His name was Victor Shevchenko. He was a good friend of my Father's and a Cossack dancer. Victor was the first Treasurer for The Association of Ukrainians in Tasmania. My Dad wrote a short biography of Victor.
I personally haven't been there but I've met a few older gentleman one a Tolosa Park Ranger of many years and another and older gentleman known as Moonlight who was very old when I was a teenager and would have no doubt left this world many moons ago who would park at the end of Tolosa Street every morning and had done for decades he'd walk off into the bush until the evening and was said to know every part of Welling Park in and out. Well they have all told me stories of the same place a few hills over from Victor's Ruins up on the hill behind Knights Creek Reservoir supposedly a cave that's part of a rock formation known as Big Ben. They say that Chinese workers constructed a temple in the cave whilst working up there many years ago with 2 stone Gargoyles carve out of the stone one on either side of the entrance.
That's a crazy story but I wouldn't put it past the mountain. I didn't know it had any caves, just outcroppings. So I guess this location would be somewhere on the slopes of mount hull? Someone should organise a search party
Great video, thanks for sharing. The mountain hides a few secrets. Years ago I was standing in the Woolworths carpark in Sandy Bay looking up at the mountain in full snow cover, and an old lady approached me and told me that many years ago a bushman or forester cut his initials into the mountain in the trees, i forget now it was either T.S or S.T, and she said that when the snow line gets to the right level you can still make it out. I have looked year after year since then when it snows but I have never seen it.
Wow, old Victors place sure fell apart since I went there 30ish years ago. The hut was still standing and was indded two stories although the top floor was really just a small "zen room" built to take advantage of the view. The whole place was full of wonderful stuff, many drawings on the walls and quite a few sketchbooks and notepads. There was even a visitors logbook and a pot of apple stew (opening that was a bad idea🤣) As far as I remember, the original structure about 150m East and slightly uphill was a stone and timber building about 4x10m and was set in about an acre of fully landscaped terraced gardens. Pretty sure the odd bits of plumbing you found were part of the watering system for the gardens as the 2nd building had water tanks. Whover Victor was he must have been a tough old bugger cos all the building materials were carried up there on his back, there was mention of this in some of his writings. Glad he has not been forgotten and thanks Angus for showing this👍 Only a few weeks ago I was telling a mate about what a wonderful place it was. Sad to see it gone but happy that ppl still know of this little hidden gem.
I was blown away when I was first showed the place, was a pretty tightly held secret back then, Not sure I could find it again after so long and my legs wouldn't last anyway 🤣 I probly went there half a dozen times and there were signs of other visitors. Another interesting thing I saw up there was a 10-12ft long brown snake. I know they are not Tassie natives but I saw enuf of em on the big island to recognise one. Maybe old Victor had a pet?
there is alot of relic huts that burnt down up there that I have not found yet...this is interesting as I have found all standing hidden huts up there...awesome video never knew this info....great video again love how you bushwalk in jeans and sandshoes lol 🤣
Your losing history every day in Tasmania and complete apathy of your State Government. I tried to have the railway between Scottsdale and Branxholme listed as an item of historical significance. It is a great rail trail now, however the track between Lebrina and Wyena must be again a railway 6km. Return and develop Denison Gorge into a camping and picnic ground for trail trailers and family day outs. Lebrina construct a cafe looking out to Mt Arthur which is the terminus station for the train and meets the railtrail from Launceston. Your State Government is not interested.
forgot to say there is over 30 ruins up there letalone the secret standing huts....there is a book I can't remember the name but a old couple published it and found all the huts that use to be standing up there....it's a great book I can't remember that name but damn it's good with great info....about the huts and the hotel that was up there etc but yeah so many ruins up there but this is great good video dude

Interesting.
@billbricks3509 which cave?
I can't believe all the local stuff you bring to our attention. Thanks!!
Born in Hobart, raised in South Hobart in the 70s and this is the first I've heard of the temple! Love your video's!
Cheers, Katerina. If the channel can become sustainable, I'll be able to keep producing more content.
Wow, just fascinating! A theistic hideaway on kunanyi. What a character.

Thank you, Trevor. And thanks for remembering him.
I imagine there may be a few encampments like Victor's temple dotted about the state.
Quite possible
Love it, thank you.
Hi just wanted to let you know that I have photos of this before it burned down.
Hi William, very interesting. Would you be willing to share them?
Possibly burnt down for the Jewish Occult factor? Crowley'ism? Helena Blavatsky?
‘ Jewish occult ‘ !?…
