    @ndzoko You're right. And that's precisely why the Catholic Church insists there must be a living voice of authority to guide our interpretations. The 35,000 Protestant denominations follow directly from Luther's principle of "private judgment."

    • @chinojarjos
      @chinojarjos 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brother the church is at the end made by those who follow... as Jesus once said "watch yourselves from the yeast of the pharisees" we must follow no matter the cost! Some say "we teach the way" others say "we follow" but we must teach and follow the way, like the true prophets of old!!! Name it whatever you want but there Lord sure knows his bride and he is coming for her! We like to call her names but he knows her true identity!!!

      @@chinojarjos There should be a living voice. That's why Jesus appointed Peter lest we wander from the faith. The 35,000 denominations, each having their own interpretation, their own tweak is like having 35,000 types basketball and each calling it the legitimate one.
      What do you mean when you say follow? Follow in a general direction? Or some set of guidelines?
      Or to follow an authority whom the Master appointed until His return?

    I attended virtual Mass for Saturday 12/5/20, then I clicked on your video "the Advent Revolution." Your message has sent out a strong invitation to me personally. A quiet voice encourages me to prepare the way for Christ in my life; to die to sins, to be compassionate, to be another Christ on earth. I know that by myself, I cannot do anything, but with God, everything is possible. Thanks Bishop Barron.

    I wish I had heard this teaching when I was I young adult. Not only a great context for understanding the historical times but also to see the relevance in this present culture. The notion of Jesus coming into my life to advent a revolution sure makes a lot of sense. It would have also explained the radical change Christ makes in our lives to conform us to his will. Not an easy "five step process" some would have led me to believe in the early seventies. Thank God for his Church, and for her teachers and holy people to hold the fullness of Truth. I'm listening on!

    Another great video. This idea clearly points forward to when Christ comes the second time in His glory. When He will be "King of kings" and "Lord of lords." I think it is perfectly appropriate that each year we sing the great millennial hymn, Joy To The World. That hymn doesn't make any sense in the context of a baby who will be our spiritual savior. But it makes all the sense in the world when we look forward to His millennial reign.

    @phil vandermeeran Great talk Fr Barron. Phil - you don't accept scripture as authorities. Well, OK. That's fine - lets just leave it at that. However, Christians do accept the Judaeo Christian scriptures as authoritative. I am sure you know that some parts of our scripture are historical, some are poetic, some analogous etc. But fundamentally we use it as one of the ways God has revealed and does reveal Himself to us. I personally experience that every day. That either makes me insane or right. I am right- nothing else has had anywhere near the impact on me and my life than reading scripture with an open mind and heart. Before encountering God this was not the case; for me scripture was archaic, incomprehensible and irrelevant. Then I had an encounter with God and the scriptures changed for me. I just couldn't read them enough as every time I opened them I saw something new about God or the world or myself. That was 42 years ago and the experience has become richer and deeper.

    @ndzoko Wow, you're off the mark. There are 34,000 Protestant denominations (and possibly understandings of a particular part of Scripture), but there is only one Catholic Church, of which I'm a proud member. We are the original, and we have the authority and knowledge necessary for understanding Scripture. Quite simply, the Magisterium recognises what is literal and what isn't.
    Lenses: for example, Jonah in the belly of a fish is obviously not in a literal sense. Fr. Barron has a video on this.

    • @Meg-yd9zo
      @Meg-yd9zo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Christian church did not begin in Rome but in Jerusalem. Only the Holy Spirit and the Lord can guide us through Scripture. Only Christ Jesus and not the man made magisterium have authority on heaven and earth (see Matt 28). Taking Jonah literally? What about taking John 6:51 literally as the RCC does? For Christ tells us in the following passage it was meant to be taken spiritually..."The words I speak to you are spirit and they are life". In passage 57 He states, "Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me". If taken literally that would mean Christ was feeding on the flesh of the Father? How can that be when He told us "God is spirit"?

    I like this. In the modern world, we need to follow suit. If the early Christians were able to set at naught the authority of Caesar, we need now to set at naught the authority of capitalism (the latest Caesar) and its claims to have been given God's permission to exist. Caesar's claims of divinity were blasphemous. Capitalism's claims that there is no higher authority than social darwinism are also blasphemous.

    First of all, Father, thank you so much for all the good work you do in the field of evangelization and catechesis! When you speak, I believe God smiles. However, do you not use the Divine Name a bit too liberally? Considering that the Holy Father has commanded that we not speak it in our liturgical worship, out of respect for our Jewish brothers and sisters, would it not be "thinking with the mind of the Church" to refrain from speaking it in other contexts?

    @ndzoko Actualy, that's what 'Gospel' means: eyewitness testimony. It doesn't mean it was written by eyewitnesses - only that eyewitnesses gave their testimony.
    As I said, they are the best and closest historical documents about anybody for the next 1000 or more years, I believe. You can have a look at the chart in the book I recommended you for that, as well as your bare assertion about the negligibility of the outside corroboration. I hope you do take the time to do some reading up on it.

    I find this very insightful, but I am wondering if in saying at 4:19, "In me, in my own person, Yahweh is emerging definitively and victoriously as king," whether the "me--my" is a spiritualization to be nuanced more clearly. In a homily not long ago, the priest substituted the word, "I," whenever he encountered "the son of man." Would Jesus say this about himself? Right after the above quote, Bishop Barron makes a change in person from "me" to "he." I think that this is valid; the Church proclaims Jesus is Lord, and so he is. I myself find it Godlike that Jesus always points to God and to this mysterious "Son of Man. What do you think, Bishop?

    @ndzoko There is overwhelming evidence. The kind of evidence that converted the likes of C. S. Lewis.
    For that, I simply refer you to the four Gospels located in the NT in the Holy Bible. They are eyewitness testimonies that, although written years and miles apart, indeed corroborate each other and are corroborated by outside, non-Christian sources.

In a way, the Roman Empire not only could represent earthly rulership, but perhaps the evils and spiritual principalities of that domain which are rampant upon the Earth and that all humanity is subject to, and Christ's victory over them via his defeat of death (with death perhaps being the ultimate evil?).

    I did not enjoy this video as much as many of your other ones because it did not seem to have a central theme, and certainly not the one that the title indicated. It opened with an admonition against becoming complacent in the season and closed with a quick reference to advent, but the central bulk of the talk seemed to just stitch together from all across the bible the messages of a few individuals which contradicted the powers of the time. It left me as the listener more than a bit confused.

    Whys and what-ifs aren't helpful. They're speculative.
    And let's not forget that the Roman Empire DID convert, and passed this on to other great empires, spreading Christianity as far as humanly possible.
    There's so many possible answers I could give, but they too would likely be speculative.

    @StormTrek My goodness, Jesus didn't teach that He was the Messiah? Which gospels are you reading, friend? See Mt 16:16-17, for one. Your point about the popular notions about the Messiah vs. Jesus and the Apostles' notions is well-taken, but what's the pay-off? I would say rising again after the Romans put one to death, and on that pretext claiming authority over all worldly powers (including the Emperor), is a pretty clear defeat!

Why you continue to promote the idea that Protestants are somehow 2nd class Christians and that Roman Catholics somehow have the corner on the truth is very troubling. You remind me of the disciples when they complained to Jesus about those who were casting out demons. Jesus’ response to his disciples is worth further consideration. We are one body with many parts. On the other hand, if 35,000 denominations can be swept away in such (pardon the pun) magisterial fashion, there must be something they have in common you object to.
