  • OSCAR WINNER:Best Screenplay AdaptationBest SoundNominated for 10 Academy Awards, including "Best Picture," The Exorcist was controversial and extremely popular from the moment it opened in 1973.This is the frightening and realistic tale of an innocent girl (Oscar-nominated Linda Blair) inhabited by a terrifying entity, her mother’s frantic resolve to save her (Ellen Burstyn in her own Oscar-nominated performance) and two priests - one doubt-ridden, the other a rock of faith - who come together in a battle of ultimate evil. To this day, The Exorcist leaves viewers breathless. The greatest supernatural thriller of all-time astonishes and unsettles like no other movie before or since.

As I understand it, this trailer wasn't banned. It was replaced by a trailer more reflective of the actual movie. All that black and white strobe photography is certainly unsettling, but it doesn't appear in the movie. Also, the highly dissonant music doesn't appear in the movie - in fact, this music was commissioned, but the director was dissatisfied and didn't use it, choosing instead to buy the rights to the already recorded "Tubular Bells" from Mike Oldfield.

Quentin Barrentine...The ushers weren't prepared either. I t was the biggest third shift cleaning crew I ever saw. The fans stayed on all night and still we couldn't get the stomach acid smell out the seats. It got in our uniforms. It got in our hair. NO ONE wanted washroom detail. We didn't have hooded suits then. Slowly we were issued latex gloves, smelling salts, and clip radios. This went on for well over a year once the theater owner found a loophole in the liability clause after so many people hit their heads against the armrest on the way to the floor. We couldn't touch them we were advised...just call the paramedics. After awhile, the city agreed to two ambulances parked outside full time on standby. It...was...that...bad.

She provided the demonic voice of the possessed child, and her performance is one of the key factors that makes the movie so terrifying. This movie may not be as scary, but it will always be the most notable horror movie in cinema history. It touched a subject others wouldnt dare touch and yet they did more than simply that, they went beyond that and at the time was seen as more of a reality than fiction. Even to this day, many are still facinated with how amazing this movie is and how it feels as if it can possibly happen to anyone. It also brought psychological fear, which few films successfuly could achieve. And still brings shivers down our spines and inspired the genre of supernatural horror. Although it is heavily over used, few films can manage to almost have that fear and feeling that this movie had, but none will be as good as the exorcist. This is why it still is the #1 horror film of all time.

I can understand calling it one of the most notable horror movies in cinema history, but calling it _the_ most notable is a tricky claim. Films like "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari", "Frankenstein", "Psycho", "Night of the Living Dead", "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre", "Halloween", or "The Shining" could just as easily be argued for that title.

The context is important, horror films that really pushed the limits from the Slasher flicks of Halloween, to Evil Dead, to the modern day gore films of saw and hostel as made it so that films like these seems like child play on the surface. The Exorcist relies on pacing and atmosphere to make you scared. People who say ignorant things like “I watched this movie and was laughing, not scary at all” are just contrarians. They’ve simply heard that this is the scariest film ever made, and think they’re cool for not being spooked by a barrage of jump scares. Truth is this is one of the best horror films ever made, it’s not my personal favorite but I can’t deny the influence and impact this film had to the Horror Genre. It’s a masterpiece.

This movie tells a true story that actually happened to a boy from Washington whose parents desperate for how to help him moved in w relatives in st Louis MO after the word Louis appeared as if being craved from under his skin. It was in the family's home and the former alexian brothers hospital that they performed his exorcism. The wing in the hospital where this occured was torn down as supernatural occurances continued until even after shut down and sealed off from use until it was decided that it was best to demolish it. It was during my preparation for my first communion & that same week I saw this movie, I had my first confession at our church. I was so traumatized, I hadn't slept in days. I told the priest everything. He was upset but supportive. Gave me some very good spiritual advice that really helped me. Just a few days later, that priest passed away. I'm 36 & I'm still feeling pretty messed up about that movie to this day.

I think what scared people about the trailer so much was the sense of unknown cause you could only slightly make out the scenes

I've watched all the crap imitations over the years, this is still truly the best possession film ever, the uncut directors version is the ultimate version imo as my niece watched it for the first with me on Halloween and it scared the crap out us both and I've seen it tons of times lol

I was watching the Skinamarink trailer, and when the narrator says “IN THIS HOUSE …" I immediately knew the voice was familiar and its from this awesome Exorcist trailer.😍😍😍

I believe people reacted to this movie the way they did because it was quite ahead of it's time for portraying the subject matter in a much more realistic way. I know that some of the scenes are not realistic (head turns 360 degrees, etc) but it was one of the first movies that handled it in a very visceral way. For the remainder of the decade horror movies really followed Friedken's lead by creating an experience that made you FEEL something and not just SEE it. I love 70s horror movies for that very reason. The effects used were to pressure the viewer into feeling what was happening on the screen. The 80s took the genre and went for the visual effects more so than its predecessors. Even though I love 80s horror I tired of the constant gore factor for gore's sake. I love each decade for what they offer but I will always have a soft spot for 70s horror movies. IMO, that is why movies like The Exorcist and Halloween still stand up to this very day and beyond.

scarem84604 It was the greatest PR piece for the Catholic Church ever. I prefer Rosemary’s Baby, where the devil wins-that’s far more realistic than an exorcist!

"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is another favorite of mine. The psycho family in the movie is so horrible and disturbing that it's so difficult to watch and has such a low budget look it feels like you are watching a documentary. Truly horrifying.
