How Bluetooth Works

- My wireless speakers, earphones, hands-free calling - what’s the magic behind Bluetooth tech? How does it all work?
The idea of what we call “Bluetooth” today was first introduced back in 1989. Dr. Nils Rydbeck, who was the chief technology officer at Ericsson Mobile, and inventor Dr. Johan Ullman had this revolutionary idea to develop a pair of wireless headsets. They brought Dr. Jaap Haartsen on to the project. A mere 5 years later, he’d be the engineer who made the breakthrough and came out with the first protocol.
It took a few more years to perfect the technology. But finally, in 1999, they presented their first hands-free headset to the world at the Comdex computer exposition and trade show in Las Vegas.
SUMMARY
- Three companies were working separately to create short-range radio technologies that would connect computers and different devices using short-wave frequencies. But since the invention was in its early stages, Intel, Ericsson, and Nokia decided that the best way to proceed was to create a single wireless standard.
- Bluetooth works a lot like Wi-Fi. It uses radio waves to send data between devices at short distances. Now, whereas Wi-Fi uses radio waves to transmit data between your router (where your Wi-Fi comes from) and your device, Bluetooth does it between devices.
- Bluetooth can connect to 8 devices at the same time without any interference from other wireless items like garage doors or baby monitors.
- The Bluetooth transmitters in both your computer and your devices use 79 different frequencies in that range.
- If you’re wondering what devices use Bluetooth nowadays, the answer is almost all of them. Phones, headphones, earbuds, speakers, stereos, TVs, cameras, cars, tablets, game consoles, you name it!
- When Bluetooth first came out, it was really easy for someone to access your data without your permission. But over time this technology has become more secure.
- There’s this trend called bluejacking where a person or company can send you their electronic business card or an ad as a text message using Bluetooth. Of course, when you see that, you either ignore it or panic! But this is something that mostly happens in public places where everyone is using their phones.
- The amount of non-ionizing radiation present in Bluetooth headphones is a lot less than what’s in a typical cellphone.

Hey there, gadget lovers, do you prefer wired or wireless earphones?
Wired
Probably Wireless not comfortable and less stressful 😅
BRIGHT SIDE wireless!

Fun fact (and a correction), I was working at IBM back in the 1990's when Bluetooth was just a pilot project and we were testing it. And the companies involved in creating the Bluetooth standard were actually Intel, Ericsson and Nokia, yes, but also IBM and Toshiba. Not a fact you would find in standard writings about it sometimes, because most mention only Ericsson, Intel and Nokia. But if you look, you will find it was 5 companies, not 3. Three companies invented the tech. but 5 of them launched it and the Bluetooth standard and the Bluetooth SIG (special interest group) in 1998 and IBM and Ericsson were the founding signatories. IBM and Ericsson also helped improve the footprint of 5G recently too.
Great thing u guys did
When I was younger, I always thought bluetooth would be the future because it looks super futuristic compared to other technology. Here we are with airpods, which is a form of bluetooth headphones, very cool
Thank you very much for sharing this video. I am a computer tech teacher at a school and will show this to my students next week. It is a very well-made and understandable discussion, and I’m sure they will enjoy it. I’ve watched many of your videos and really appreciate them.
Lol i remember those days when i had a nokia phone and i used to ask my friends to send me songs via bluetooth. The good old days.
I remember I had to be next to them until the transfer was completed
Yo
Same here, some of the songs were even recorded from a radio lol. Precious.
I could have related more to it had it been named 'Yellow Tooth'

Like most TH-cam explanation videos, they take a 2 minute explanation and stretch it out to 10+.
People that love the sound of their own voice.
The video never answered the actual question of "how does Bluetooth work". It describes in depth about how it's used and its functions though
that's what I was thinking!!
Watch it in focused.
Yeah
Exactly 👏
If you guys were listening, you would have heard how Bluetooth works: Frequency hopping, protocol exchanges, address assignment, security protocols, etc. - Perhaps you zoned out when you heard all this and don't remember seeing it demonstrated or hearing it said? If so, then rewind the video to about 7m.10s mark - He explains it all and even throws in some rudimentary graphics for those with elementary attention spans!
Phone : Hey man, How ya doin ?
AirPod : Oh, not bad.
Meanwhile, my Bluetooth enabled earphones listening to itself while I am watching the video: "Wow, I'm on TV"

I use BT everyday for calls and music thru headset. This is good info to know.
Medium speed voice, nice design, plain words. Thanks for making this video
This has been bothering me lately and I finally looked it up!😩
1. A quick video - 10 minutes
2. I like how the video is 10:01
I use my bluetooth everyday, with wireless headphones too listen to music, but thanks for the info, now I know what it is all about. 👍
Great!
I use bluetooth headset almost all the time
Never realised the tech behind this is so amazing and mind bending. Technology around us so advanced and we are waiting for time machines....
I have a pair of JVC bluetooth headphones and I love them . I do get interference now and then but nothing too serious. Thanks for the info on how they work.
Great I was wondering if you was going to get the pirate Bluetooth in this and you did great job folks keep up the good work love this channel
Oh man, back then when tech giants collaborated with each other instead of monopolising their electronics.
I am glad this was on recomendation or my somebody was monitoring me or read my mind through my device😱 giving me goosebumbs now.
Yeah I also use the Bluetooth for sharing the songs and to connect with other devices too....🤗 and thanks for this wonderful information 😊😊
This channel is amazing!

I’d love to know who narrates these videos, he’s a great narrator, explains thoroughly and has an amazing vocabulary. Great videos 👍🏽
I use a Bluetooth headset which simultaneously connects two devices. I connect my Android mobile phone and my Windows laptop simultaneously. While I attend virtual meetings on my laptop, my headset alerts me and switches automatically to my mobile phone whenever a call comes (also if I make a call myself) and automatically switches back to my laptop when the call ends. Amazing technology.
Thank you so much, this video was really insightfull and it helped me so much for my TISG presentation

Oh no! Who for instance?
It is easy for them...They watch BRIGHT SIDE'S videos and make videos based on the informations they get from here..

I noticed the Guardians of the galaxy reference at 9:33 in the video, that's awesome, "awesome mix vol 1" 👍👍
I use a Bluetooth enabled speaker along with a cordless mike for my karaoke singing practice, the songs coming from TH-cam on my mobile phone. I find this device a boon since i can practice singing to professional standards. I am also able to give performances to limited audiences. Hitherto I had to depend on instrumentalists for musical accompaniment but now I can perform wherever required.
Who else noticed that every bright side video is nearly or exactly of 10 minutes!
It's because TH-cam algorithm

I thought it was pretty straight forward. But then again I read board game manuals for fun.
who else thought that 7:55 was going to turn into some advertisement about a virus blocker or vpn or somethin like that
Yeah! I was thinking skillshare or brilliant!
I use Bluetooth for my car stereo but it's so amazing to see how technology has changed rapidly overtime from Cassette tape to CDs to Aux cord then Bluetooth 😁what's next , a device that can transmit singnals telepathically
Where when you think of a song it actually plays
Very interesting and informative.
I think I've never really used the Bluetooth technology until the beginning of this month when I purchased my first TWS earbuds. Here where I live there are trams and electric buses and when I'm using my earphones nearby the electric cables, my earphones get a lot of interference and that's really frustrating. 😕
Other Bluetooth devices can interfer too.

Thanks for this important video & I use Bluetooth to run my mobile app "Shareit" for transferring photos & videos from my device to other devices. Thanks again.
I want to know more about specific absorbtion rate please. Thank you.
That thumbnail though 😅
Why there is sound delay in mobile to headset connectivity
That's my question also to bright side corner. Id like to use Bluetooth to my mobile game but it's so delayed.
It's called latency, it'll be there in almost all wireless devices. You need to check the latency before purchase. It should be minimum.
Recently snapdragon has released a new Bluetooth chip with Aptx technology which they claimed that has very less latency.
