  • The latest version of the Porsche 718 Cayman may have fewer cylinders, but its new range of turbocharged engines offers more power. How does that translate into forward acceleration? That's what Edmunds Senior Writer Carlos Lago finds out in this acceleration test. Featured in this video is the base model 718 Cayman, which receives motivation from a turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-four with 300 horsepower. Though a manual transmission is standard, this test car has the fast-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
    Q: What kind of engine and transmission does the 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman have?
    A: The Porsche 718 Cayman has a turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-four that makes 300 hp and 280 pound-feet of torque, while the more expensive S variant upgrades to a 2.5-liter flat-four with 350 hp and 309 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual is standard, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is optional.
    Q: How do you activate the 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman's launch control?
    A: Launch control is only available with the optional dual-clutch automatic transmission and the Sport Chrono package. After entering Sport Plus mode, press the brake hard with your left foot and apply full throttle with your right foot. Once the engine revs up to roughly 6,000 rpm, release the brake pedal.
    Q: How fast is the 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman?
    A: During testing, the 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman reached 60 mph in 4.3 seconds (4.1 seconds with a 1-foot rollout, as on a drag strip) and clocked a quarter-mile time of 12.6 seconds at 108.5 mph.
    Q: What are the 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman's main competitors?
    A: Mid-engine sports cars are uncommon at this price. As far as sporty coupes go, the 718 Cayman's closest competition includes the Audi TT, the BMW M2 and the Chevrolet Corvette.

    People always smack talk the base models of caymans but for most people, that's plenty. I will say I am surprised that the 4 did so well.

    • @Baerchenization
      @Baerchenization 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      People's talk was justified because previous base models lacked the oomph. This one seems to do well however, at least on paper, it is faster than the old GTS.

    I have a 2021 718T Cayman (so the 4 cyl 2 liters 300 hP stock) that I m enjoying since more than 1 year now. I did a stage 2 preparation on it: Kline Innovation downpipe, 100 cells sport cat and remap. The car does 392 HP am o to 100 kph in 3.6 s/3.7 s consistent. 100 kph to 200 kph in 10.0 s. You gotta factor in things like the DCT, mid engine layout being able to put the power to the ground better, and efficiency of the engine. Plus the car being light. All of these things working in harmony to give you that acceleration. Porsche is really on a whole other level when it comes to putting together their cars.

    • @BigHeadClan
      @BigHeadClan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's decently quick to be sure, but for that much money an M2 is honestly a better buy, and I personally dislike the move to a 4-cylinders with the 718 generation.
      By every metric it's a better car than before but I just can't get over the fact that 50-60K can only get you a turbo-4.

    • @alliejr
      @alliejr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      +BigHeadClan I’m sure M2 is also a great car, but this Cayman is more than drag racer. The mid engine platform will way out perform the M2. However, the Cayman is not a 4 seat sedan. Different animals. That said, spend your money as you like.

    • @BigHeadClan
      @BigHeadClan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      alliejr - You clearly have no idea what your talking about, the m2 has a 50/50 weight distribution, is a coupe just like the cayman and both weighs and has as much power as the base cayman...

    • @CuzRepo
      @CuzRepo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Never mind the base Cayman or M2. If the most bang for your buck is what we want, a Camaro 1LE is a better buy than any of them. It's an extremely tight and balanced chassis, a genuine driver's car and a track monster for under $40,000 (With discounts), it has 450+ horsepower, it's nearly as fast as a Cayman GT4 around Laguna Seca, it won't cost you a fortune to own, and it isn't a unicorn that you have to go hunt down like the GT4 or M2.

  • @limulus61

    Damn, my 981 S with the 3.4L flat six is equal to a base 718 from 0-60 (4.3-4.4 sec). I drove a 718 S at PEC Atlanta and I knew it was quite quick, but now the base 718 is the same as my 981. I still get the flat six wail with my 981. With a $1200 tune, you can get up to 360HP out of a 981 S but I'm sure the 718 S is still quicker.

  • @TheHuskyGT

    I was so surprised about the new 4-banger. I don't care about 4-cylinder engines, but for once this actually makes sense. A Flat 4 in a small Porsche is kinda cool! Porsche hasn't done it in ages. And they leave the 6-cylinder for the 911 :)

  • @tonglai7499
    @tonglai7499 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    wow.. Porsche under reports its 0-60 times by like a whole sec (official number 5.1), I guess official number does not use sport chrono. What about the S or GTS model, Please do more of these videos as we need a good 0-60 standard to look to.
