    Loving the new avionics. Not many Skymasters with that kind of panel nowadays.

    Great video! I don’t know if you saw it but recently, Josh flowers who has aviation101 channel and tons of followers was looking to get into a sky master. I bet you guys can do some cool videos together he recently did a flight in the southwest in one. Love the new panel. Can’t wait to do mine.

    Cool! I'm about to install an Aspen in my 1978 P337H. Where did they install the RSM?

      Hi John. I know we spoke via email about this but I wanted to reply here as well in case anyone else had this question.
      We did have a struggle finding a location that meets Aspen requirements and was magnetically quiet. We mounted bracket for RSM in left wing tip. (P/N: 091-0003-011, S/N: 207032), Fabricated and installed in most O/B panel of L/H wing. Bracket fabricated from T3 2024 .040" aluminum.
      Two issues with internally mounted RSM. No OAT or backup GPS.We installed an OAT probe under the wing and wired into the Aspen ACU2.
      We turned off the GPS function of the RSM as the IFD440 acts as the backup GPS.
      I hope this helps...

    Now that you've flown behind the new panel for a few hours, what do you think of the Avidyne/Aspen combo? Any regrets on your choices?

      Hello and thank you for watching! I have to say that I LOVE my new IFD 540/440 and the Aspen PFD 1000 Pro Max combo. These devices work so well together and also integrate perfectly with my legacy avionics and automation. Both Aspen and Avidyne's tech support is amazing and their support for older and more "unconventional" GA aircraft such as mine is second to none. Like I said in the video, I now have so much more situational awareness that I find it difficult to remember how I flew before this upgrade. I love it!

      Hi Tom, as you know, Josh, Dan and the gang, really know their avionics. I’ve had a few panel upgrades done by Brant Aero, including my latest, full glass and auto pilot, all test flown by Pat, never had an issue with my system, Great job. 👍👌

      I know, I know... I am working on an iPad mount that gets it off the yoke and on my left side for my own sanity and for future avionics videos...

    Concerned about the amount of in-cockpit eyes in a VFR environment and a relatively busy VFR area. Second set of eyes focused on in-cockpit camera.

      Yeah, I hear you and thank you for pointing this out. This flight took place in the airspace surrounding my home airport where I fly A LOT and it is also where I originally trained for my pilot's license so I know it intimately. When I hear traffic calls on the radio I can immediately place the aircraft in 3D space in my mind as well as the fact that I have both ADS-B traffic advisories and a RYAN TCAD that gives me transponder traffic. My Right Seater who was doing some shooting for me this episode is currently working on his PPL too and we were both scanning for traffic a lot more than probably shows in the edited video. You are definitely correct that more looking outside the cockpit is in order and I will heed your advice. Thank you.

    Tom, I didn’t catch what auto pilot you have in your skymaster

    • @tomairtv
      @tomairtv  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I should have been more detailed on that... My autopilot is the Cessna 400A which came stock on the plane but is pretty good and has been a reliable workhorse. It has needed a little TLC over the years and I have had to replace a servo or two along the way but I can fly a fully coupled ILS or RNAV approach and it has been very reliable lately which makes me happy. Sure, if I had the STEC 55 I could tie in the vertical guidance from the ASPEN which would be AMAZING but I don't have a spare $55k lying around so I need to keep this 45 year old computer working as long as I can.

    Nearly an hour long vid 'about avionics '. Would have been great to see some avionics instead of gopro footage of the back of your neck.

    The guy standing there with his hands in his pockets looks terrible. As though he’s not really interested.
