  • This is an up-close view, explanation and story of my son's time (Better known as "The Kid") driving his Jr. Dragster in the NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League. The NHRA Summit Racing Jr. Drag Racing League offers kids ages 5-17 a chance to race half-scale dragsters in a controlled environment at many of NHRA's 130 member tracks throughout the United States and in Canada long before they can obtain a state driver's license. The cars that Jr. Drag Racing League competitors race are called Jr. Dragsters and are half-scale versions of Top Fuel Dragsters. Using a five-horsepower, single-cylinder engine, a Jr. Dragster can go as fast as 85 mph and as quick as 7.90 seconds in an eighth mile, though younger age groups are restricted to slower times/speeds.

Touching video and a great speech! I'm hoping to get my son into it, and found your video! Inspiring! Thanks

Thank you! It was a great ride and now my son has worked in the Jr. Racing Parts world, a machine shop and is going to college to finish his engineering degree. I wouldn't have changed a thing and I would highly recommend this as a family sport! Thank you for the kind words and thank you for watching!

Good stuff. My buddy's daughter races NHRA dragsters and her kids are in the Juniors as well.

Thanks Mike! It's certainly a great program to get the kids hooked on a good productive hobby. My kids have friendships with the other kids/drivers that will always be there. Thanks for watching!

Thank you BR! It was a great experience to have with the wife and kids! The kids still look back at it fondly and value their trophies that they worked hard for. It was worth parking the big cars during that time to bond with the family like we did. Thank you for watching and thank you big time for sharing! BTW, love the new plan for the Fords you have for next year, I will be watching for sure!

Thank you Dennis! We had a total of 3 Jr's and we sold the black one in this video and a Halfscale Dragster with pink graphics that won Division 7 in 2011. We kept the white one in this video because both my son and daughter drove and won in it. It had been in storage for 6 years when we bought it and had run at Pomona with the previous owner/builder. We paid $1500 for it in '08 and I am going to hang it on the wall of the new shop in Montana when we build. It has a huge family history and I will save it if the kids ever want it for the future grandkids to drive. With the 3 Jr's, I was too busy for the big cars for about 4 years then my wife got cancer that she battled for the next 7 years. Now that all that is over and I am retired, It is time to reconnect with my tri fives again. It has been a great time being back and I have enjoyed meeting you and all the other great ones out there with the TH-cam Garage Channels! I hope you guys had a great weekend and when you are done with Scotty, send him my way...hahaha! Take care Dennis!

Hey Hubie I really enjoyed the video! The junior drags look very high tech man! Your son did great and spoke great up on the stage! Is your son still into racing now? Have a good one Buddy 👍

Thanks Don! It was a great time and worth the time away from the big cars during this chapter. We bought him a '71 Nova at 15 and I did not have a lot of time to help him with my wife's cancer battle so, he self-taught himself and did a full restoration on it with occasional help and encouragement from the family. He now works at Clay Smith Cams/Nic Woods Racing here locally. Nic is a Jr. Dragster Engine Builder and parts supplier. My son set up his Nova primarily for auto cross but, will drag race it once or twice too. I think he will be doing that soon.

Thank you for your video. one of the best ones that i have seen on you tube. Especially for someone that is just getting into the sport and trying to learn. Just curious, do you know what year that half scale car is? i am fixing to buy an 01 model.

Yes, the black one is a 2010 Halfscale Outlaw Extreme. Thank you for the kind words and best wishes on the new venture! It was a great time for our family when we were racing Jr's!

What big pumper carb is recommended for a 236 stroker 72mm piston big valve head ? Seen a lot of guys using it in mini bike drag racing .

I am not totally sure on that one! It has been since 2012 since we have run the Jr's. My son worked with Nic Woods at Nic Woods Racing and he is a big engine builder who will answer his phone. He would be a good guy to call and ask that question. Thanks for watching!
