English translation for anyone wondering - Title: "Burned"
Now the moon lights up my neighborhood
    I get up, walk around
    Can't sleep anymore
I stand by the window and I see
The last bus, the last stop
And I wish dearly and hope wildly
Yes, that you are on it
And offer peace to my weary heart
    Cause fear never gives in
When fear lives in soul and body
    It blazes up so easily
In the heart that was burned
    A thousand times before
    By someone who promised all
    And closed his door shut
Left me lying blue and burned
    Small, scared, weak
    With my dreams forsaken
Now I'm full of doubt if you are still the one
    Who turns me on again
    And burns me again
Now the moon lights up my neighborhood
    I want to be loved
    Not deserted or burned anymore
So show me who you really are
    Cause fear never gives in
When fear lives in soul and body
    It blazes up so easily
In the heart that was burned
    A thousand times before
    By someone who promised all
    And closed his door shut
Left me lying blue and burned
    Small, scared, weak
    With my dreams forsaken
Now I'm full of doubt if you are still the one
    Who turns me on again
    And burns me again
    Burned
    Cause fear never gives in
When fear lives in soul and body
    It blazes up so easily
In the heart that was burned
    A thousand times before
    By someone who promised all
    And closed his door shut
Left me lying blue and burned
    Small, scared, weak
    With my dreams forsaken
Now I'm full of doubt if you are still the one
    Who turns me on again
    And burns me again
And leave me lying blue and burned

"Torn" is a song written by Scott Cutler, Anne Preven and Phil Thornalley in 1993. It was first recorded that year by Danish singer Lis Sørensen, and again two years later by Cutler and Preven's American alternative rock band Ednaswap.

I am guessing this singer wrote the lyrics to this song or at least had a part in it (I would copy her name but my computer isn’t letting me). Man. I feel the meaning of the song hitting me much more directly than in Natalie Imbruglia’s version. I’ve always loved Torn, but seeing the English translation of these lyrics the meaning is much more obvious, direct and heartbreaking. Just a simple plea that almost everyone understands. I also feel her singing is influenced by truly living this song and knowing where it comes from because she wrote it. It’s so moving. That is not to say Torn isn’t a valid iteration and that Imbruglia doesn’t do it justice in her own right. I just feel there is a special soul magic, often, when art comes from an original source.

    • @coyfish4610

No she didn't. This song was written by Anne Preven for her Los Angeles based rock band Ednaswap. It was originally rejected by Warner, so they sold the rights to Danish Warner which translated the lyrics to Danish and turned the once dark song into a stupid ballad. Ednaswap actually included the original demo on their debut album even after both this and Natalie's version came out. If you listen to Ednaswap rock version, it's very dark and hard rock, which is more in tune with the lyrics.

The crap and nonsense written about the versions of this song and its origin are becoming ridiculous with endless discussion about covers, originality and now theft (!), cause the history is pretty simple:
    1) The song was composed by and original english lyrics was written by US musicians Cutler/Preven (later also producers) and UK producer Thornalley. Different sources state different years for creation of the song: Some 1991 (the year Cutler and Preven started a serious collaboration), some 1992 in-between, some 1993 (the year Ednaswap was formed).
But no later than 1993 Thornalley had the song published (copyrighted) on behalf of 'em all, and started to pitch the song to labels in UK/EU.
    2) First to pick up the pitch was producer, CEO and A&R for the danish label EMI-Medley, Poul Bruun. The song was selected for Lis Sørensen's 1993 album, but needed danish lyrics due to the all danish album concept. Danish lyrics was written by musician and writer Elisabeth G. Nielsen, and is unique - theme in "Brændt" is the same as in "Torn", but otherwise different and isnt in no way just a translation.
Producer of "Brændt" was dane Peter Biker (Usher, Sugababes, Pitbull, Chris Brown) and the acoustic/latin feel of the song was selected in collaboration by artist Lis Sørensen, A&R Poul Bruun, executive producer Soulshock (Whitney Houston, Mary J Bliges, Monica, Toni Braxton, Backstreet Boys, Leona Lewis) and Peter Biker. The production and sound design is also unique and differ heavily from other versions of the song.
    3) In 1995 Poul Bruun also worked with norwegian singer Trine Rein, and with the success of Sørensens version in mind, he picked the english version of the song for Trine's 1996 album. He was executive producer, and the song was produced in close collaboration with... Phil Thornalley - yes, one the 3 original writers/composers of the song. And...
On her previous album, Trine Rein had collaborated with... Scott Cutler (the 2nd of the original writers/composers) - he co-wrote Trines first major hit, and he was also involved in several songs on this '96 album and both albums' over all productions - including co-production of this song.
And guess who song the backing vocal on Reins' version... Anne Preven, the 3rd and last composer and especially lyrics writer of the song! She was also involved in several of the songs on Reins two first albums as lyric writer.
The lyrics are very loyal to the first published song with few artistic adaptions. The music production and structure of the sound design was clear pop with a found beat, synth layers, and elements of guitars, became a de facto blueprint for the later Imbruglia version.
    4) In 1995 Cutler & Preven included a rock version of the song on the debut album of their band Ednaswap, but the alternative/post-grunge rock version never picked up major succes. This version was produced by Cutler and studio wizard Matt Hyde (400+ documented production involvements in multiple genres) The label cancelled their contract.
They had played the song live in concerts since the creation of the song, and the song was also included on their 1997 second album on a new label.
In an attempt to pick up some of Imbruglias' success it was also released as a single in 1997/98.
This second Ednaswap version was co-produced by Dave Jerden (Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Alice in Chains) and was quite different from the first Ednaswap version by featuring only vocal and guitar the first half of the song.
    5) Finally the song made worldwide success when producer... Thornalley and Imbruglias' version was released in late 1997.
Thornalley was the major power of the album writing or producing half of the songs on the album, and most of the alternative bonus songs.
As mentioned, you can hear a clear blueprint of the production by listening to Reins' version, but the Imbruglia version got a more crisp vocal production and general sound feel, both acoustic and electric guitars placed more forefront in the soundscape and a fading guitar solo in the outtro.
Lyrics-wise there are only small variations compared to Rein, Ednaswap and the published version.
    6) Endless numbers of alternative or cover versions has been made since the first release... But as history shows, the first 4 and probably also most famous versions of the song; Ednaswap, Sørensen, Rein and Imbruglia are tight interwoven especially by personally and musically relations including the original composers/writers.
It makes no sense to talk about covers vs. originals in this case.

    I don't know what's happening. Everything is a lie.
I Love Rock 'n' Roll by Jon Jett (original by Arrows)
I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston (original by Dolly Parton
It’s My Life by No Doubt (original by Talk Talk)
Don't Turn Around by Ace of Base (original by Tina Turner)
