Thank you for these videos , I couldn’t figure out where the little leaf spring went . Looked over so many videos and yours is the only one that re installed it . Such a life saver .
Nice job on this unit as always Gary! I preferred this unit in the Subaru cars over the CVT all the new ones have. Nice to see one taken apart. Cheers!
Thanks for the analysis on this one Gary. This transmission appears to be much better than the CVT job that Subaru also uses. Buick Dynaflow was even better than CVT. Glad to hear that you are staying busy this winter ( if you want to call this winter ). TakeCare, Bill
I really need to pay you. I got mine apart with zero trouble after seeing that the special tools for this thing are running as high as $800. Found the piece that holds the parking pall lever back in the oil pan, lol. The inverted U shaped part at about 21:11 below the spring that's part of the case. Got a used case from eBay but that's probably not the issue. It was slipping on up and down shifts and would flash the temp light. Just waiting on bearings and bushings to come in before I break open the drums. I have two of these cars and I paid nothing for them so I figured it was time to do the only thing I've never done to a car before. I was always scared of transmissions.
Glad your able to work on it. Any questions just let me know. Accepting all donations to paypal which is linked to my e-mail gsferraro@yahoo.com. If you would like to send some pictures send them to my e-mail and i can look too
Gary, a question. At 6;14 on the low clutches, it appears that you take the dished ring/ plate in one orientation to the clutches and put it back in in the opposite orientation. I am asking because I got confused on my rebuild and cannot find an illustration anywhere on the internet or my service manual. That is why I am paying so much attention to it. Can you tell me which is correct and what the final clearance should be ? Swapping the direction seems to make a large change in clearance. You videos are great !
The dish should face down like how i put it back in. If you look at the bottom steel, you could probably see a witness mark on the steel of where the dish was sitting
Woah, the perfect video I needed! Was reading through the ATSG book and getting ready to tear one down. Awesome clip of the anti-rattle springs! Any tips for installing the sprag?

Hey Gary nice video, but what kind of camera are you using? It’s either low resolution, or you need to clean the lens with alcohol (with a microfiber cloth) before recording, which should give you clearer video
You should get a 'Time lapse" camera set up... So in times when you have to hurry-- just let that run in the background-- and we can still get that tear down, more or less. It would really grow your channel, viewers wise also. Just saying.

Welcome Dave, when I film something during the week, I get there very early before the shop opens

Luke Strasser - agreed, the “step-geared” transmissions were better suited for this vehicle. The CVTs in these cars are crap & are prone to failure
Thanks Luke, always nice to hear from you, thanks for chiming in every week
thanks for the breakdown 👍 awesome update video

Yes it is, we don't get many of them and get 2 to 3 calls a week on CVT units

what the difference between brown clutch, some black and completely black clutch?

From the color of the fluid looks like it was neglected, original fluid never changed?
Thanks for the video, do you ever reuse separator plates with bonded gaskets if they look ok?
The tube at 14:09 is single use. Should replace it when you take it out. Running about $9 at the dealer right now.
Thanks for that, i actually did not know that

ok, you have a 1998 Mitsubushi? is it Front Wheel Drive?
Yes my front wheel drive car
Would love to see Subaru CVT when you get a chance to work on
Swapped out a few valve bodies on these.
What are the signs of a bad transmission pump?
Could have a whining noise, also a bad pump may not produce enough pressure and the trans may slip and delay
