    Durham University's department of mathematical sciences has published a guide on ‘decolonisation’, urging academics to ensure their teaching is "more inclusive" and not dominated by a Eurocentric view on the world.
    The guide advisers lecturers to: "Consider giving short biographies of the mathematicians whose work you present in your modules. If in doing so you realise that they are almost entirely (or even completely) white and/or male, ask yourself why this is.
    "See if you can find contributions to the field from mathematicians of other genders/ethnicities."
    Kevin O'Sullivan picks over the findings with Durham student and political commentator Sophie Corcoran.

    I just head about this story. It's beyond appalling. Mathematics is one of the most beautiful fields of human endeavour. It's one of the few truly meritocratic fields where anyone can make an impact, if their ideas are good enough. To suggest that it needs "decolonizing" is racist rubbish. Gauss, Euler, Newton, Leibniz.... we should be praising these people for the incredible contributions they have made to our society, not trying to hide their achievements because they're not black enough. I'm truly sick of this woke insanity. Well done Sophie for speaking up.

    I work at a University. A contributing factor to this is the ineptitude and simple-mindedness of most professional services staff. Most of them have zero experience of work or life outside of the HE sector, and have had no exposure to the complex machinations of culture at all - they can generally be described as students 'who forgot to leave' at the end of their course, took a job a University administration department and progressed to a position at odds their experience or intellect. Having individuals with poor knowledge of culture, society or humans in general, outside of the UK's dire curriculum, is a recipe for disaster and leaves them completely vulnerable to viscious far left idealogues who force their political values on University leadership teams who don't know any better, and have no resilience of character to say no to anything or anyone.

    they are just replaying the cultural revolution where kids where divided according to their parents

    Those who had the misfortune of having "priviledged" family where tainted.
    Diversity in this context means minorities are the new (honorable) red class, and whites are

    "`See if you can find mathematicians from other ethnicities or gender" ... erm, OK, off the top of my head there is Srinivasa Ramanujan (he had a MOVIE made about him, you know!), Ada Lovelace (she is widely celebrated to this day), not to mention all the famous Arabic medieval mathematicians. If you want to know why there are many White mathematicians, ask yourself why we had the Enlightenment in Europe, whereas people like the Arabs who had once been so prevalent in the scientific fields turned their backs on everything in order to regress into hardcore theology. Maybe teach about that, rather than there being some sort of racial aspect to it. Honestly, are these people running our universities even educated? Can I just point out that Ramanujan had had no education and was Indian by birth, but his exceptional abilities were eventually recognised and we horrible, rac1st, white people got him a place at Cambridge University. .. During the First World War, by the way, when the rest of British White people were dying in trenches.

    • @shelleyphilcox4743
      @shelleyphilcox4743 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Matthew Walker...part of the issue is, however, that the majority of people have no idea who Ramanujan or Lovelace were. They will however be able to name Pythagoras, Newton, Einstein, Pascale or Fibonacci...but not, Hypatia, Brahmangupta, Sophie Germain, Emmy Noether, al-Khwarizmi, Omar Khayyam.
      So it's not the worst thing in the world to have a look at our curriculums and genuinely look at them with fresh eyes and see if there is material that we dont teach which we should or could be because it deserves to be in the curriculum because of the importance of the work. This is not about engineering the curriculum to teach subject matter that is irrelevant or of lesser quality, just to tick boxes, it should be about whether our curriculums are as good as they could be.

    • @matthewwalker5430
      @matthewwalker5430 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shelleyphilcox4743 It is precisely about "box-ticking" though and if you cannot see that you are either being blind to it or disingenuous. Besides I'm not even sure what your point is exactly. I agree the 'majority of people' won't know Ramanujan, Lovelace etc but the majority of people are not studying mathematics at Durham either. I am not studying mathematics though and even I know who they are, I said those 2 off the top of my head and, as I said, Ramanujan had a big, Hollywood movie made about him! So they're hardly under-appreciated. And this is not about looking at the curriculum "with fresh eyes" as you put it because if it were the ethnicity would be irrelevant. These are not students studying for GCSE learning about Pythagoras, these are university students studying high level mathematics and, I'm sorry, there is NO WAY that is at the exclusion of the works of people like those you mention (I notice you didn't mention a single Chinese mathematician by the way - if we go down this route we'll always miss someone out!). If it was just about teaching better mathematics nobody would have a problem, but it is being instigated under false pretences - the notion that maths has ANYTHING to do with race or gender. You talk about "most people" not knowing Lovelace but most people do not give a monkey's who Fibonacci was either, and all that matters in mathematics is his sequence, not his gender nor skin colour. Besides, we are in Britain so why would any Brits identify with Fibonacci or Pythagoras? Because they're White? That is insane. You list a bunch of White, Male mathematicians whom you surmise "the majority would know" (even though that is not the argument here) but how many "British" mathematicians do "the majority of people" know? Lovelace, maybe, and Alan Turing obviously (who was homosexual and was genuinely persecuted for being so, but is still widely celebrated in mathematics). Instead of people crying about a lack of representation from whatever tribe they identify as, whatever happened to wanting to succeed on your own merit? When Ramanujan arrived at Cambridge in 1916 he never said "but where are all the Indian mathematicians?" - he fought so that HE would be recognised for his mathematics amongst his peers. I am Welsh, do I get to moan that there are not enough Welsh mathematicians being represented? I can't name a single one and yet I managed to name an Indian and a Female off the top of my head ... but then don't mistake me for someone who actually cares about representation in the 1st place.

      @@matthewwalker5430 I'm completely ignorant and poorly educated about Chinese mathematicians. I'd be very happy to learn.
      This is a much bigger issue than just Durham Uni.
      I struggle to see what is so bad about having a look at what is in the curriculum and whether it is biased for the wrong reasons or if the curriculum is spot on for teaching the most useful maths and the story of mathematical development. If it is already, that's great...if not, change it.
      I'm sympathetic to the irritation at woke posturing, but I'm also open to the idea that our curriculums in general (not just maths) might benefit enormously from looking across the world and history for interesting and varied subject matter.
      Would you find it objectionable if I said I think a very interesting subject for history is the study of the Barbary slave trade, the Mali Empire, Mansa Musa and Zanzibar/ Tippu Tip? Why didnt I know about Shen Kuo? (Gotta love Google and thanks to Ada Lovelace and Hedy Lamarr who both made innovations that underpin our modern communications).
      Looking elsewhere in the world to teach incredible history of discovery and innovation is surely interesting and not a bad thing?

    We're getting to the stage in our society, where it's no longer going to be enough to just flush out these people from all positions of power, and reverse the damage they've done, but people will want to see those responsible punished.

      @Cede Nullis In which case, you might find if you are looking to teach fundamental maths that originated in England you would have to strike maths from the curriculum altogether considering that the most fundamental concepts built on by British, and specifically English mathematicians is originates from India to Persia and Greece. Can you cite me an English mathematician contemporary with Eratosthenes of Cyrene circa 276 BC? He calculated the circumference of the earth and the earth's axial tilt when England didnt even have a system of writing. The earliest record we have is rune stones using Scandinavian text from 200AD...so it seems to me you might be a really good example of why it might be necessary to include more information about the origination of vital discoveries on which English scholars built centuries later.

    I studied maths precisely because there was no agenda to crowbar wokeness into it. It's come to something when numbers and their application and function in the world can be viewed as symptomatic of a colonial history. Then again, history is also on the hitlist. Madness.
