Having studied these assorted disassembly videos, and taken on board assorted comments: I pulled the remaining stub slightly out, taking care not to sever it, then gripped the more solid stem and pulled a little further. Then using long nosed pliers (grips) I gently pulled it out as it came out quite smoothly - well they are inserted in much the same way after all… Having done this with one, did the other one with the same result. Time taken: 1 minute 40 seconds, start to finish for both covers. I would like to offer thanks to these wonderful people for inspiring me or put another way, there had to be an easier way than this partial dismantling process.

How did you loosen the part of the rubber grip that you peeled back to access the top screws beforehand? I have to replace my rubber port doors, but the rubber grip on the body is firmly adhered.

In my opinion he used hot air gun to melt glue and then uncover the rubber grip

I have the exact same problem. The cover would go on OK with the black plastic mount removed. But once the assembly is put back on the camera, the upper edges of the rubber cover (where the tabs are) start to pop out a little bit. And stays like that no matter how much I push it in.

had the same problem with the 5d mark 1. The right hand tab was not as long as the original and so would not hook behind the slot. Cutting around the fringe at the top allowing the tab to go in further did the trick.

It is completely unnecessary to remove two screws next to the word "OPEN" on the bottom side of the camera. They are completely irrelevant to this procedure. Only one screw needs to be removed from the bottom: the one holding the back cover (so that you'll be able to bend it to the side slightly).
Apparently, you assumed that these two screws hold the date battery tray. They don't. The battery tray is held by a single small screw on the side.

    what screw driver you used?

I used a screwdriver with Philips tip size 000
Be careful, those screws are very small and they are of 3 different lengths - don;t mix them up!

When I put the part back in after replacing the cover, the cover just pops back off. Think I got a bad cover?
