Gary, Great Video! Have you thought about having a small worm farm to turn the compost into black gold (AKA the Worm castings) :)? I have millions of worms that I raise for fertilizer for my garden, and also to teach others how to care for them :) Worms are the secret to any great garden :)
I follow about 12 gardening channels and this one is my favorite. Overall I learn the most basic things to do from Gary and so many are quite inexpensive and less difficult, aggravating, or stressful. I have three of these compost piles going at the same time, but I used pallets to frame out my bins. I fill them with lots of leaves, food waste from the family, a ton of coffee, garden waste, cardboard, and shredded paper that doesn't have colored ink or plastic. Good stuff! My goal is to buy as few bags of soil as possible.
Thanks so much. Nice on the 3 piles. After they are going for a while, you save so much on soil and bagged organic fertilizer. And the garden is healthier. Leaves give us most all the compost we need. Mixing with grass clippings can help and I always add some sprinkles of rotted cow manure packed with worms & microbes. Collecting stops mud forming and is a bi-daily chore for a month or more but well worth the raking time. Love to you all from Tipperary, Eire. 💖🙏🌻

Grew up under a canopy of 100 ft pecan trees and this is exactly how we composted all those leaves and grass clippings. Mowing and bagging helps speed up since broken up. We would drop in the center some fresh compost and veggie peels. Have to chuckle when I see the cute little compost tumblers.

Gary was so nice here in N.Y today that's exactly what I did. Used fence and post just like yours. I love the leaves. Fill up the bottom of my pots also in the spring with them so I don't have to use so much dirt. Can never have enough leaves.

Glad I watched to the end; I was gonna comment to ask whether it mattered if the leaves were placed in direct sunlight or in shade or somewhere in between, but you answered me first!

I just use a very large, oblong shaped heavy-duty plastic bag, that is zippered(bag is 12mil thick tarpoline material). It holds ~15-20 cubic foot of material. Keeps the rain out when I don't want it. I shred the leaves beforehand with a purposed leaf shredder... and turn the material 2 times/month. I throw in my excess red wigglers from my vericomposting bins, and within 6 months, have beautiful, dark, ready-to-use leaf mold+ castings. I have no idea what this bag I use was originally purposed for, but it works awesome for this purpose.

Thanks for this explanation. I decided to just do this though I wasn't completely sure how it would work out. I have a bin I built with scrap wood for composting but haven't been keeping up because of back pain and time constraints. It sat empty for over a year. I found a good system to collect and shred leaves using my lawn mower and I'm really pleased with my results just before our first winter weather happening today. Seeing this video gives me so much hope that I finally hit on a good idea to help organize my system. Subscribed!

I'm doing it slightly differently but I have 28 garbage bags of leaves I'm hoping to have turned into leaf mold by the time I need it next year. Just finished yesterday in fact and already the ground is as full of leaves as when I started lol. I'm done raking and mowing and bagging by hand though. I'm going to get an attachment for my mower and do it like you. That looks soooo much easier.
The attachment is the best for composting. I use it know for leaves and for greens when hot composting. @@LBrown-eb1be Are you planning to add some greens to hurry the process along? If you are and it really matters to you to keep them out I would suggest plastic bins maybe? But that seems a bit expensive and excessive to me so idk. If you're not adding greens I don't think they will be attracted to the bags. They're too damp for them to bed in it as well :/

One thing to keep in mind when collecting leaves is that leaves are a really important resource for native bugs and small animals to hide or hibernate over winter. If you can, leave some leaf piles in different areas of your yard to ensure everyone has a safe place to hide throughout the winter.

This is also a good time to create over-winter red wiggler worm bins for gobs of vermicompost come spring. Keep the bins above 60 degrees to keep them working during the winter. (Worm death occurs at about 40 degrees.) Check periodically to feed & moisten. Best advice is to just let them work without pawing through the bin. My indoor bins run from Oct- April with little fuss.

I had to clear out A LOT of weeds from my garden this fall so I had bare soil everywhere. When the leaves started to fall I gathered them up and mulched the garden pathways to keep my feet from getting too muddy it rainy conditions and to help nourish the soil and to help manage weeds. I only have two large trees on my property so it takes me a few days to gather up enough.

Hi Gary. I drove through my neighbourhood for the last 2 days getting lots of brown bags of leafs.. I made a cage like yours.. It's almost full . What do I do with the rest of the full brown paper bags. I really don't want to put the leafs into plastic bags $ , with holes in it.. Everything so far has been FREE.. Thank you for helping us with our gardens...
The leaf pile should collapse. Soak it down. It may take a couple weeks but you can add the rest of the leaves then. If you have room a 2nd pen is good. You will eventually have a nonstop supply of compost every year Join this channel to get access to perks which focus on garden mentoring and member influenced videos: th-cam.com/channels/ptL6_qMImyW_yZwiMjQdpg.htmljoin You can find items I use or discuss in videos, by checking out my Amazon Storefront for fertilizer, pest management, shade cloth, seed starting supplies, books and more! at www.amazon.com/shop/garypilarchiktherustedgarden As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualified purchases. Hi Gary.. I made another cage , it's full now to. I ended up with 100 brown bags of leafs. Lol Shredded with the lawn mower. Here in Canada today is our last day for nice weather. We are to start getting snow this week. Garden Hose is going inside now.. Couple of questions .. Should I put a tarp around the cage. ? Would that keep moisture in? And is it to heat up .? The Temperature is up to a 150゚ in the cage. Thanks for all your help .
Hi Gary . I'm kinda freaking out.. Today, I was wetting it down. I noticed something yellowish just under the top layer of the leaves. I moved more leaves away, and there was so much of it. I left a little broken plastic planter on top of the leaves yesterday. And all this yellowish stuff has like climb up the pot to.. It's really hard to describe to you.. It's really funky looking.. I have 6 Rubbermaid bins of Red Wiggler Worms inside my house. I no, if worms don't like something, they won't go near it. Their so smart, lol I just don't know if this yellowish stuff will hurt the worms that's in my leaf mold . Do you have an email address so I can send you pictures.. Or Hopefully, you know what I'm talking about , and this stuff is normal.. That's what I hope you tell me lol Thank you for all the hard work you put into your videos , for all of us.. Cheers
Thanks Gary! Is there any value in lining the inside walls with cardboard? Obviously, it won't last years, but it seems like it would help retain some moisture for a while. (I'm used to thinking in terms of the Denver area climate, where moisture is scarce.)
Yes, I’m in Wyoming And the biggest obstacles to compost, are the dry winters and ravaging winds. We lived in Md for awhile and I had success with leaf mold there. Beautiful climate there, with lots of moisture. I loved living there.
Cardboard would work. And once soaked, laying a tarp on it is okay. Sorry for the stupid question: would I get a bunch of weed seeds in my leaf mold pile using the pen style? Have people had issues with this? I want to make leaf mold to use as potting soil in a few years. I am not sure if I should use the pen style or put the leaves in 6 foot tote bags.

Hi Gary. I have a Toro leaf blower/vac that I use to bag the leaves and it kinda shreds them. Which is better for cold composting, raked leaving them whole or shredding with the vacuum?
IMHO, whole leaves. The mixture needs air, moisture, and time for the fungus and worms to do their work. The pile will settle during the compost process.
Shredded and smaller is always better. For those that have small space like an Apartment/Townhouse just get a big trash can & drill holes on the bottom& put yr leaves in there. Leave the lid off. I tend to put other leaf scraps from the garden too as long as they are not infested.

I have about 15 30 gallon black trash bags that I filled with leaves last year and just left them alone. I haven't opened them yet, but when I do I was wondering if it would be ok to just dump them all into a cold compost bin that I am going to make like the one you just made in this video. the reason I want to know is that I am not ready to use this yet and I can tell that some have broken down, but not all of them have.
Yeah put them all in one place. I sort of do that with the 2 small trashcans and dump them into the bigger container. I like that you can use leftover materials. The problem I have in the mountains of Wyoming (7,000 feet) is that it's extremely cold and dry in the winter (minus 13F last winter, but recorded as low as minus 30F), which makes it difficult to add water and turn the compost. I'm trying deep layers of leaves/grass clippings on the beds this year and hoping we have enough relatively warm days (above freezing) to turn the hose on and keep it moist. When we bought our property 5 years ago we noticed that some areas under the trees were 10-15 inches deep in old dry leaves that still hadn't broken down, so compost is not something that happens naturally here. I used to live in northern Virginia, which gets 36 inches of rain. Sometimes I'd forget to bag a pile of leaves in the fall and find out come spring that it had turned to compost on its own. Here you have to work at it.

Question...my small town sprays for mosquitoes in the summer as we live near a wildlife refuge area that also has a river and is pretty humid in the summer months. Is it safe to use these leaves as compost if they have the spray on them? It has not rained here since the beginning of September and even if it had, would it completely rinse away the spray?
I would use them. Safe. I dont know but it wont harm the plants. And it already floated through the air and all over the place, including water. Are cottonwood leaves good for making leaf mold? I have two large cottonwoods next to my garden. I recently read that cottonwood leaves are not good for compost.
You can use them. There is worry that tons of green leaves can effect the pH of your garden. If you are worried toss in some garden lime on them here and there to balance it. But I would not worry about unless you are all CW leaves. FASTER and easier - use thicker wire fencing that can stand up on its own. Make a circle with about 15 feet (makes a bin about 4 feet across) and use carabiner clips to hold the ends of the wire together. Toss the leaves into the bin and leave them. When you need the compost, undo the clips and unwrap the cylinder.

They get shredded a bit from the tractor mower but its not a must. Only have leaves like oak leaves need shredding. Chopping any organic matter up does speed up the process, if you have the time. How do you keep tree roots from growing up into it and “eating” all your compost/leaf mold. We have limited space (open growing sunlight areas) and need to use understory compost sites. Didn’t want to throw down fabric cloth or sheet of metal as that inhibits worms and other microbiology from getting into it. Thanks!
I use the blue tarps under my leaf coral, I have done this for ten years and the worms still find their way into the coral. My compost corals are right next to oak and cherry trees and I have never had roots grow up into any compost coral. I use horse panels that require no t post. Works the same way as Gary's system. I started the first year with four corals and harvest two of them at end of 10 to 18 months. The other two are ready to harvest the next growing season. I live in North Central Florida and it can take from 10 to 18 months for the leaves to break down. Leaf Mold is great compost, I have grown strawberries in 100% leave mold with great harvests. I have over 100 oak trees so I have an abundance of free organic leaves in which to make lots of leaf mold compost.
You dont have to worry. It makes more than a tree can take. If the roots actually grow up through it. Put down barrier. Worms will come in from the side. Just let some of the pile expand over the barrier. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thanks, Gary! I’ll try the tarp trick that William mentioned, and let the worms come in from the sides. Had masses of fine roots come into the piles on the ground, and I fear take too much from the composting material. Plus with masses of fine roots makes it hard to spread. Appreciate all you do.
Could you not just use your lawnmower to mulch up the grass & leaves together, and put that right on top of your raised garden beds to decompose over the winter?
It more just dries and takes much longer to breakdown. However it does work and is good to do. I recommend that as a winter mulch and something that builds organic matter over the years.
Best compost pile you never have to touch it or turn it. Throw everything on top of your garden. Six inches high or two feet high. Doesn't matter. The worms do all the work. Your garden soil is mulched, your soil is evenly moist, and alive 365 days a year. You'll never have to dig it or rototill it. It's not complicated. Nothing to build. No digging. Your plants won't need fertilizer.
Discovered leaf mold 2 years ago. I mulch in driveway with mower actually pulverizes light easy to move to final spot. Drench the bag tie loosely poke a few holes with pencil around tie. Walk away. No further watering turning or other care. Get black gold in following autumn which makes your cover crops explode from seed. 24 years ago the clay was so hard weeds barely lived. Today I have twice the original bed over 12” deep. So looking forward to 25 because June 12 wind storm decimated (free trim) my giant silver maple which ramped up production to off the chart. Love your channel

Most of my leaves fall into the chicken yard. So tons of chicken poo mixed in. Should I still use it to make leaf mold or just keep adding it to my compost bins? Thanks
I've hot composted for a hundred years. Never done leaf mold or cold compost. This year I'm going to. I live in the desert so leaves are a little harder to come by.

Absolutely! Agree 200%!! Have learned so much from Gary and his book also!
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Yes! You have helped me to learn so much over the years! I love how you simplify things instead of making things complicated!
Gary, Great Video! Have you thought about having a small worm farm to turn the compost into black gold (AKA the Worm castings) :)? I have millions of worms that I raise for fertilizer for my garden, and also to teach others how to care for them :) Worms are the secret to any great garden :)
Thank you Gsry.

Work right. The core of green helps too.

The key is keeping it moist. So in more sun, it can dry out faster.

Perfect. Good method.

What kind of attachment is needed for the mower?
@@terryhall2299 I'm planning to do a DIY with some venting equipment. But I've seen you could buy attachments or pull behinds if you prefer that.
The attachment is the best for composting. I use it know for leaves and for greens when hot composting.

How can I deter mice from sheltering in the pile?
@@LBrown-eb1be Are you planning to add some greens to hurry the process along? If you are and it really matters to you to keep them out I would suggest plastic bins maybe? But that seems a bit expensive and excessive to me so idk.
If you're not adding greens I don't think they will be attracted to the bags. They're too damp for them to bed in it as well :/
Thank you!

One thing to keep in mind when collecting leaves is that leaves are a really important resource for native bugs and small animals to hide or hibernate over winter. If you can, leave some leaf piles in different areas of your yard to ensure everyone has a safe place to hide throughout the winter.

Great video as always Gary!

Perfect use!

You will eventually have a nonstop supply of compost every year

Their so smart, lol
I just don't know if this yellowish stuff will hurt the worms that's in my leaf mold .
Do you have an email address so I can send you pictures..
Or
Hopefully, you know what I'm talking about , and this stuff is normal..
That's what I hope you tell me lol
Thank you for all the hard work you put into your videos , for all of us..
Cheers
Do you need to cover this over the course of the year? Or is it best to leave it open? Thanks!

You can get leaf seeds. But it be rare for them to blow in or anything like that.

It is simple and effective. No on the JSB but I am going to look it up.

Thanks again for another great video. One question, can Black Walnut leaves be used in leaf compost?
It is often the roots that are a problem. I have composted the leaves with no worries.

What about if you have dogs that use the yard? Still safe to use these leaves?
Dogs are no worry.

I noticed that there is a tarp laying on the ground beside your leaf compost bin. Do you need to cover the compost bin? I made mine in Oct, and have not covered it. Thank You!
You dont. I use it at times for different reasons. I tarp helps keep the pile moist. So if yours dries out too fast, a tarp helps.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Great! Thank You!
If I do hot compost with leaves and don’t mind turning the pile frequently, won’t that be faster? What is drawback of hot composting of leaves?
Heat prevents worms from moving in and filling it with castings. It is faster for compost but if you dont let sit around for 6 months or so, it often has limited castings and worms.

I would like to start a leaf compost, however, I have a ton of pine trees dropping needles as well. Can I put pine needles in with the leaves?
You can for sure. The bottom fo that pile you saw had pine needles. The other side of my yard has pines. Ill being doing a video on it. They get a bad rap.

Does it matter if it's in full shade or does it need sun?
Nevermind...should have finished listening before typed a question! 🤦
Shade is fine. They key is it needs to stay moist.

Very interesting. Each garden is so unique.

I have black walnut scattered around my property. Is that a no go? I've been told not to hugel or compost with the branches of black walnut.
I dont know about the branches but the leaves are fine. The issue is with the roots

do you have Critters underneath the leaves as they break down and when you go back and use it that's what I'm afraid of
There is always a chance but it is not common for open leaves like that. There is no real shelter.

Do the leaves have to be shredded first?
They dont but smaller helps speed up things. Oak leaves should have a chopping.

Thanks

Gary, thank you for the video! Quick question - Are you dumping the leaves as they are or shredding them first? Also will you cover this pile in winter?
They get shredded a bit from the tractor mower but its not a must. Only have leaves like oak leaves need shredding. Chopping any organic matter up does speed up the process, if you have the time.

If you have a good pile, you can mix leaves in; turn it every week and have finished compost in 6 weeks instead of untouched and anaerobic 1 yr compost!
Yep. Turning speeds up the process greatly.

Thanks for the help
@@williamodell8634 Thank you, William!
Excellent idea.
1 year 😫 but i want my compost today

Can I make one with just grass clippings?
You can but it will smell bed piled high. It’s best blended with carbons like leaves.
Most of my leaves fall into the chicken yard. So tons of chicken poo mixed in. Should I still use it to make leaf mold or just keep adding it to my compost bins? Thanks
I would use it for just leaves if you want to have more leaf.
So… worms can eat leaves?
Worms eat paper that has not been chemically treated so yes they eat leaves
I've hot composted for a hundred years. Never done leaf mold or cold compost. This year I'm going to. I live in the desert so leaves are a little harder to come by.
Shredded cardboard can be use too in compost btw
