    Thanks for the video. Freiburg is a wonderful town, but you missed its most important legacy. Edmund Husserl, the founder of Phenomenology, and Martin Heidegger, arguably the most influential philosopher of the 20th century, were both at the university in Freiburg. This would be like going to Athens and not mentioning Plato and Aristotle.

    Great video. Just one thing: As far as I know, the "Bächle" were actually used as water for extinguishing fires so you wouldn't have to transport it from far away.

    • @sandralindenfelser6576
      @sandralindenfelser6576 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually the Bächle were used to clean the streets from all the stuff which were thrown onto the streets. There were the Bächleputzer who swept the dirt into the Bächle and then out of the town.

      You will be surprised, how many people can speak english here. Give it a try one day! Yet we are always happy to see that someone gives his best shot and at least "tries" to speak the local language here though 😄💛

    Thanks James for sharing..I am from a very small village Fryeburg'Louisiana named after my great grandfather Woodrow Frye and his brother. They (I think may have been from Freiburg (or their family). Anyway checking out Freiburg through TH-cam. Lovely historic town. Great picturesque area..and the old Medieval history is charming and fascinating. My daughter is engaged to a man from Germany and he is encouraging her to investigate our roots..Love thlittle canals with water and lovely architecture. Duncan's for sharing.

    0:38 That's false. The old painting you showed isn't from the Middle Ages. It was the Fortress of Vauban around 1700. St. Martins Gate and the Swabian Gate has nothing to do with this Fortress. The only remaining Buildings are Breisach Gate and Kanonenplatz.

    The “Bächle“ were never built for waste but for water for the horses!

    • @jamesingermany332
      @jamesingermany332  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re right! Waste often collected in the Bächle but they weren’t originally designed for the purpose of waste removal. The Freiburger Bächle have a long and storied history. Get an overview here:

    Nice views and commentary- but music doesn’t match up to what we are seeing- Lol. I was there in 1987. Later I found out my maternal GG grandfather was from Freibergwhen it was Prussia. He was a stowaway on a boat to America at 7 yrs old. His grandmother wanted him to escape military service, but he ended up being drafted on the north side of Civil war and imprisoned in Andersonville (?)prison. He survived and moved out west- had more kids. Talk about weird coincidence.

      Hm i think you're thinking of the wrong town ;) Freiburg in BW was never part of Prussia. There's another Freiburg further north that was tho

    • @guntherseebacher2667
      @guntherseebacher2667 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      you got this wrong...Freiburg was never part of Prussia.....you may well be confused with Freiberg......a different city up north.

    Hi James, I live in Florida and am planning to move to Europe in about 4 or 5 years. I love Germany (my great grandfather and before all lived in Germany). I dislike snow, hence living in Florida and am trying to find a smaller town/village in Germany where the weather isn't too snowy or cold. Freiburg looks to be pretty decent weather wise considering the majority of Germany doesn't have clear skies and sunny weather like florida. Can you give me a little feedback on the weather there year round and if you have any knowledge of other areas of Germany with decent weather.

    • @thbdg4838
      @thbdg4838 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, FREIBURG is good choice bc it´s known to be a warm city with a lot of sun. The snow is up in the mountains of the blackforest, so Freiburg doesn’t have much snow like i.e. the region of Allgäu where the famous castle Neuschwanstein is located. But Freiburg is not a big city. If you’re looking for sth bigger, fancier with more culture, exhibitions, theater etc. you should consider Munich, Frankfurt, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Leipzig or Dresden.Good luck!
