Do Signature Guitars Still Matter?

  • First off, let’s be thankful for this episode of Dipped In Tone. Rhett survived a close brush with a tornado while on the road in Arkansas, and returns to the pod to analyze all things signature guitars with Zach, who continues his dogged campaign to own a ridiculous number of Tube Screamers. (They didn’t plan their near-matching shirts.)
The conversation-starter is the new Jason Isbell “Red Eye,” a $21,999 collector’s version of the 1959 Gibson Les Paul that famously belonged to Ed King of Lynyrd Skynyrd. When King passed away in 2018, the story goes that Isbell wanted the guitar, but couldn’t afford it. Zach and Rhett explain how he accrued the capital to snag the axe, and the details behind the new artist edition.
But who gets signature guitars, anyway? Some iconic players, like John Frusciante-so easily identified with his Strats-still don’t have their own model. Is he being snubbed, or choosing to keep his name off a mass-produced guitar? Maybe some guitarists feel signatures are too corporate-which could also explain why Jack White has, so far, not lent his name to a model. (Though pedals are a different story.) And what about massively popular TH-cam guitar stars and influencers-have they earned the right to be in the running for a signature 6-string?
Later, Zach and Rhett dig into the economics of siggys-how much do their namesakes actually earn from the sale of their personal brand?-and debate Slash’s bombshell move from Marshall to Magnatone.

I have the standard that I also purchased through the waitlist as well (it was 18 months then) and when I got that I freaked out and wanted a backup because I was playing out at the time. I got on the waitlist and waited 2.5 years for the gold one. I use the gold one because it actually sounds better to me than the other side by side. But I haven’t scalped the original. I think slash still deserves a sig. He releases an album every 2-3 years non stop grinding and they clearly sell or they'd stop doing it. Id like to see Fender do another run of Rory Gallagher Strats. Also, Rory used a cool Gretsch Corvette that would be great to have.
I dont really care for sigs that are just a simple mod, like swapping a bridge or something. Anyone can just get the original model and do that themselves. I like seeing the ones where the artist did a custom finish or combined parts from different models.

The white Suhr Roughneck-Ian Thornley’s signature guitar-is my dream guitar. And sure, part of the draw is that I know it was built to specs that he had a hand in deciding. Do I think it’s the same as wearing the jersey of your favorite sports figure? I don’t, but maybe I’m just defensive. And demeaning the TubeScreamer is just silly-it’s clearly one of the most influential circuits in the pedal world, and too many great guitarists have chosen it as part of their sound for it to be dismissed out of hand.

Adrian Belew’s signature Parker Fly was the last signature electric model that held any interest for me. I have very little investment into the idea of vintage gear fetishism, and have never been fashionable in the guitar world. Some unpopular takes for you to be mad at.
    - Strat & tele > Les Paul & SG
    - Les Paul is a fundamentally flawed guitar design
    - Ibanez soul
    - Solid state amps can be great, actually, even old ones.
    - “American made” has become of questionable value and is nearly always overpriced
    - Potentiometers are more important than pickups
    - nobody cares what I think 😊
    - I love this podcast, and both of these dudes are golden.
    - Sire is killing it, hard
    - Harley Benton is an amazing economy brand
    - The Raconteurs are are probably still underrated
    - circuits are circuits
    - The ES-335 is the best Gibson model (and the only one I would own) in spite of having similar flaws to the Paul

I think it comes down to, is it a one-guitar artist. For example Wilco has one single-guitarist and one multi-guitarist. Nels never plays anything but his strat, so he has a signature strat; Jeff switches guitars between every song, so he doesn't have a signature guitar. It's almost as if the player has to have a "signature guitar" before the company that guitar belongs to, CAN make him a signature guitar. And that, in my opinion, is why Hetfield doesn't have one.

As far as I know, Slash is still with Marshall, he's just done this one amp with Magnatone the same way Kirk Hammet is with ESP and Gibson. Slash basically saved Gibson, much the same way Jimmy Page did in the late 60's/early 70s, and he's still a huge name in guitar and music circles, so Gibson is going to keep riding that top-hatted horse all the way to the bank as long as possible. I'd lay money down that he gets a bigger cut of the royalties than the standard 6%. So the smart money is for Marshall to not get their panties in a wad about Slash doing a one-time signature model with Magnatone, which is basically a boutique amp, and keep him as the guy people think of when they think of Marshall.
I hate when makers release something the artist doei, or didn't, use, like Gibson's Hendrix models, which were featured in a few photos when Gibson was trying to court him and not played regularly or in sessions. Even the Slash 335 kinda irks me me because it's"Slash inspired" rather than something he plays on the regular. At least Page's Fender "Dragon" was famous for being one of his main guitars in the studio.

I think it should be a thing for kids and the cheaper models of kids favorite artists. Such as a Squire or Mexi Strat. Something meant to be affordable to bring in the kids to the hobby. (e.g. Mr.T cereal) As an adult with adult money, when I see a slash model with another grown mans name on the guitar, I can't help but comparing it to childish CosPlay and a complete waste of money. I'd much rather have a guitar inspired by my favorite artist without making it a specific model. Still offer a Greenie or a Knopfler inspired Red strat but don't make it something that artificially increases the price. A home modder can build a Clapton strat close for half the price as some of the ones they've released. It's a cash grab. Of course Let the specific guitar mod changes dictate the price. I'm not saying they shouldn't charge more for a set of pickups when they are by themselves more expensive as a standard offered pickup.

Man- sucks that your one experience in Jersey was Russo at the shore. Russo has become a boring corporate attempt at a high end guitar center at this point. If you ever come back to NJ check out lark street music in Teaneck- the last great guitar shop in NJ IMO

I don't care that much for the endorsement side of things but i know that some of the guitars i like the looks are signature guitars. Someday i'll have a Troy Van Leuween Jazzmaster (oxblood, neck with blocks and binding... brrrr) and the Jason Isbell tele (telecaster with double binding).
Mike Einziger from Incubus should have a signature guitar!
About music critics,... man, i studied that and the approach your going for (if you haven't released music, you can't talk music) i don't think it's right. It's not about just music, it's the whole aesthetic experience, the purpose, the way it's narrated, the discourse, the skills, the fills and lack of things,... it's everything.
Spotify is great but now is a machine that decides what to present me based on algorithms. I prefer a human with a critical voice.
Critics, coming from criterion (judgement), not criticism. That's the key.
I trust Rhett and Zach judgement on sound and feel to make my decisions on what fuzz i may like... i think it's the same thing.
Pardon my english, this isn't my mother language 🙂

"Unless you've made something and put your name on it and put it out there for critique and consumption I don't think you've got a whole lot of ground to stand on to professionally critique others work."
I get your position but this is a load of crap. It's valid that you may not value a critique from someone who is not also an artist or creator. There are also critics we may simply dismiss/ignore if that reviewers values/criteria aren't in line with our own. But this statement is right up there with a claim that only those who have excelled at a thing are suited to coach it.

    • @JeremyAndersonBoise
      @JeremyAndersonBoise 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

I disagree. People are, in the main, too ready to offer criticisms without understanding the basic concepts of that to which they aspire to critique, and often have no understanding of the work involved in producing even the most basic example of sinilar work. Until or unless they have, I take no heed of unskilled critics, and I never will. They may, nonetheless, have related skills or experience that validates their claims, and for that reason each case should be considered individually. Anyways, geetar!
