hilarious 😂
I came to see if anybody else caught that as well😂😂
From Singapore here. That looks pretty authentic man. All you're missing are those buns, mantou buns to lap up the sauce. Nicely done.
That sounds incredible. I'm planning to use Calvin's recipe, and I'll add mantou to the mix too!

This feels like a slight at take. But he means no harm by it. He's a good dude.
Your videos are a sweet relief in a world of struggle.
Keep going strong Matt, your are inspiration to me dealing with hardships and chasing your passion. Thank you and keep up the content.
All good bro hope everything gets on the right track asap!

QUESTION!!!!!!
So, I saw you lose a Trap before and sometimes you attach Plastic Bottles with screw on tops with them. My question is, why don't you put trackers inside the Bottles just in case?
Remember that sea sickness medicine you picked up in Mexico 🇲🇽? Headed that way and need to see if it helps out. Thanks for sharing!
Just wondering is buoy on your hoops supposed to be red and white? Thanks for any information
Hey Matt, Where did you get the overflow hose for Thuy's tank and what size? He made me the live bait tank but I could not find the hose at Home Depot. Thanks.

Looks Calvin didn’t know about the fisherman’s life jig rod 😂

Happy New Year! Great video

19:48 peep the floating crab lmaooo
The Garmin Echomap has a feature where it tracks your drift. I use it all the time for salmon and lingcod fishing!
Hey Matt 🤚what kind of mic do you use? I can hear everything clearly
Happy new year from Germany!
Jim we rolling in stockton😂😂
Have you ever taken that boat in 4’ swells ?
Question what casting reel are you paring with your 7ft rod?
@FishermansLife_ I see no way to message you on there.
dude im so ready for cod season to open up where im at on the pacific, it dont open till may 1... URG so far away LOL
Stupid question but how does the spoon work for catching fish?
Newbie Q: is their mobile (cell) phone coverage off shore that far? Perhaps a bluetooth/GPS tag device to the bouy can work?
Hey Matts. Why aren’t you guys using leaded rope on all of your traps? Nylon is a bad idea.
Sic video. Happy New Years brother ❤️. Have you ever been to Crescent City California on the coast next to the Oregon border?
Have you tried crabbing with your drone?
When you ring guys on your boat do they pitch on fuel? They should offer at least. Or pay for boba and dinner
