  • In 1989 TSR brought out a sequel to their hit game "The Hunt for Red October" based on the book by Tom Clancy. This time they tackled a second book by him, Red Storm Rising (the only one of his books set outside the Ryanverse). Aimed at an audience wider than the traditional wargamers, namely those who were more casual gamers it was a well researched and written game that featured some very subtle mechanisms (such as a different turn sequence for the two sides that reflected their doctrine). Having recently managed to replace my long lost copy I wondered how well it had held up....

Awesome game! I played it when it first came out with my military unit in Europe in the late 80’s. We had such good times! The basic game is fundamentally solid but the advanced game enhances the game so much more that it is hard for me to want to play the basic with new players. My friends love 2v2 advanced rules!! We have had some really cool airborne drops or games with nasty chemical warfare! So glad you posted this online!! Loved watching and would love seeing another video!

Thank you. Unfortunately the advanced rules don't work so well solo.

Great review/playthrough! I played the game when it came out with friends and it was great fun! it was an easy game to learn and very interesting mechanics. In particular, the fog of war aspect and the base/standup units. I still have my copy.

I have a soft spot for it, some clever mechanics (especially the turn sequence) and fast play made it stand out for me.

Just managed to snag a copy on that well known auction site, along with Hunt for Red October. This was very informative.

A golden oldie I'd say. Quick to learn and easy to play WW3 game. I still find the game fun to play.

I might even extend the map and forces if I ever get time.

Played a Basic Game last night. Managed to screw up the roll 1 for destroy for at least a turn. Remember that if your piece rolls a 1 and at least matches the target piece in attack value it's an immediate kill. Also, tried to keep in mind the terrain effects. NATO couldn't roll for anything and got pasted in my game. In the end, WP had five Western cities, but the Battle of Kassel resulted in a Breakthrough and NATO regained control resulting in a draw. I'm looking forward to seeing how the addition of air power makes for a harder opponent in NATO.

We all make mistakes in gaming, as long as you had fun.

Without digging it out, from memory the 82nd Airborne (US) were included. Most airborne operations would be too small to be represented at this scale. Glad you liked it.

I was gonna ask If you ever tried 3rd WW? Since it appears your familiar with it, have you ever put the 4 in that series together? I was in a group that played monsters like that. What a blast!

I'm a big GDW fan and I owned the first game many years ago. I'm not a fan of huge games as time and space are limited. Interestingly my thought process is that a simpler game such as this simulates the command decision process better as a hugely detailed game results in making decisions that subordinates would make (a common issue with figure games).

@@jameslangham9854 No doubt your right about that & it is much easier to find someone to play it with you. I was incredibly fortunate to find that group. One of them became my best friend throughout thick & thin for 42 years. Lost him last year to COVID & heart problems bless his soul. Sorry, sidetracked, there is nothing in gaming (imho) that compares to meeting once a week with friends over a map 7x7.5 feet to “plot the fate of the cardboard world”. You just don’t get that with smaller games. TLD, 3rd WW, War in Europe. Also the larger game allows you to simulate command structure with its ups & downs. Once in 3rd WW one of our less talented players (Let’s call him Sam) pointed out he never got to be overall commander. I was on the Pact team with Sam & another very fair minded individual (let’s call him Al)The 2 of us decided that Sam was correct with his observation & we were determined to remedy it. So Al & I voted Sam our leader & resolved to follow his orders to the best of our ability. With teams & leaders chosen & the NATO forces set up we adjourned for the week. The next week when we mat Sam had a notebook (paper, computers were in their infancy) full of his war plans. Al & I were glad he had actually come up with a plan…until he explained it. “I am stripping the north, central and Persian Gulf of all their Air Mobile units. We will make Greece throw in the towel on turn 2”. He did indeed make Greece give it up on turn 2 but everywhere else NATO put up a wall so strong it made the NKVD jealous and NATO won an overwhelming victory by turn 4 & a new inside joke was born, We are sending all the air mobile units to Greece. Though we lost it was still fun.

It's a game where you always think the other side is doing better than it is.

I just overloaded the north with all my air assets and used my F-19s to destroy the Soviet Mainstay AWACs planes, which degraded all their planes' combat ability. Once that was done and air superiority was achieved my air assets completely degraded Soviet offensive capability. The south needed a lot less air power because the terrain there is suited for the defense and that's become a force multiplier.
