Cool video man. I am a big fan of the serial null modem multiplayer. Games from 1989 up to 2000 year had support for IPX or direct serial connection. There was still much to be done with that technology. Diablo I and Starcraft I, windows games, have even 4 players multiplayers using serial cables. They work great even between windows 95 vs windows 98.

Cool, never used those serial or parallel cables for Windows networking but we did for network gaming under DOS, I installed on my first machine a 10BASE2 to play with my friend using a single coaxial cable with 2T and 2 terminators (can't believe we used to carry our machines with a CRT from one place to another LOL) serial was OK for some gaming but we also use to share files when we got together later we exchanged the cards for 10BASET with a crossover cable, my friend was a little more cautious than me about opening his super expensive 486 DX2 66 Gateway but when we need to copy several megabytes I connected my HDD to his and copy away. 😅
I can't even remember how many times I tried to install software/hardware in my old 486 back then and had to reinstall EVERYTYHING! Those were the days! 🤣
I just want to point out that there was nothing new or innovative in Microsoft's Direct Cable Connection back around 1996 - we were already connecting Commodore Amiga A500's together via serial ports to play networked games of, say, Stunt Car Racer back in 1989. It was amazing fun too!
Yes! I was just focusing on this being the first M$ freebee, as all other solutions (like laplink, etc) were 3rd party. It was about time M$ caught up, took them until 1996!
The minute i saw the thumbnail for this video, my brain thought of something related to stable diffusion (anyway, that's how LAN works i believe, but Microsoft tried it in Windows 7, by doing the exact same thing, but through WiFi)

WIFI in Win7 and USB crossover in Vista. Nothing beats a good old serial cable! FYI, it was the AI in Photoshop that helped me 😎
