    Harold's army didn't march from Stamford Bridge - he and his retainers (huscarls) rode down, around 300 or so men, and raised a new army (Fyrd) from areas closer to Hastings.
    This is part of the reason why William attacked despite having the inferior position - every day that passed gave Harold time to rally more troops, so William chose to attack uphill rather than wait to be outnumbered.

      @tancreddehauteville764 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but Harold didn't need to rush down, he should have stayed back, maybe sent skirmishers and scouts, and played for time, raising a bigger army.

      >raised a new army (Fyrd)
      Does that mean that Harold's force at Hastings was something closer to a militia than a standing army?

      @@tancreddehauteville764He did. Harold lost control of the men that attacked down the hill.

      13:00 this is the turning point where Harold loses control and his men fall into the trap. The trap is set by William involving luring Anglo saxon men down the slope and into flat ground where his calvary could overwhelm them. It was a huge advantage for William here, but I wonder as calvary in Agincourt were hurt badly by archers, if Harold had had archers here, how differently would this battle have played out?

    William's victory over the British Anglo-Saxons was one of the most significant events in military history. It changed the culture of English society by introducing French words into English. 41% of English consists of French words due to Norman's invasion.

    • @dumspirospero-s1l

      Oui c'est vrai, néanmoins la langue anglaise n'est pas un pidgin anglo-saxon-français, même avec tout le vocabulaire norman-français qu'elle possède. C'est pourquoi les Français ont tant de mal a bien la parler. J'en ai fait l'expérience qu'en je vivais à Londres il y a un demi-siècle. Je me débrouillais bien mais je n'ai jamais pu comprendre toutes les finesses de cette langue subtile et si agréable à l'oreille pour un francophone. Vive l'amitié anglo-française et vive la différence :)

    If the English hadn't had to fight at Stamford bridge, they would have probably won at Hastings.
    William and his thieves, were extremely lucky that the English were badly weakened.

    Instead of rushing down to Hastings, Harold would have done better to go to London, raise a large army there and then meet William with a massive numerical advantage.

  • @Comicsluvr

    I have a question for those of you better versed in this than I am (which is to say most of you): Given that Harold had no cavalry or archers, why didn't William place his men at the foot of the hill, or even march them to within 100 feet or so, and then ride the cavalry around the flanks? Yes, I have read about forests and rough terrain, but William had literally all day to maneuver. With his men within sprinting distance and archers behind them, they couldn't turn around to face cavalry forming on their flanks or rear because that would ruin the shield wall that defended against the archers. Willaim could have told his cavalry to ride at pace around to Harold's flanks or rear, find a position even halfway decent to attack from, and then wait. The infantry charge, the cavalry threaten the flanks or rear, and the archers shoot the stragglers or tight groups of enemies.
    Why wouldn't this work? I understand that two armies trying to maneuver on flat terrain can't get away with this because they can just redeploy to counter, but it doesn't seem to me that Harold would be able to do this.
    Regardless, this was a terrific video.

    • @cliffordjensen8725
      @cliffordjensen8725 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would assume that Harold rested his flanks on terrain that was basically impassable to infantry or cavalry in battle formation. William would have certainly flanked Harold if at all possible. Sadly, there is no way for us to judge the actual terrain from a thousand years in the future because so many things could change over time. Considering that both commanders were battle tested, I think that this is a good assumption.

      Well they tried it up North and got the beatdown of the century. At the end of the day England couldn't produce a field army inclusive of cavalry etc. that could contend with William. I don't think there was another major standing battle after Hastings.
