Dr. Isabel Millar's The Psychoanalysis of Artificial Intelligence: link.springer.com/book/10.100...
In this discussion, Dr. Isabel Millar introduces us to the reasons why she put neuroscience and psychoanalysis into closer conversation, opening up a 'provocation': "the psychoanalysis of artificial intelligence". Here we discuss the role of sexuation, enjoyment, and non-relation in thought (feminine/masculine), the conceptual vehicle of the sexbot, structures of repression/perversion/psychosis, the shift in focus from objet a to lathouse and alethosphere, the role of the subject in psychoanalysis vs. science, the sacred position of the child in human culture (the child as objet a), intersections of transgender/transhuman, distinctions between utopian and dystopian singularity, and science becoming science fiction.

Very unique take on AI. I'm all for the return to thinking about the body, which these sorts of tech are making necessary. I can see why you recommended this book!

Indeed! I think Isabel's work is incredibly unique. It is one of the most unique theses I have come across in this space, and can't wait to dive into her next work, which will be focused at the intersection of politics, suffering and enjoyment. That should be fire 🔥🔥

1:05:46 *Logic of sexuation* "To become a man or to become a woman is not just to do with reaching sexual maturity or having a gender identity or a certain type of presenting yourself physically-it's to do with our relationship to language and the signifier. And for psychoanalysis, masculinity and femininity are concepts that we embody. And we may experience both forms of those, but they are concepts that we have to sort of understand before we can understand anything else."

The lathouse is such an interesting concept. Glad she decided to expand on it!

Absolutely, it was one of the many aspects of her thesis where I felt that she was conceptually innovating with psychoanalysis in such an interesting and engaged way.

Great conversation! I learned so much, and thanks for asking for clarification around the lathouse and alethosphere..excited to learn it's related to Baudrillard

Very important. I think lathouse/alethosphere can help us bring psychoanalysis into the digital age. Baudrillard helps too!

6:46 *"Extimacy* is this psychoanalytic term that is trying to capture the idea of the inherent exteriority of the internal, the idea of the interior world. So that rather than thinking about the unconscious as this black box that is hidden away inside of us that we have to pull out, the Lacanian gesture is to sort of exteriorize that and say, 'well actually all these most intimate things are out there-they're structures that are produced by relationships and laws and conventions,' right. But of course, that's not the whole story because Lacan wasn't just a structuralist he was talking about a sort of biological body that is immersed into this network of sort of non-human, as it were, impulsions."

@@PhilosophyPortal Can only say I'm still pondering. Something one also can ponder is the function AI can have in relation to Girard. Can AI predict and personify the scapegoat giving mobs a constant supply of perfectly adapted scapegoats for them to crucify?

@@conforzo adaptations of large language models like ChatGPT are already fooling the average ostrich-brained web user (and thus passing the Turing test in that regard).. it's definitely a fun thought experiment whether a future AGI will be able to fully embody and instrumentalize mimetic desire!

@fb_conforzo @deleuzionalbaudlacanian Yes, my thoughts are with y'all. We are in _such_ fetishistic times today. I half pity those who are placing such religious hopes in these systems, half despise them for being so insufferably gullible. Same story as the UAP/UFO hearing recently, such a disingenuous charade, looking to distract and to divide those with critical faculties and those without by jumping to such crackpot conclusions such as ET life-likely to duplicitously justify increases in the already shamefully overbloated "defense" (warmachine) budget.
Like Zizek has said-we claim to be the most secular age in human history, yet we believe _more than ever_ today. That is something I agree with down into my bones. All the comorbidities of our age-the pressure of economic/ecological precarity, the disconnective/discombombulating dimension of digital/virtual life, the unrelenting fantasies of "angels" (scientism) which thru some magical hi-tech means will come down to save us from hell, the shameless hyperbolic claims of tech salesmen and marketers pumped out with psychoanalytic force in competitive advertising, the sheer weight of the death of God splitting our skulls, sending us careening into the arms of masters and gurus-seems we have really lost the thread of reason collectively.
I seriously hope AI/ML/advanced tech can be harnessed to liberate humanity from this age of mass gaslighting and exploitation, but I am filled with massive pessimism as I discover many of my friends building idols in their hearts, placing their dreams into the salvation of big tech, imagining they will escape death thru some future miracle machine.
Sorry for the screed, your comments speak to me so deeply tho my friends.

I would be _honored_ to be martyred by such a future AI overlord. It would be spectacularly demonstrating how ethically bankrupt it was. What a nightmare paradise that world would be..
