It took me 5 hours of walking in circles to find the train station that should have taken me 10 mins to walk to if anyone had been willing to help. I was studying French in high school and part of our program was that we got the opportunity to go to Quebec City. I got to go and was able to speak a bit of French to people, it was enough to get by and it was how I started conversations out of respect. I would usually ask once I was uncomfortable (because I didn’t know many words that I needed in shops and whatnot) if the person I was being helped by knew English. One time we stopped on our way back at a gas station to get food/use the bathroom, etc. and I was speaking to the convenience store cashier and asked her if she knew English because I didn’t know the things I wanted to ask for in French. She said yes and then immediately said “but you should be speaking French” as if I was unaware. I also had this moment where I was like, I get this area is French speaking, but the French colonizers did take over a group of native people to get here and by default you should know their native language. french canadians do that as well. purposefully speak french when they know you only speak english (it's bylingual country and i'm an immigrant cut me some slack!) but they won't even try to speak to you in english even when you ask them things in english and they see that you're not native, they just answer to you in french, and i'm convinced they do that to you on purpose, no way in hell you can't speak english living in canada!!! and this happened to me A LOT. i'm from russia, if i saw a foreigner who's trying to speak to me in english i'd help them the best i could, not be a total dick about it, like "oh you came to my country and you don't speak russian then fck off". especially when english is an offical language in canada!!! so frustrating. i don't know, i've heard french speakers have some beef with english speakers and they're protecting the use of french, but why take your anger on me when you see i'm clearly struggling and do the best i can.

I live in another European country for a very long time, and I forgot French, and even with my destroyed French language, they were nice to me. When me and my cousin and I were lost and couldn't find a restaurant we were going to an old French couple who helped us in the right direction and we found the Korean restaurant we were going to.
Maybe we looked good and dressed well that everyone was nice. We were not overly out there with our outfits, too. I really do think the platinum blond is intimidating them.

There are some cultural flaws here like every place has (mainly being flaky or performative in social relationships) but we do NOT point and laugh or even stare at strangers' outfits, unless you're surrounded by really gossipy old ladies, a party of influencers, or a person who's clearly on a substance. In fact, in many areas here it's pretty common to dress really weird or quirky or to be in costume for some kind of job, so while you'll get a few curious glances, you're not gonna get that sense of hostile scrutiny everywhere you go. Again, not saying LA is perfect, just saying this one PARTICULAR kind of thing, we really don't do.
