- 6-track bootleg 12" EP of the 1992 sessions for the unreleased album, "Popularity Breeds Contempt", which would have been the second Jesus Loves You album. None of these versions were released commercially, or even promotionally; they were leaked from an in-house cassette tape that was circulated late in 1992 as George's "More Protein" label crumbled and Virgin Records was deciding which branch of their label could best present and promote the album.
Along the way, George and principal songwriting partner John Themis switched gears several times and abandoned this project as it evolved from "Popularity" (a hippy-acoustic trip through spirituality) to "Welcome To The Third World" (a dance-ier take more in line with the FIRST Jesus Loves You record, "The Martyr Mantras"), and finally "Cheapness & Beauty" the autobiographical glam-rock affair that DID get issued in 1995 alongside George's first actual autobiography, "Take It Like A Man".
The 6 songs here form the basis of the partnership with John Themis, whom George worked with longer than anyone else in his entire career, and it's interesting to me to listen to these very early songs and compare them to what came later. In many cases, the finished product was missing some of the charm and raw energy of these takes; in a few areas George made the right decision by nixing them. As a fan it's hard for me to admit when ANYTHING of his isn't working right- and it's doubly difficult with this set of songs, they are undeniably beautiful from start to finish.

I absolutely love all his songs during this Hare Krishnan period of his life .. there is a very blissfull and tenderly sweet quality in his voice and it also comes through in the way he looks during this period ... and the quality of unique song writing and production is one of the very best I've ever seen in music history ...

Dear God this brings tears of joy to my eyes. Why oh why were these acoustic treasures locked in the vault all these years? I would have loved this album if it had been released at the time (circa 1992 - 1993). These original versions of these songs have such purity and heart. Would love to be able to have mp3s I could download and take in the car to enjoy during a scenic drive. This album is exquisite. Thank you so much for sharing.

Thanks you. I am happy for you. In 1984 lots of my friends went to see him in concert. I didnt had the chance. One other thing i know between 1984 and 1986 he had a housekeeper name Bonnie to clean his house and cooking meals for him. One day its was so hot outside George told her to give some bottles of water to his fans who where waithing to see him at his fence.
This is George at his finest for me. His songwriting and musicianship during the period is really wonderful; his talent shines so brightly.

I'm finding a LOT of songs from George that I haven't heard before. Probably because I live in the US, I don' remember ANY songs from his solo career, or from JESUS LOVES YOU. I think being barred from entering the country (and unable to perform or promote anything) during the late 1980's really hurt him over here. While some Brits might say "Yeah , who cares about the US anyway!", the truth is we DO represent a HUGE market for aspiring artists, and the US has a "lot of love" for British musicians. This evening I re-listen to this album again. Somehow I find a great similarity between George now and George in the early 90s. Sweet toxic love sounds like it could be one of George's new songs. And I could imagine how George would sing it now 🙂. Thank again David for this and all your great work/content and for guiding me all the way ❤

I'm surprised by his voice in the last song, its so different from the rest of the album (like how Love's Gonna Let You Down was different from the rest of songs in the Martyr Mantras album) ... its so deep, so powerful, full of intense sadness but so beautiful ... how did he manage to make his voice so hoarse in this one and Love's Gonna.. ?
I'm sure its a creative decision, not due to having soare throat ... but how is he able to make his voice be so hoarse for these masterpieces ?

Cant stop listening to this album sice yesterday 💖, it was a "crime" 😜 that this project was shelved. There was a video of The Deal on youtube with George's husky voice, I think they used the sound version of this album to create that video? Or was there a time in early 90s that George's voice was like this? I dont think I love any other album more than this one 💗💖💗
"Deal" is the only song he has sung using that style of vocal; "Love's Gonna Let U Down" on The Martyr Mantras is similar, but not quite the same.

Wow I was so surprise to heard George singing at the last song ." You Are The Real Deal" what happen at this time with hes voice.
He did it that way on purpose; he wanted the song to have a grittier, blues-ier sound to it the song. I like it better than the version he ultimately released in 2002 on his "U Can Never B 2 Straight" album.

I always thought Am I Losing Control, that Spanish-sounding dance mix version, would have been a much stronger JLY single than the A-side, Sweet Toxic Love, in terms of radio-friendliness/dancefloor. Thanks for posting these. I love this period from his career. I am curious if you have the lost Culture Club sessions from the album they were working on in 1989. I have heard unreleased tracks like Stand Down, Peculiar World, and Believe, and Next to You, and wondered what years they were recorded.
I like Sweet Toxic Love, I think Control would have been a good A-side on it's own, but not at the expense of Toxic Love. As for the '89 sessions, I believe all those songs you mentioned came from that period. I'd love to hear more from then, I like those songs, and IJust Wanna Be Loved dates from then, too!

Mr David. Can you help me figure out what song I am trying to find. It is early BG long hair and robes and the video he is in a house party slumber party and all the boys are on the bed. I don't know what it is called and it may even be another artist and he is in the video because he was out and about and fascinating. Any ideas?

It will be hard to sing like that all through this song I Though he has a sour throat "a cold" Do you know the year when he lost his voice and why he loose it at one point.
He had polyps on his vocal cords that were diagnosed in 2014, which is why the Culture Club tour and "Tribes" album were cancelled. He appeared on one of Britain's dance competition shows singing "Karma Chameleon" and it was absolutely dreadful, as was his appearance on "The View" a few days earlier performing "More Than Silence" and "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me". But he's since followed doctor's orders and the advice of one of the world's leading vocal coaches and has greatly improved his voice. Does he sound the same today as he did then? No, and probably never will. But it was THAT style of singing (a career with no proper vocal training) that caused the damage in the first place. He now has a broader range, he can sustain notes for much longer, he uses vibrato correctly and holds his notes more solidly rather than undulating around them, all ensuring a lengthy future doing what he does best.
